I think that this particular aria is one of THE most beautiful pieces of music ever composed. Thank you for posting the piano/vocal score - I really enjoyed this!
I haven’t heard this in a while but I remember it as very compelling. It came with a recording of her singing the mad scene in Hamlet and the final scene in Anna Bolena. I like that there was a chorus and other singers as well so it felt more like a performance than a recital.
Yes, and the LP is one of the glories of the age of the gramophone. She gives a masterclass in what bel canto singing is all about. No one has been able to come within a thousand miles of what she accomplished vocally and dramatically in each one of the scenes presented.
O potessi saper leggere la ....musica....: finalmente posso leggerne le parole...e così invio questo spartito alle mie nipotine per farle " accedere" al mondo dell'opera... Spero così anche per le future audizioni. GRAZIE!!!!
My favorite part as well. It's so beautiful. When she performed this live at 9:07 she puts her hand up around her head simulating her mind blowing bc its the part she loves.
I first learned IL PIRATA not from this Studio 'recital' LP but from a live performance by Callas...this was in the mid-'70s in NYC and we would go down to the Village to a record shop that had 'pirated' recordings - live performances that weren't legally available. I remember every note, every nuance of Callas' performance. This Studio recording is probably a little more precise but no less dramatic. Thanks so much!
It was the fashion at the time, unfortunately, and by the time uncut performances were seeing a comeback, operatic singing was no longer at the level of Callas and her predecessors.
She did not only cut bel canto roles, she even cut some verismo like Madama Butterfly, she even wished if she can cut Vissi d'arte as she believed it had no place in the drama progress. Sometimes she's right to keep the action moving as both her and Serafin agreed, but in many cases it's such a loss.
