Sirius Black was never after Harry. He was always after Peter Pettigrew for framing him. Everyone thought he was after Harry because they always assumed that he was the one that told Voldemort about where the Potters were hiding out. But it was Peter all along. Sirius only grabbed Ron because Ron had such a tight grip on Scabbers/Peter Pettigrew. Sirius was innocent of everything including wanting to "delete" Harry. 🐶🪄🐀

I agree with you about the great recasting but I don’t think it was very evident at first. I feel it perfectly represents Dumbledore’s appearance in Harry’s eyes as he ages. When he was 11, Dumbledore was a wise gentle frail grandfather type but by the time he was in his mid to late teens Dumbledore was dueling Voldemort and apperating to caves and doing a lot of physical activities I couldn’t imagine the first Dumbledore doing.

One of the things that was left out of the movie but was in The Prisoner of Azkaban novel is that James Potter (Harry's father), Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew were the original inventors of The Marauders Map. That is the reason why Professor Lupin knew how to use it. When the original Marauders were students in Hogwarts they were all best friends. When James, Sirius and Peter found out that Remus is a werewolf they decided to become Animagus (wizards that can willfully magically turn into an animal just like Professor McGonagall can turn into a cat) because werewolves don't attack other animals and Remus' friends didn't want him to be alone during the full moon period. This is why the map reveals the weird names when you use the "I solemnly swear I am up to no good" spell. They were the nicknames of the Marauders. Mooney is Remus Lupin because he is a werewolf. Padfoot is Sirius Black because his animagus form is a dog. Wormtail is Peter Pettigrew because his animagus form is a rat. And James Potter is Prongs because his animagus form is a stag. Dumbledore knew about Remus' condition and how Remus became a werewolf when he was only a very small child. So he had the Womping Willow tree planted and had a tunnel put in so that Remus can hide in the Shrieking Shack during the full moon cycle. 🌜🌕🌛🐺🐶🦌🐀🪄🌳🏚

The scene you're confused over, they never mention killing Harry by name. The dialogue is purposely vague to make you think they're talking about Harry but they only say "him" and "he", really meaning Peter, gesturing towards where Harry is standing, when they mean the rat that Ron is holding while standing next to Harry. 😲 It's a genius scene IMHO!!

Dumbledore doesn't want the Dementors at the school but the Minister is forcing the issue to make it seem like he's doing something about Sirius' escape. It's mostly a political move, as Sirius already proved he can evade the Dementors by escaping Azkaban.
@robinrahne1

For that scene that confused you so much: We were already set up to believe that Sirius was against Harry, so that's what we think at the start of that scene. However, all of that "I'm going to kill him!" talk was really about Peter Pettigrew (whom we didn't know was even in the scene at that moment), not about Harry. Sirius never wanted to kill Harry.

Harry thought he saw his dad across the lake due to two factors. The patronus spell at full power takes the form of a spirit animal specific to the caster. Harry's full patronus is a Stag, which he did not know until he produced it during the time jump. Harry's father was an animagus, and the form he took was a Stag (Harry learned that in this year, shown in the book).

It is also to show how much Harry has grown, since he confuses himself with an adult man. It has been made so much clearer in the books that he sees someone resembling his father. James Potter was only 21 years old when he died, unlike in the movies where they cast actors almost twice that age. So the difference is a mere 8 years.

The best Harry Potter movie. The director, Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity), was specifically asked to direct this movie because of his previous experience with directing teenagers and he did an amazing job. Also, John Williams reinterpretation of his own score should have gotten him another Oscar. It also helped that this was based on one of the best Harry Potter books. ...except for the fact he left out some HUGE informations. 💀 The movie never explains the fact that James, Sirius, Remus and Peter created the Marauder's Map and that 3 of them were Animagi; the fact that James could transform into a stag (which is KEY to understand why Harry is convinced he saw his dad in the dementor scene by the lake); the fact that the Womping Willow was placed there for Lupin so he could go to the Shrieking Shack to transform during full moons when he was a student; the fact that Snape knew where to find Lupin and Sirius (aka in the Shrieking Shack) because he saw their location on the Marauder's Map when he came into Lupin's office to give him the Wolfsbane potion. So many plot holes. Also, off topic: it always makes me crack up the fact that Fred&George had the Marauder's Map since their 1st year and NEVER questioned the fact that Ron slept with a dude called Peter Pettigrew every night. 😂💀

