Having shot the barrel off of an M240, I can tell you with absolute certainty that the barrel rotated to the right while in flight.

08:00 ish. You said it perfectly. There was an equal and opposite reaction of the barrel to the action of the bullet operating to the right. Just like when you hit a nail with a hammer, the nail exerts force back on the hammer with the mass that the nail has, which is significantly less than the mass of the hammer. The pressure, rotational speed, and friction grip are stronger than the weaker grab of the rifle to pull left. Hence, the rifle is still rolling right. So, the guys saying that the rifle should roll left using the 3rd Law of Motion are right, but not enough. The other factors you have mentioned were left out of their analyses. It is awesome that you showed a real world example.

This is the first I heard of this debate lol. Been shooting for almost 20 years. Well minus during the pandemic due to ammo shortage and ranges closed. Isnt it simple logic that which ever the bullet twists, everything else goes the same way? If your car was lifted in the air and you throw it into drive, and you have the strength to stop the wheel from spinning your car would twist in the same direction as the wheel? Same goes for fans.

That was a good example. I would be interested in seeing a very high-speed video to see how much/if the bubble moved to the right before moving to the left.

I GUESS THE TORQUE ON THE BORE IS THE SAME PRINCIPAL AS A PROPELLER DRIVEN AIRCRAFT, that prop wants to bring the aircraft with it

I learn something every time from you Greg. Since I shoot lefty and use right hand twist rifles, it’s hard to control the muzzle jump to the right. Should LH shooters use left twist barrels or is this jump something else to compensate for?
