8:50: In fact I like this one so much it's going to be come my new...*hangs it up on the wall* wall piece in place of it's predecessor 9:00: Back to normal #tensecondsoflove
or he recorded the video in multiple pieces. Video editing FTW. he had the KB on the rack in the final parts, but then cut in a piece he recorded earlier which didn't showcase the new toy :)
I had a Radio Shack near me when I was a little lad :D Unfortunately, I think it shut down over the past few years I've been away in the city my username pertains to.
Well, RadioShack is so expensive Overnight aint that much of a difference. Went in once back in 2014 and they wanted ten dollars for one USB cord. Never came back.
8-Bit Keys David, if there weren't enough keys on that play-skool keyboard with the Dora The Explora ROM cartridge to faithfully recreate anything comfortably in your opinion, then how is this one any different for you? Doesn't so few keys essentially make this thing useless garbage for you bud? Thanks in advance my good sir, you've slowly but surely become who is easily my favorite, and most anticipated content creator on any platform, and I truly & emphatically am very grateful that you do this for us, your viewers. You're an invaluable asset, and taking as big of a risk as leaving your place of employment should be recognized by all of us who enjoy your content, so I wanted to make sure I did just that with this comment.
8-voice polyphony and that voice variator actually make this keyboard useful! I would love to play on this thing, just to try out all the possible sounds you can create
I used to make covers in FamiTracker, and hearing these square waves make me wanna get back into it. If only I could make up my mind on what I want to cover! ;
Whenever I log in and see I have new videos in my subscriptions, no matter what has been uploaded, I always watch your stuff first. I really enjoy it a lot. Thought you might appreciate knowing that.
please, please.....please...im from europe , maybe in Usa the jp-800 is not a legend but in europe, this keyboard launched Trance genre, please makena review.
Robert Elkins in my video people keep putting 'fake' even though it is real Hate (and a copyright claim) got the AI video removed on the 8bitguy Chanel. It was a good video
haha, lol, we do. 4.5 dead presidents? it's 1\3 - 1\2 of the money they pay me for a hardworking day. and yes, in the same time it's even a bit more than a half of the price i payed for a similar but more advanced PSS-100 just recently.
I was born in 1996 so I have no nostalgic love of retro things. I do not like retro games. I do not own or play any instruments/keyboards. I have no interest in retro computers. I have no interest in old computer protocols. I dislike Apple products and try to avoid them. Yet I like your "8-bit guy" channel so much that I have seen the majority of the videos on it from the last 4 years. I came to this channel to watch more of your content and have now seen about half of the videos on this channel. My favorite videos are the ones where you explain old computer protocols and point out how various chips work. Yet other channels that do that I find incredibly boring like "computerphile" Point is that since I have no interest in the specific topics you present but I like your channel so much, that you are an absolutely brilliant presenter. To be able to reach people outside of your target audience is quite an amazing ability. I eagerly await your next video.
While that may be the case for him, as a 21yo, I have a deep love for these things, so it can just depend. And you're a radio ham, right? I could have sworn I've heard you mention it before... :P - WU2F
I really appreciate you showing how you built a line-out. That plus the square wave modulation visuals (oh, and even the simple amplified signal drop drawing) gave me ideas.
I had a similar keyboard when i was a child . Its i think an older version of this keyboard. I learned to play music all by my self with this xD. This video bring so much nostalgia . Thx man.
My neighbor had one of these growing up and it was one of my favorite things to mess around with when I was 12 years old. Hearing this play really takes me back! Edit: I don't remember it having 8 voice polyphony though. He may have had an older model or something.
Hamlet is pretty depressed. His father just died and his mom ran off to marry his uncle Claudius the first chance she got. To make matters worse, his dear old dad's ghost showed up and told him that his uncle killed him to steal his crown. Gasp. But Hamlet can't go around just accusing his uncle Claudius of murder and treason without any proof, now can he? What exactly would he say? A ghost told me? Yeah, that'll go over well. He debates whether he should kill his uncle to avenge his dad's death, or if he should wait it out and see what happens. So he hatches a little plan to make everyone think he's lost his marbles while he attempts to uncover some more evidence.. Strangely enough, it kind of works. Everyone totally thinks Hamlet is actually gone mad. A nobleman, Polonius, thinks it's because Hamlet's in love with Ophelia. Claudius isn't so sure. So the two men set a trap for Hamlet. They use Ophelia as bait to get Hamlet talking. The two men will hide and wait to see what happens when Hamlet encounters Ophelia, hoping they'll be able to judge from Hamlet's interaction with her whether he's been driven mad by love, or by something else entirely. Poor Ophelia. She actually loves Hamlet and now has to lie to him. Hearing Hamlet approach, everybody clears out so Hamlet can privately deliver one of the greatest speeches of all time. What's the question? "To be, or not to be," of course.
Other square wave keyboard you should try to acquire is the Letron MC-3A or any of its clones (Thompson, Fujitone, Fujiyama, First, etc). It is very similar in that it uses a digital square wave oscillator to produce tones.
sounds familiar to me as well but this is all I can think of ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UA-Nm3qG93Y.html or the ending of the song ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UA-Nm3qG93Y.html
Dang, those keyboards are older than me 😂 How I wish I can fix our old Yamaha Portasound 790 that got stucked for years just like the way you restore things.