One thing you must keep in mind is that as these books were being written is that the target audience was getting older so the themes behind each book got a little darker. I failed to realize this when i confronted my niece about reading book 3 and 4. She looked at my with very wise eyes and informed me that she was already in high school when the later books came out. lol

On the changing of the mood and tones of the movies/books. Keep in mind that the books where released in 1997, 98, 99, 2000, 03, 05, and 07. I went from a 10 year old to a 20 year old. The books themselves span 7 years story wise starting with Harry starting school at Hogwarts. The series only gets darker from here on as the kids age and the big baddie becomes more prominent in the story. As a fan of filming you will notice as you watch the rest of the films the color pallet changes from the first to being bright and innocent to the later ones much less so. I wouldn't call them kids except the first two, over all I would say its a series for teens and young adults, but really anybody who didn't read it in its time can get into it. Also keep in mind The Hobbit was written as a kid's story and it has plenty of battles and death in parts of it.

The movies get progressively darker. Sirius Black was in Azkaban and retained his sanity because dementors destroy all happy thoughts. He had no happy thoughts with the death of Harry's parents. He regained some hope because of picture of the Weasleys in the paper. He saw Scabbers with his missing toe and realized it was Peter. He managed to escape because he changed into a dog which was beneath the notice of the dementors. He didn't come for Harry he came for Peter. Also the Potters were hidden but by the nature of the magic one person had to know where they were. Originally it was going to be Sirius but they reasoned that he would be captured and tortured so instead their other friend Peter became the holder of the secret. He went to and told Voldemort.

The reason that the remedy for the effects of a Dementor's attack is chocolate is because the author, JK Rowling said that her inspiration for the Dementors was depression. JK Rowling use to suffer from deep depression when she was a young adult and that is where the inspiration came from. Chocolate has a chemical compound that causes brain cells to release dopamine that gives a person a feel-good sensation. That is why Professor Lupin keeps giving Harry chocolates as treatment for the effects of a Dementor attack. 🍫👍 But my question is what happens if you're allergic to chocolates like me? Or you can't stand the taste of chocolate, also like me? Yes, I know I am a weirdo. LOL! 😉 🍫🤢🤮👎🤔🤷‍♀️😂 Update; I just found out that there are plenty of foods other than chocolates that helps release dopamine in the brain. LOL! 😊👍

Love your show, The Potter stories are not so much childrens stories as opposed to stories seen through the eyes of the child who Harry was in book one, and then as he grows and understands more as he matures through the books. When it comes to Professor Lupin at no point was he ever helping Sirius Black, he thought the entire time that Sirius Black was guilty, it was only after Harry said that he saw Peter Pettigrew on the Marauder's Map did he know that serious was innocent and at that point was willing to help him.

This is easily my favorite movie in the series from a cinematic view, so many interesting shots and a much darker and moodier aesthetic that really sets the tone that these are not children's movies going forward. Unfortunately it also cuts out one of the most interesting plot lines from the book, being the story of the Marauders. Not only does it leave out a lot of interesting points it makes the movie confusing on first watch since you don't really get the proper context for details like Harry's multiple bad omens of dogs or what made him sure he saw his dad do the patronas the first time around.

They’re like wraiths in lord of the rings, neither alive nor dead so you can’t kill it. The dementors had to be used cause they couldn’t unmake them So they were the guards of Azkaban because they’d just feed on the prisoners and thus they’d stay there and not be such an issue Madam Pomfrey, the schools like doctor, says in the books she won’t retire because she’s too worried about the kids at the school cause safety is that bad

it sounded like he meant something specifically depicted in the movie made it seem like Black truly meant to harm Harry. After all was unveiled, it became apparent this was never Sirius' intent, but under the initial, intentional veil of confusion, it was easy to interpret Sirius' motives as sinister, especially given the masterful frame job Pettigrew had perpetrated against him. It appeared that Sirius was a monster. A fairly well constructing screenplay allowed this illusion to persist, but watch through the first half again with full knowledge and I think it holds up as nothing more than a tension building house of cards. Pettigrew was always the only monster out of the Marauder's map 4. (except unmedicated Lupin under a full moon.)

