Cereal grain forage trials were planted in the fall of 2020 at the North Central research station to investigate how harvest timing affects the forage quality of 4 different winter annual small grains; cereal rye, triticale, barley, and wheat. On May 7, 2021 the first harvest of cereal rye, triticale, and barley were taken. From previous years of research, we have found that the ideal time to harvest is when the grass head is in the boot. Here, we will show you the stage we harvested in to help you better stage your small grain forage harvest.
