Hi, Wes. Are you referring to Otway in western Scioto County, Ohio? If so, there is no coal mining in that area, as the bedrock is right around the contact of the Devonian and Mississippian ages. As far as coal mining in Scioto County in general, there has been only limited coal mining in the eastern part of Scioto County. As far as nearby mines, there are some Mississippian-aged sandstone mines a few miles to the northeast of Otway, and historically, much sandstone has been mined in this region of Scioto County. During the late 1800s, coal would have been brought to these mines to power machinery in the sandstone mines. So perhaps any coal in a historical picture of a local mine from the Otway area is showing coal brought into the area to be used in the mine. @@TheOhioDNR yes and thanks I was aware of the sand stone mines my hay guy has family who owns the ones that have been revamped into a tourist attraction
Gravel doesnt sound like a very interesting topic but some of it can have some really interesting specimens in it. I have found small agates in some gravels along with other gem quality specimens. You need to spray it with water to see the beauty underneath.