This was the first of the movies where you did miss so much not reading the book. And it being so widely hailed as the best HP yet at the time just meant they felt freer to cut things out later that didn't need cut, IMHO--or they had to cut/change things that this movie failed to setup properly. My sister and I both despised how this book adaptation was handled (doubly so for me, since its my favorite of the books), but we were among the minority who felt that way, I know.

Sirius Black was trying to delete Peter Pettigrew not Harry. Sirius, Peter, Remus, and James (Harry's Dad) were best friends at Hogwarts. Sirius and James were particularly close, so when the Potters secret location was discovered by Voldemort it was assumed that Sirius betrayed them as he alone knew their location. In fact, it was Pettigrew that alone knew their location and gave them up to Voldemort. Sirius blamed himself and went basically temporarily insane and huntes after Pettigrew. Pettigrew staged a big scene, blowing up several bystanders and himself (though in reality he turned into a rat) to frame Sirius. Sirius then ended up in Azkaban for 12 years until he saw a newspaper clipping with Scabbers in the picture. He knew exactly what Pettigrew's rat looked like. Fearing his godson was in danger and wanting revenge for his best friend, he figured out how to break out of Azkaban. I hope this clears up some confusion for you Mrlboyd. I loved your reaction!

The rampant child endangerment can be largely explained by the antiquated culture of the Wizarding World and the advanced capabilities of their medicine, as well as Wizard's natural resilience against physical harm and disease.

That's why Lupin knew that it was not possible for Peter Pettigrew to be on the map because he was supposed to be dead.

Sirius never tried to/wanted to "delete" Harry. He wanted to murder Peter for causing the death of his closest friend and then framing Sirius for his crime. The scene is intentionally misleading, of course. But when Sirius says only one person has to die tonight, he's talking about Peter (Ron's rat). It is a very frustrating movie. In some ways, it is head and shoulders above the previous two, but the Director neglected to spell out information that was essential for really understanding the plot. What makes it more unforgivable is that a lot of the info could have been explained with just another line of dialogue. The Patronus spell, for instance, has a corporeal and an incorporeal form. The corporeal form is much more powerful and takes on the shape of an animal that has significance to the caster. Also there is a form of magic that allows a person to voluntarily take the form of an animal. This is mentioned, but only in passing. The book gives a lot more information about the childhood of Harry's father and his 3 friends: Sirius, Remus, and Peter. We learn that the 4 of them were the creators of the Marauder's map. We learn that Remus is a werewolf and that his friends learned to take on animal forms in order to keep Remus company and to keep him from hurting himself when he turned. Remus became a werewolf, Sirius a black dog, Peter a rat, and James Potter a stag. So when Harry sees someone with dark hair and glasses casting a stag patronus it isn't quite so random that he thinks he is seeing his father. We also get a lot more about Snape's relationship to James Potter and his friends. Which begins to explain some of Snape's antagonism and is something to build on later. The movie barely touched on it.

It’s a nice moment but tbh it would’ve been better if they just had Lupin talking about James, because it comes across as strange to a lot of people here, especially compared to the book where lupin never really ever mentions Lily at all. It was always james, which would make things make a lot more sense to people I guess, since james was his best friend and was the one who had the idea of becoming animagi to keep lupin company

She then wrote the subsiquent books for older and older kids, so that the Audience would age up along with the characters. So this book was aimed at kids around 14 year old, and the movies are faithful to the books in that way and they age up as they go on.

