Hello, Jay and Amber! Ernesto Phillips is the keyboardist/band leader and the vocalist is the great Renee Diggs, unfortunately both of them have passed away. May I suggest you guys the next Starpoint reaction, please try "The More We Love". There are a lot of great female vocalists on bands like Alicia Myers (One Way), Belinda Lipscomb (Midnight Star), Tawatha Agee (MTUME), Sharon Bryant and Barbara Wheaters (Atlantic Starr), Mary Davis (The S.O.S. Band), Belita Woods (Brainstorm), Deborah Cooper (Change), you should have a listen. Cheers from Brazil!
Her voice is so perfect. The bass line drives the song. The keyboards keep everything light. Such a great song! You both looked like you were into the song from note 1. Renee Biggs is the singer. The keyboard bass is played by Orlando Phillips. The Phillips were brothers and started the group. Such a great sound from the 80s.
@@Deborahtunes Absolutely! I'm still upset that when they did nu-shooz I can't wait they didn't do the long dutch version cuz that version is a true classic!
@@TonyTheLoneRiderSmith ~ I hear ya. Unfortunately a lot of times the videos that were done for these songs are a 45 single cut, instead of the longer Lp version. Especially from the 80's...
They opened for Morris Day and the Time, Luther Vandros, and Atlantic Star at different times. There was a really good sound in the clubs then: Keith Sweat, Ready for the World, Alexander O'Neil & Cheryl, and of course Midnight Star (you'll love Midas Touch).
The song "Lost in Emotion" by Lisa Lisa will make you dance and put a smile on your face. During this period a few different groups had similar sounds.
And my personal favorite by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam w/Full Force is their first big hit "I Wonder If I Take You Home" - 1985. That was a big dance hit in all the clubs.
@lisalisa13 Indeed! I graduated in '83, so MTV was a huuuuuuuuuuge part of my life at that time. Plus, I studied dance professionally and going to the clubs was everything! Ha!
One of the members of Starpoint helped discover Toni Braxton. One day Toni went to the gas station when gas station worker/songwriter knew from around that she could sing. He then introduced Toni to Ernesto Phillips of Starpoint, who took introduced Toni & her sisters to Arista Records. The sisters album didn't do well, but newcomers, L. A. Reid & Babyface wanted Toni from a demo they heard her sing on. Toni sang on the Eddie Murphy "Boomerang" soundtrack and the rest is history!
Their song Restless is great too. You should listen to Ollie & Jerry’s There’s No Stopping Us. I just heard it on the radio today for the first time in ages. Great song.
In 1990, Renée Diggs recorded a solo album titled Oasis that was released in Europe. Several of the tracks on this album were co-written by Diggs and Starpoint guitarist Ernesto Phillips. She created the Renée Diggs Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis, to help bring attention to the disease. She died on March 18, 2005, due to a heart condition, at the age of 50
More ideas for some funk/r&b: Lakeside - Fantastic Voyage; Slave - Just A Touch of Love, Watching You, Slide; Tom Browne - Jamaica Funk; The S.O.S. Band - Just Be Good To Me, Take Your TIme (Do It Right); Midnight Star - Freak-A-Zoid; Skyy - Call Me; Atlantic Starr - If Your Heart Isn't In It, Secret Lovers, Always (these are ballads); Herbie hancock - rocket, ready or not (most instrumental); Rick james - you and i; Narada Michael walden - I don’t want nobody else (to dance with you).
Jay & Amber, You are overdue for the Great Dionne Warwick's - Walk On By, Do You Know The Way To San Jose, I Say A Little Prayer or Alfie!!!!. All Burt Bacharach/Hal David written hit songs. Music by Burt, Words by Hal. Timeless Music. The Songwriters Hall Of Fame presents the Hal David Starlight Award annually for his longtime support of young songwriters.
A song I always loved, and played it just about every bar and club in my youth. Such crystal clear vocals. Love her voice. And a song that touched all genres, from funk to disco and with even a rock guitar solo. They jam, and if you ever watch it again with your eyes open this time you'll see how much they love to play by their expressions. Great reaction!
Another favorite from my pre-teen years. Starpoint's Renee Diggs (RIP) was a phenomenal singer, but wait til ya'll hear Angela Winbush, "Your Smile" or "Angel'...you'll get another phenomenal r&b singer and a song so heavy on the bass that Jay will be bIown away. I keep saying it...
Thanks for this classic guys. Continue to R.I.P Miss Renee Diggs❤. Here's some more 80's Funk classic One Way: Cutie Pie (1982) Morris Day & the Time Cool (1981) Bar kays She Talks To Me With Her Body (1982) Gwen Mcrae Funky Sensation (1981) Cameo Shake Your Pants (1980) Midnight Star Wet My Whistle (1983) Gap Band Party Train (1983) Thanks Jay and Amber 😊.
Great one from my teen years and still listen to it. The 80's and 90's had some of the best r&b imo. You might check out Shalamar (Jodi Watley was in that group just before going solo) "Dead Giveaway" is a good one. Also "Don't Disturb This Groove" by The System, and "The Rain" by Oran "Juice" Jones are quintessential 80's. Amber, I love what you said about the shoulder pads/ladies of the 80's! I think Gen Z may make fun my generation with the all the hair, bold make-up, and crazy outfits, but it took a lot effort (and hair spray) to go to school like that everyday. When I drop my son off at his high school, the kids look like they all just rolled out of bed. 😄 You guys have a great Labor Day weekend!
