@@bobbygetsbanned6049 true, but most of engine building is to do with patience not necessarily knowledge. Specifications and how to measure something can be found in a book. You don't think that Steve just said oh that is the problem. While it might have seemed that way on RU-vid I bet he came to that conclusion after sitting down having a beer or a cup of tea. Sometimes sitting down and thinking about it is as much a part of being an engine builder as using the tools. You will note he only roughly measured one of two possible things that could be adjusted, maybe he needed another cuppa to get the second one.

Good thing that gear did not shear off being how little engagement it had into the cam gear. Some people do not realize that there is a tall and short deck to a big block and they go putting a short deck distributor into a tall deck block and find out it don't work very well and end up shearing the gear off. I have seen that done before it's the first for seeing that issue anyway good thing you found it.

Make a portable tester that has a 12V oil pump routed through a hose with different adapters for various engines... that way you can test the engine (while not running) to see if it has a lot of leakage/pressure loss. Obviously put a large drain pan under the block... maybe mount the electric oil pump to that pan to recirculate the oil (after passing through a filter) while checking for leaks.