The story I’ll share about the origins of Dementors is just a shorter version that dates back BEFORE Hogwarts. ❤❤❤❤Îlyius was a young orphan wizard who, according to an ancient story, single-handedly saved his village from a Dark wizard & his army of Dementors with his mouse Patronus. His mouse Patronus was capable of producing an incredibly strong corporeal form; a Patronus in the full form of a mouse. His Patronus, despite its small size, was powerful enough to banish an entire army of Dementors, shining so brightly, he amazed with fellow wizarding neighbours with his exceptional skill According to legend, Illyius was a shy, penniless orphan who lived a very long time ago in a wizarding village in the mountains. The hamlet was surrounded by a thick forest, where a Dark wizard, Raczidian, resided in a black castle guarded by Dementors. For many years, a sort of truce existed between Raczidian and the people of the village, with Raczidian leaving the villagers alone, and the villagers staying out of the part of the forest where his fortress was located. However, realising the danger that Raczidian's Dementors posed, the villagers duly taught the Patronus Charm to every generation. While not everyone was able to master the spell, there were always just enough Patronuses to ensure that, in the event Raczidian ordered an attack, the village would be protected. Thus, when Illyius reached the age of 17, the village elders showed him and the village's other young witches and wizards how to cast the Patronus Charm. Illyius was able to produce a full corporeal Patronus, but to his humiliation, it took the form of a mouse. Having never seen such a puny, feeble-looking Patronus before, everyone laughed at Illyius, and the village elders instructed him never to use the spell again. A short time thereafter, Raczidian took notice of Eliana, a beautiful young girl who lived in the village (who Illyius had never spoken to due to his shyness), while she was out picking berries in the forest. Deciding that she would make an ideal wife, Raczidian sent a demand to her parents, but they refused to consent to the marriage. Raczidian then threatened to send his Dementors to destroy the village unless they delivered Eliana to him. The village elders had a meeting and agreed to put up a fight. Eliana was sent to Illyius's tiny shack, and Illyius was ordered to sit out the battle and keep her company, as his Patronus was thought to be too weak to be of any use. At first, the villagers managed to hold back the torrent of Dementors that attacked the village with their Patronuses (which included bears, wolves, and wild boars), but gradually the sheer number of foes began to overwhelm them. The Patronuses grew faint, and the spellcasters collapsed, or fled for their lives. Eliana begged Illyius to do something. So he cast the Patronus Charm, and despite its diminutive size, the mouse shone with a brilliant light, bringing the Dementors to a halt as it nimbly moved through the ranks of fleeing villagers. Enraged, Raczidian decided to enter the fray himself, and tried to summon a Patronus to ward off Illyius's mouse. However, he failed to remember that only the pure of heart can produce a Patronus, and thus for the first time in history, it was revealed what happens when a competent but unworthy wizard or witch attempts the spell. Maggots shot out of Raczidian's wand and quickly devoured him as they engulfed his entire body. The villagers hailed Illyius as a hero. He married Eliana and had a long happy life and from that day the most esteemed Patronus in the village was the swift nimble mouse. Illyius was noted for his extreme shyness. He often found himself tongue-tied and unable to speak to others. However, he also seemed to have been very resourceful, as he was able to survive on his own without his parents. He also had advanced magical abilities, as he was able to produce a full corporeal Patronus when others could not. Given the strength of his Patronus charm, he likely had much happiness inside him despite his difficult life as an orphan. He was also remarkably courageous despite his shyness, and fought against and defeated an entire army of Dementors himself, saving his entire village. There also was a part where the mouse Patronus had something to do with being able to sneak through the castle etc, avoiding sight completely. So it showed to his fellow villagers something important. Now anyone else that had a small Patronus animal wasn’t made fun of anymore or whatever else! His Patronus saved the world essentially.

Yes you are right, this movie was when they started relying on the watchers to have read the books to fill in the blanks. While this movie does cover most of what happens in the books, it does miss key details that would help you understand how things happen. I do believe you commented over the part that would have made you less confused about the whole Peter Pettigrew and Sirius Black situation. Basically, Sirius Black was imprisoned for deleting Peter Pettigrew and 12 muggles. But what really happened and this is explained only in the book was Peter Pettigrew cut off his own finger, caused an explosion deleting the muggles and vanished leaving his finger behind to frame Sirius Black. To answer yet another question you had about the Patronus charm, there are varying forms of a Patronus, not all wizards are able to do the spell, and the majority of the ones that can only produce the shield version (what Harry first produces). Only extremely powerful wizards are capable of producing a fully formed Patronus, and when a fully formed one is produced it takes the shape of an animal that best represents the traits of the conjuror. Harry's Patronus is a stag or buck deer.

