I often wonder what Gilbert and Sullivan would say if they knew their silly little operettas have become some of the most famous, and most enduring stage musicals of all time. Pirates of Penzance is 145 years old this year, and I'm still watching it.
Rex Smith is World Class here. This is the first time I noticed Kevin Klein. And Linda Ronstadt's voice is a jewel in this film. Back in 1983, I saw this at a theatre and I didn't know who she was so I watched the credits roll to find out. Boy was I surprised!
Rex's voice here is on par with the BEST! Incredible, soooooo beautiful! I felt so conflicted the first time hearing that incredible voice paired with the hilarious pirate lyrics. Simply WONDERFUL!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Rex Smith is the very best Frederic of the very many I have seen. He combines a good voice, acting ability, the right age and, above all he is ‘a thing of beauty’.
She actually had to take voice lessons for this role, it was so far removed from how she normally sang. And she did a fantastic job. It's a real shame she can't sing any more.
She didn't HAVE to take voice lessons. She CHOSE to take voice lessons to explore other types of music other than the country-rock genre she helped create and popularize. If you ever doubt it, listen to Heart Like a Wheel. If you want to hear some of her other music where her voice reaches the stratosphere, listen to her Christmas album.
I love this scene! 😊😍❤️🎶 I played the role of Mabel in an opera scenes show at Pasadena City College! We performed this scene, as well as other different scenes from different Gilbert and Sullivan operas. We also performed different scenes from musicals like West Side Story! It was very fun! 😊❤️🎶
I just gotta say...thank you SO much for putting this up. My school's chamber choir is doing an abridged version of Pirates of Penzance, and this is the audition piece for Frederic...I've been watching this an singing along to use as practice. :) I can absolutely say if I do get the part, I have you to thank for it, Cray. :)
I've been watching your Pirates videos over and over the last few days, but I never saw this one listed until today. (Somebody else has it uploaded, but yours is better quality.) I wonder how I missed it until now. And I wonder if there are any others I've overlooked.
I fucking love that this whole song can basically be summed up like this: Pirate: I need a butter face, who's got a butter face! Maidens: No butter faces here, sir! Then Mable comes in: Mable: I have a butter face, I got you, bro!
