Propane and rescuing hand tools is this weeks subject. Cooler temperatures means having the heat on. But, last night the propane went out. No heat, no refrigerator and no stove. We replaced the propane and are adding cut off valves at the tank storage area. We also have more Disston handsaws to redo. Follow along our journey on the main channel (listed below) as we fit together our homestead piece by piece.

I remember when I was little, my dad had a mini saw, also a small hammer, and I would go into his carpentry shop to play with pieces of wood and those small tools. My dad took great care of all his saws, sharpening them and pouring oil on them like you do.

LOL, I did the same thing as a small boy. My grandmother actually supervise my first treehouse build. And I’ve kept going ever since

My dad was a carpenter, and he rated his saws as- coarse teeth = rip saw.- fine teeth = crosscut. Some saws double as a square using the handle and the back of the blade. A very handy feature.

Turn on one tank when it runs out then switch the tanks that way you will know when you are out on one tank know when 🎉o get it refilled.😊

@OutpostReview 9 месяцев назад
Yeah I’m guessing right around 45 to 60 days is how long they will last me with everything running in here. I am going to get an extra tank for a back up that way I can power everything back up and fill up the two other tanks

Richard think you need a permanent propane tank, would save you a lot of time. I know in that area there's not a lot of propane companies.
@OutpostReview
@OutpostReview 9 месяцев назад
I have the option to rent one from the propane company. However since I’m off grid and anything delivered publicly goes on record I’m not so interested in having the tax assessor and his brothers out here snooping around on what I have done

A good sharp hand saw can cut as fast as a power skillsaw . The only problem is you're the motor and battery.😉 the noise is much better, tho. It's kind of amazing how quick and easy it is.

Absolutely. I love using tools like that because it is kind of therapeutic in a way. I have those others that I need to get sharpened and then use. Hope you enjoy the video

I'm not sure who makes them but a relative of mine has two tanks like that hooked up for a kitchen cook stove. Outside at the tanks there's a selection valve that points to the tank in service. Pretty handy.
@OutpostReview
@OutpostReview 9 месяцев назад
Yeah I suppose that would be nice to have. I turn both tanks on the pressure equalizers in the line so there’s not any more being used than just do wanted to time at a time

That fence looks first-class! As for the propane; I’d recommend an automatic change over regulator at the tanks. When one empties the auto-reg switches to the other tank and a red “flag” indicates the empty. Without turning anything off the empty can be removed, refilled, and reinstalled. The system will continue to run off the second tank until it is empty and the whole process repeats. This all happens without any loss of pilot lights and such. I’m glad that you transport tanks vertical, technically its the law. The requirement is that the relief valve must always be in vapor space. If a tank is full and laid down, the valve is in liquid space. If the pressure relief were to blow off, liquid would be released and its 280 times more condensed than vapor. Funny, I haven’t “talked” like this in 24 years, now I’m a pastor not a LP serviceman. Lol

One more thing, lines shouldn’t need purging simply because of an out of gas condition. Replacing lines perhaps, but what you did in this video probably didn’t need a purging; it didn’t hurt anything of course. The auto regulator prevents all of these issues.

Yup, I think an extra or two would be the thing to have just incase it's a bad winter Richard and me thinks a battery on hand for the refrigerator would save your bacon incase of another run out. Glad you got the saws all out and shared them with us. Stay safe around there and keep up the great videos. The fence turned out real good, now you have a hitching rail for the horses when they get there. Keep up the good videos and the fun you all have around there. Fred.

Yeah I’m going to pick up an extra one. I figured that all of the gas that I use in here I’ll probably have to replace them probably three times during the winter which is not bad at all

Man I’m lazy enough to have a full size tank buried in the yard. That’s a big chore. My uncles home was all propane and he would prebuy his fuel in the summer when the prices are low and have it delivered in the winter. I don’t know if they all do that or not. The propane dealer in my neighborhood has tanks larger than you have and they come out and fill those stand ups as well. Love old tools. I’ve got a several as well. Had to stop buying them as I was running out of places to put them 😂. Take care down there!
@OutpostReview
@OutpostReview 9 месяцев назад
LOL, I have to have something to do, Ha ha ha. I don’t think that we can buy during the summertime and have them delivered in the winter besides the reason that I chose not to get a propane tank rental from the gas company is it goes on public record anytime they deliver. I don’t want the tax assessor in his brothers up here snooping around on what I have done. I figured that I’ll probably have to replace them four times a year which is not bad at all

Hi, this is Franz from Austria, I would like to give you some advice: Wouldn't it be better to put the propane bottles under a roof, as it blocks the sun and protects the bottles better from the weather? Kind regards Franz
@OutpostReview
@OutpostReview 9 месяцев назад
Not sure. I’ll Have to look into that. I know that the 500 gallon tanks sit outside by themselves all year long. That’s what most people use. But I chose to get the smaller bottles

How do you clean the rust off your saws? They don't saw well with rust. I have a 300 gal. buried propane tank. Last winter my supplier had problems retaining drivers and they nearly let me run out twice. Some neighbors did run out. I have a propane furnace and also a wall mounted propane ventless heater in case my electricity goes out. In our tent deer camp, we manifolded two propane tabletop cook stoves and two wall lamps so we could work on each appliance individually in case of a malfunction. We learned that at 20 below F when the 20 # bottle got low, there wasn't enough pressure to run everything. We were considering going to a 50 pound tank but stopped going hunting because of a death in the group. You need to be careful transporting a 100# tank because the valves don't close properly if it is laid on it side and it can leak. Makes it a bit hard to transport. We already had several 20# tanks from camping trailers so we used what we had. There is a grease that is in propane and it will sometimes foul orifices in stoves, wall lights, and lanterns. We would sometimes have to take a propane wall lamp down and clean the orifice with welders nozzle cleaners.

I always transport mine upright.They make some short fat 40 gal tanks That might be what you’re looking for I don’t know.
@samsulfaro5109
@samsulfaro5109 9 месяцев назад
Yea Richard you definitely need two full spare tanks when you run out don't want to run and get tanks filled in the middle of a ice or snow storm maybe you should think about getting a two hundred and fifty pounder or five hundred pounder and have your propane company come fill them your not getting any younger
@OutpostReview
@OutpostReview 9 месяцев назад
Yes I thought about that. I’m trying to stay away from anything being public record. If the gas company comes and fills it that’s public record. Trying to keep all of the tax assessors and everyone else out of the picture. The hundred pound tanks and up are not charged any taxes on fill up. That’s why I chose 100 pound tank. I don’t mind going and getting them filled. I am going to get an extra just for that purpose

I keep watching people using an adjustable crescent wrench incorrectly. I just watched you. You don't loosen objects with the adjustable jaw. The wrench is not designed for that. The jaw is to hold the wrench tight. The part of the wrench that doesn't adjust is designed for you to apply pressure for loosening. Using the jaw, the wrench could slip or even break using the adjustable jaw causing injuries. I've seen this happen.

I don’t know why you are using the smaller tanks for your home, instead of having a larger 150 gallon tank or a 300 gallon. Using the tank you are puts you at the mercy of the higher propane prices in the winter months instead of having a larger bulk tank that you fill one a year in the summer months when propane is cheaper. Also you could instal a buried propane tank that would be out of the way and at a constant temp and not affected by temperature swings.