In the newspaper picture of Ron and his family in Egypt (in the paper because the dad had won a prize from the ministry that allowed the family to take the trip), Scabbers the rat was sitting on Ron's shoulder. In Azkaban, Sirius happened to see the paper. He recognized Scabbers as Peter because they had been friends in school and he had seen Peter transform into his rat form countless times (also Scabbers was missing a toe as a rat, the same toe he cut off while escaping as Peter so that it would be found by searchers and he'd assumed dead and in pieces). Sirius knew that time-wise, Harry would be at Hogwarts by this point. Now, based on the picture, he knows Scabbers is living as the pet of a Hogwarts student and will have access to Harry. So Sirius feels he needs to help Harry and also take revenge on Peter, so he escapes from jail in his dog form. He could escape because the dementors didn't really sense Sirius in his dog form (long story short). Lupin had assumed that Sirius was guilty all this time. But when Harry pointed out Peter (who should be dead) on the map, he started to put it together. When he saw them all at the shack on the map that night, he had the whole picture and wanted to help Sirius. Lupin came to Hogwarts as a child werewolf. Dumbledore let him attend Hogwarts but had the shrieking shack created for him to be locked in when it was time to transform. The shrieking shack was thought haunted because of the noises Lupin made as a wolf, and Dumbledore just sort of encouraged that rumor. Sounds mean, but it was all to keep students safe as well as Lupin. The entrance to the tunnel that led to the shack, by the way, was guarded by the Whomping willow, which was put there as a guard. So Sirius and James, being Lupin's friends and roommates, decide after they discover what he is, to secretly study to become anamagi (wizards that can turn into animals), and support him when he transforms. They also helped Peter become one so he could join. They never told anyone, as it was not legal for them to be unregistered. Bear in mind, very few wizards ever become animagi, as it's very difficult. They became Padfood (Sirius, the dog), Prongs (James, the stag), Moony (Lupin the werewolf), and Wormtail (Peter, the rat). They pretty much ran wild and had some adventures and made Lupin's transformations much better. Lupin in his wolf form was not a danger to them in their animal form. They called themselves the marauders and created the map, and just generally caused a lot of havoc in the style of the Weasley twins. There is a lot more to the story that will come up about them in the rest of the movies, but I don't want to spoil it.

The first 2 films were directed by Chris Columbus. This was directed by Alfonso Cuarón. The change in the esthetic and tempo are in large part due to his having a different vision for things. One thing he did was have the kids style their school uniforms with more of their own personal flair and had them start wearing casual (non-school) clothes more. This is why ties aren't tied tightly, shirt tails are out and they look much more casual than in the first 2 films.

This is not a spoiler. My theory is that Dumbledore time travels frequently but that he does so in the opposite way to Hermione and Harry. The kids do the thing, get confused, then go back and act from the periphery and cause their own confusion. I reckon Dumbledore observes himself from a distance first so that he knows exactly what to do when he goes back to do the thing flawlessly.

They could have left out that opening scene of Harry practicing a spell since it directly contradicts not only the book but the end of the first movie where Harry tells Hagrid that the students are not allowed yo do magic outside of school. If they'd left that stupid scene out they'd have had more time for critical information in the Shrieking Shack. As you find out later, Lupin was one of Harry's father's best friends. He loved Lily as a friend who treated him kindly even knowing he was a werewolf. Snape was even worse in the books and there was no lightning during that Quidditch game in the book either. Dumbledore had no choice about the dementors being there. The Minister of Magic ordered them stationed there. The most Dumbledore could do was insist that they remain off school grounds. That's why he was angry when the dementors showed up at the Quidditch game and attacked Harry. A patronus only has 2 functions. To repel dementors and to send an urgent message. If a wizard is strong enough or proficient enough a patronus takes on a corporeal shape similar to a spirit animal. Harry's is a stag just like his father's animagus form. Those scenes in the Shrieking Shack is very confusing without the whole story and they left crucial information out of the movie. Harry's dad, James, had 3 best friends at school. Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. The other 3 had no idea at first that Lupin had been bitten by a werewolf when he was a small child and become one himself. Dumbledore made special arrangements by planting the Whomping Willow over the tunnel to the Shrieking Shack as security. On the full moon, they would take Lupin to the shack so he couldn't hurt anyone while in werewolf form. Janes, Sirius and Peter figured out Lupin was a werewolf and spent a few years teaching themselves to become anamagi so they could keep their friend company while he was a werewolf and still be safe. They also created the Marauder's Map during that time and used nicknames as the authors. Moony = Remus Lupin/werewolf Wormtail = Peter Pettigrew/rat Padfoot = Sirius Black/big dog Prongs = James Potter/stag

Talking about having someone with you to explain things, my dad and i had to explain to my mom the who what how and why of the movie after each one so that she could be up to speed more.
