Broke my hip in 5 pieces pieces at the age of 26 Longboarding down hill with no safety equipment being drunk and stupid. I'm 27 now and still have some residual pain and my life hasn't been the same but I bet I could still outrun some people 😂 I have the Intramedullary Hip Screw guessing by my X-Rays. Some days I can walk straight and some days I can't but phisotherapy exercises are a must for me! If I don't exercise my hip gets really really sore! Maybe if I hit my head It would of knocked some sence into me haha I just joking... I'm glad I can still walk and it could of been alot worse in many ways! Be carful and ride safe! Wear protection! Please

I broke my hip long boarding on Labor Day 3 weeks ago, just now starting using a cane (but mostly walker still) and getting up stairs. I have the IM Nail and a screw into the hip socket on top. Thanks for sharing your story, most ppl I see on here weren’t active nice to know you still can run. Do you do pool exercises? I’m 39 and hope to be walking cane free by Christmas, think it’s possible?

I'm 64 today (2023). I fell and broke my femoral neck and had to have a total hip replacement at 50. I went into rehab for 2 1/2 weeks after a 3 day hospital stay. I was walking Cedar Park amusement part in 4 months with no pain and no assistance. Metallosis (sp) set in and I had 3 revisions which destroyed my hip and leg. I needed a cane after that because of a bad gait. I lost my greater trochanter, not much IT band left and not much abductor muscles left. I've just learned to live walking like this. At least I had my right hip, so I thought. On July 8th 2023 I walked out to my car and my cane slipped out from under me and I slammed on the stone driveway. I fractured my right hip, but I didn't need a total hip replacement this time. They only had to put 3 screws in it. Good blood flow, I guess. It's 14 years later and I've taken a turn backwards. This fracture seems worse than the total replacement. I do have osteoporosis, which contributed to my breaks. I'll never stop the Prolia again, but my life will never be the same. Age has a great deal to do with healing and recovery. I don't even feel like I want to go on. The pain seems worse than the first one. It's been 7 weeks since surgery and the pain is worse then the first 2-3 weeks. Never underestimate osteoporosis. It will get you sooner or later. Thanks for your video.

I’m 65 and fell asleep standing up at 4am. It took me awhile before I was able to stand up. I was here by myself. I couldn’t bear any weight at all on it but was able to sit down with no problem. I had to use a barstool to be able to walk. Then finally I went to urgent care but they were more worried about my low oxygen level, it was 77%, then my hip so they made me go to the ER. There they found out not only did I have a fractured hip but pneumonia I both lungs and a UTI! I went in on sept 1st and came home on the 5th. Been doing in home rehab but if I knew how things were gonna be I probably would of did in hospital rehab for 1-2 wks! I am doing ok tho according to the doctors and PT and OT. I have one more month of PT and only 2 more visits with OT.

Agreed. I had a similar experience. I still have a lot of pain but am determined to get as much mobility back as possible. I wish I’d known I had osteoporosis beforehand so I could have avoided the break in the first place.

I had a neck of femur fracture on 27th December 2023. This was definitely not explained to me. But a consultant saw me on 31st Dec 23 and informed me this is a permanent disability. I have osteoporosis in my 60s. I will receive 6 monthly injections. I was a very independent person. I'm recovering and walking with frames and crutches. I have severe knee osteoarthritis and was due to have a knee replacement on 29th January 24. Operation cancelled. I have had NHS physio but cannot walk properly post operative 5 weeks. I was already walking with a cane. I will chose private physio who will aid me to walk properly. But my life has changed completely, but I have faith in God. This is a very truthful and honest video. Thanks 😊

I had a hip fracture 9 months ago. At 62 I was shocked by the length of time it has taken to heal. My advice is don’t be discouraged, keep pushing by walking and exercising as soon as possible and expect it to take time to get your previous mobility back. With determination and patience you WILL get there!

Great info & super helpful. Poor nutrition, lack of adequate sunlight/Vitamin D, sedentary lifestyles & aging populations probably explains much of the growing problem. But even though I paid attention to these issues, still broke my hip-femur 2 mos ago. Thru a careless household accident, from a standing position. It's now 9 weeks since long-nail surgery & I still cannot fully stand on the leg by itself - too weak yet. However, finding stationary exercise bike cycling to be a perfect hip-leg strength builder. And pain reliever, surprisingly. The 1st five minutes is a bit uncomfortable, but all is good after warming up. Suggest trying this exercise, if you safely can. I'm 58 with a long history of bone breaks & very aware of the risks & experience of not healing properly. You have to get past your fears to get better. Gradually, one little step at a time, if that's how you have to do it - but do it & move. And you should be OK.)