Loved her voice and was saddened to hear of her passing. She has a duet with a singer named Cliff Dawson called Never Say I Do, which is beautiful!! Other 80s people to check out, the late Colonel Abrams and his cuts, Trapped, How Soon We Forget, Over and Over and Leave The Message Behind The Door
Thanks for the Starpoint reaction! RIP to the great Renee Diggs. What and amazing singer! I was in high school during their glory years. So many great songs! The entire Restless album was fire! But my favorite song is, The More We Love! For my wife and me... that's our song!
'She can Sang'... You're Right about That, Amber! Don't think I have ever heard this on radio channels that I mostly listened to in the day, but I'm on the downside of 70, so that may explain it! Great Reaction, Guys! :)
That is an Oberheim bass synth. This band is from my home town. The lead singer worked at a bank in my town while they were shopping their Polygram deal. I am friends with two surviving members. Additionally, one of my neighbors growing up, was a touring keyboardist for them. Another friend was their sound designer, and another was a touring guitarist. Love these cats.
I looked it up. It's a keyboard bass. There are six members. Four are brothers. The singer is Renee Diggs. Sadly the guitarist abd her both died young (younger than ne at least) . He was born in 1953 and died in 2004. She was born in 1954 and died in 2005. Both 50/51 they existed from 1978-1990 and released 10 albums in 12 years.
I was 21 in the summer of 1986, The club we used to go to all the time to go dancing would play this all the time. I still have my 45, and this is a fantastic song. Brought back so many good memories. Oh and we definitely loved our shoulder pads back then!
Actually, you did a reaction to Starpoint a while ago the song was "He wants my body". There were several other star named groups in the eighties also, including Atlantic Star, Five Star and Midnight Star.
I've always loved that keyboard melody in this song. It's so addictive, and it blends perfectly with the synths, beat, and the lead singer Renee Digg's vocals.
It’s a keytar. It allowed keyboard players mobility since they were usually forced to stand behind their gear. It didn’t have internal sounds it controlled other keyboards via midi. A lot of guys used to to trigger synth bass parts.
Oh man I forgot about this song! This was all over the radio in the mid eighties, brings back so many memories! Starpoint’s star power (pun intended) never rose to where I felt they should have but this was a solid group but yeah, this basically is their signature song.
How do I not remember this one??? I was 20 years old in 1985. I was at the clubs partying every weekend. I consider myself an 80s music expert. It seems like I might have heard this, but I’m not entirely sure. But honestly….I’m liking it a lot. I can see why this was a great dance tune.
Finally! Amazing group - putting in work for a lot of years, big on the R&B scene ... and then this one broke big on the Billboard hot 100. This song was all over the radio. As it should have been. Lots of great R&B yet to be heard from this great decade. I will suggest this one AGAIN ... "I'll Be Good" by RENE & ANGELA. Right in there at the same time with a PHENOMENAL video you will love. The song and video is everything you love about the 80s (and then some).
“Dance Party USA” vibes here. ☺️ I’m digging that you’re both loving these 80s tracks. If they ever invent a time machine, you’re both welcome to come take a trip with me back to the 80s.
I was obsessed with Dance Party USA!! No one else I know remembers it sadly. I used to dance in my livingroom right along with the show. Such pure memories. Thansk for the trip down memory lane.
Great song Renee Diggs was a vocal beast she past away in 2005 her life partner and band member Ernesto Phillips past away the in 2004 Checkout Til The End Of Time it's a 🔥 ballad
Fairly new to your channel. I was about to suggest this song, but I see you've already discovered it! One of my favorites from the 80s! So sad to see the singer passed away.
Hey guys. My wife and I have been watching your music and movie reactions all afternoon. Great fun content. Anyway, you guys seem to be enjoying the ’80’s rock stuff. Try “River of Love” by Lynch Mob. This band was formed by Dokken guitarist George Lynch and was a pretty big step up from Dokken. Also, try “Play with Me” by Extreme. Nuno Bettencourt is their guitarist and he’s one of the greatest ever. Enjoy!
They're originally from Maryland, but they used to record in New York, in a studio right down the street from the hospital where I was born. I love their music. Lead vocalists were the late Renée Diggs and the also late Ernesto Phillips (the guitarist). They died about a year apart. Check out their "Am I Still the One," "Emotions" (with George Benson-like guitar and vocals), and the playful "What You Been Missin'."
Man!! I haven't heard this song since it came out in my sophomore year in high school (1985). I sure miss the great R&B music from the 70's -early 00's. It is my favorite genre of music. This was a great pick you guys! Thanks!!
Yeah, when we were in secondary school this was the song playing at those school functions. When there were fundraising and talent shows this was the song back in the day.
Her name is Renee Diggs....unfortunately she passed a few yrs back ..I forgot from what...she was also the girlfriend of one of the brothers in the band whom passed as well
Remember this song from the clubs in the mid 80's. It reminds me of a song from around 1980 called "Disco Nights (Rock Freak)" by GQ. Anybody else remember this one? Jay & Amber maybe you can check that out sometime. Thanks. 😎
Takes me back to the 80’s. There was a nightclub in the hotel across from work. We would walk over at 5:00 and stay late (sometimes close the place) then do it all again the next day. Being in my 20’s in the eighties was perfect.
This was one of my favorite songs. I had to hear it before I left for school in the morning. Which was a lot when you have to leave the house at 7am to make it to school on time since I had to take public transportation.
This song was on a CD of 80’s songs that my son used to listen to when he was young. Somehow he started referring to it as “The Baseball Song”, so that’s how it’s known in my house. To this day, I have no idea why. 🤷♂️
This is why music is so AMAZING! Whenever I hear this song, I can remember EXACTLY where I lived, where I worked & what I was going thru even right down to who I was dating. So deeply impacted in my memories, this song. I'll always have a soft spot for it. And yes, as others have stated, RIP Miss. Rene Diggs, She was sorely underrated.