Not sure if it's RU-vid altering the video quality, my computer, or what, but when you showed the square wave animation, there was some screen tearing and jerkiness.
I knew it was gonna be PWM. That's about the only useful thing you can do to a square wave... LP filtering just turns it into a boring triangle and HP turns into an annoying sounding buzz. If you have the circuitry to make a square, why not add some components to make it a sawtooth instead. Much more versatile waveform. Integrating (RC filter) the square and half wave rectify gives you a nice sawtooth approximation over a reasonable range of frequencies. The RC filter gives you a rough triangle (sine-like) waveform and rectification gives you the even harmonics.
You sure did a good job making your song fit the Ultima mood. If someone had shown it to me and told me it was an unused track from Ultima VI, I'd probably have believed it.
Wow, the voice variator makes all the difference on this! I would have loved to have that as a kid. If it also had sawtooth to choose from, then it would be just about perfect, but for square waves only it's still quite amazing and flexible.
2:08 I've noticed that the YAMAHA keyboards I've personally taken apart are also relatively simple to disassemble and reassemble. Have you (or anybody reading this comment) had the same experience? The keyboards I've worked on are all 21st century models.
Volume reduction is probably done by bit reduction from 8 bits to 7,6,5, or even 4 bits. And since 8 bits is very low defined this means that the lower volume parts of the sound such as the tail disappears. This is because this sound were defined in the lower bits that was discarded.
fun vid :) but I think there something more than just square waves on here. some of them sound much closer to saws and bell chimey sound is most likely some type of FM synthesis. Since this is a Yamaha too, they pretty much threw FM into everything.
good point. maybe it's a PSG chip that can produce a couple different waveforms, like that of the NES for example. I heard some sawtooth-ish stuff as well
Is the capacitor for protection only (block DC)?? Could this same capacitor be used directly on the speakers wires (in case the output signal was not too hot to use it)?
"I like this so much it's going to become my new wall peice." Then in the next camera cut it's immediately gone. :p (And I totally didn't notice the essentially identical comment right below this :p)
This keyboard seems rather interesting. I happen to own a Yamaha PSS-100 w/ PortaSound Digital Recording. The 16 voices are exactly the same, well..the 8 that the PSS-125 has.. This keyboard has almost the same features as the 125. I can send you a photo of it if you want to. :)
2:17 “ went to my local radio shack “ Out hear in the country we ain’t got radio! *we got some stupid “internet telephones” made my some computer company names apple computers >:-c*
sometimes I hate iPhones! Sometimes I don’t! (Why I said internet phone is becuase the i in any apple device means internet. *original iPod users be triggers* XD)
NIKKU?????!?!?!? Holy crap! Hello! It's Friskyfan from Drawception! Anyways accordng to wikipedia, a Pulsewave ISNT a Squarewave, its simular to it, Here you read what it says, A pulse wave or pulse train is a kind of non-sinusoidal waveform that is similar to a square wave, but does not have the symmetrical shape associated with a perfect square wave. It is a term common to synthesizer programming, and is a typical waveform available on many synthesizers.
Frisk Determination?!?!?!?!?!!?!? Oh my crap! A square wave would be a type of pulse wave, though, being exactly the same as a 50% pulse wave(which the NES is known to have). Same way squares are a type of rectangle.
Squares are Quadrangles... yet not all Quadrangles are Squares. Square Waves *ARE* Pulse Waves... yet not all Pulse Waves are Squares. It's all about the "Duty Cycle" of the Wave Form. This is where we get "Pulse Width Modulation" from :]
Dave, I own a Yamaha SHS-10, it is a very nice keytar from the 80's. I suggest you to give it a try. :) I would love to see a video review of it made by you!
SK-5 at 7:50 - "This keyboard has a really dirty sound to it, because it only produces sound at something like 11Khz or something really low. It may even be like 8Khz. The PSS has a cleaner sound to it, I really feel I can do better stuff with this old (PSS 125) square wave keyboard". The "dirty" sound is exactly why those SK's are so sought after! They crunch the sound of the samples and give them extra character, whereas "cleaner" samplers sound more sterile in comparison. It's the same reason that first generation high end (but low bit rate) samplers are so sought after e.g. Casio FZ series, Ensoniq Mirage, Korg DSS-1, Fairlight CMI, E-Mu Emulator 11 etc., whereas many of the later and higher sampling rate samplers are ignored. The earlier "dirty" samplers added extra harmonics, transients and artifacts to the sound that is hard to reproduce in VSTs. The later "cleaner" samplers offer little that can't be done much more easily and sonically identically with computer VSTs. Those SKs have so much character in their low bit rate sampling sound and have a lot to offer when using them in recordings, and full on compositions can easily made using one as the sole sound source.
Hey psst man, yes you! You got some... ehm ...keyboards?? How much do you want for one to Europe? ;) :D Great video as always, i dont know why i enjoy them so much... i guess i just like them and i dont need reason for it :D (i really want to buy one )
Can you recommend a cheap MIDI module? I have an Alesis Vortex keytar and I'd like to plug it into a dedicated MIDI module instead of setting up a DAW on my PC every time I want to practice. It needs to be able to let me use the pitch knob to pitch swing notes. I kinda like prog rock. But I feel kinda lost when trying to find out what MIDI module to get.