I broke my hip in a motorcycle accident back in March of 2016 (I guess I had a intertrochanteric fracture according to the pic @ 2:59) and had two rods and a screw like @ 5:56. It took me a few months to recover and was back to 99% normal. The only thing is that sometimes when I sleep on my left side (the hip I broke) I can feel the rod or something pushing against my thigh/meat/fat a little. It’s not too big of a deal because I just move to the other side, but it’s been like that since the very beginning. Ever since I broke it every couple of months (maybe every 4/5 months) I get lower right back painI. I’m assuming I put more pressure on my right leg unknowingly since I broke my left hip, idk but that’s where I’m at now. I’m still 99% normal besides the back pain. It goes away after a couple of days then comes back a couple of months later. And no, It doesn’t hurt in the winter lol. I was 19 when I broke it and now I’m 27, about to turn 28 in July.
@dradamrosen
@dradamrosen 7 месяцев назад
If you are 99% normal after a hip fracture that is great. There are many reasons for back pain so if it persist/worsens probably a good idea to get it checked. When the hip breaks it always shortens a little as it heals. You could try a small shoe life in the left shoe and see if it helps your back.

its been 5 months since my hip screw surgery. I thought I was back to normal so I started doing situps but about 10 reps I got sudden pain in my hip joint. I couldn't move. It freaked me out because it came on so suddenly. It went away after about a minute but now I'm worried. Is that normal? I didn't even go through a full range. Only about about two inches short of elbow to knees.

You can so tell that this is an American video . Here in the UK you are transported to hospital , x-rayed . seen by an orthopedic surgeon and operated on the next day ....... all free of charge via the NHS ! Guess what you even get physiotherapy help to recover also free of charge . I know because I fell and broke my hip in Jan 2021 and this is how i was treated , im still getting treatment for osteoperosis and guess what...... its free of charge !

I’m a Canadian. My sister, also Canadian, recently fell down a flight of stairs and had two hip fractures. Ambulance took her to hospital, X-rayed, operated on the following day, sent to rehab, where she is getting good care. She will not have to pay a cent. The only problem is that the ambulance took a while to get there but the fire engines were there immediately. Unfortunately, during Covid, a lot of Paramedics and doctors quit work because they were being forced to take the Covid shot. At least that’s what I heard. I feel for those that don’t have healthcare.

I have the long gamma nail after two fractures in the same leg. I went for a check up x-ray after a year and the thing had shifted. I put this down to using a treadmill instead of a much more mobility walk. I did mention to the doctor I wouldn't be having any more surgery anyway owing to the all the blood now being tainted. 'Hmm, yes' he said. Try to find an autologous practitioner. We didn't always have transfusions. Bit like JWs really.

I'm a healthy 58 year old fell and fractured my greater trochanter fixed with dynamic hip screw surgery 12 hours later. Discharged after 72 hours but two days layer my whole leg and foot swelled up and x rays showed I had got a second post op greater trochanter avulsion fracture in the opposite angle to the first. I was told to keep weight off right foot as much as possible and further x rays after 5 weeks. Those x rays showed the 2nd fracture was exactly the same as before, I'm told this 2nd fracture will likely resolve itself in time but can't be guaranteed so more x rays again in six weeks. Is this likely or could I be looking at another surgery?.Obviously I'd prefer not to have another operation, and am sure the health service here in UK would prefer not to do another unless absolutely essential but if it's going to mean a better recovery then I want it. The last thing I want is to look back in five-years with problems, pain or reduced movement and wish I'd had a second op.

I had an undisplaced femur fracture (transcervical fracture) 6 months ago after a fall. My fracture was fixed with a plate and screws which I now have learned is no longer (for the past 10 - 20 years) common procedure. I am walking ok now though the surgical hardware can at times be un comfortable. I am concerned though why I didn’t receive the latest best practice for my surgery which is just pin and screw. In hospital no surgeon came to explain my situation or to discuss options with me. Only a registrar came who stayed a couple of minutes just to announce that I was scheduled to be operated on the next day and it would be a plate and screws.

Thank you so much for this very informative video. I’m facing the decision for pin surgery for a Grade 1-Grade 2 femoral neck fracture. I have Lupus (going on 26 years) and also recent pinched nerve diagnosis in L4 spine level. I’m 61 yrs old and have had many successful surgeries over the years without any complications or infection. However, I was recently placed on Benlysta due to early detection of Lupus nephritis. All of these complications are causing distress as I’m trying to make the decision to have the hip surgery vs non weight bearing weeks to months of healing (with no guarantees). My rheumatologist leans heavily towards doing the surgery and beginning the healing process asap. While knowing that my mind is mostly made up and heavily leaning towards surgery, I would be ever so grateful for any advice you would be willing to give.

I think this is one of the most honest videos I have seen, warts and all and no punches pulled, which is how it should be It is the patient's choice and to make these life-affecting decisions we need all the information and honest opinions we can get All too often, Doctors try to shield patients from the bad news, but we are not children and need the truth to make sense of how our lives will play out I had a replacement,and 5 days later I fell and fractured the femur, And yes it was a life-changing event, and I didn't know how it would affect me and my family This has helped me make the hard decisions about my future care

I was in an extended care facility for a month and now I am home and in home physical therapy and in home nursing. I broke the same bone when I was 8 years old. I worked very hard to get sent home. A few folks in their 80’s that fell and broke their hips I fear will never leave the extended care facility. I hope that folk that have never broken their hip will be careful and deliberate in their steps because I cannot describe this amount of pain. Good luck to you and may God smile upon you.

I am in reasonable health and exercise walking and water aerobics. I wonder if you should reconsider your data regarding mortality figures? Is it not the case that most of the statistics you present, are applicable to an older age range?? Seriously, I might have been encouraged to be on of the 24% dying in the first year, by jumping off a bridge!! I think you need to be much more careful in qualifying the data you present..or am I missing something??
