It is a mistake to sand a deck with fine sandpaper, especially with a power sander. This actually seals the grain of the wood and prevents oil from fully penetrating into the wood. I would us nothing finer than a 100 grit. Many manufactures of deck finishes would say nothing finer than 80 grit.I do agree with using an oil finish, rather than any of the water based products. this is imperative with the harder decking woods such as ipe or mahogany.

Great video thanks Shane. Quick Q... I watched ur deck build and noticed you offset each screw on a diagonal on the joist rather than a straight line. First time I've seen it in a deck video. Was there a special reason for that? Cheers mate. Love your channel.
@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads 3 года назад
Thanks Jamie and great question as well. Offsetting the screws minimises the risk of creating a crack along the screw line. Imagine all the screws in one line.....it just encourages a crack to form which water can get into and rot the joist.....hope that makes sense 👍👍....Plus, l reckon the staggered screw pattern looks heaps better. Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺

Love that Cutek oil. I'm right in the middle of redecking the back deck and recycling some of the boards onto a new 'retreat' area. Gunna flip the old decking boards and hit 'em with the sander before laying them and oiling. We clad part of the front and back of the house with horizontal bamboo, 135mm deck boards, 20mm spacing, in front of black painted cement sheet (with a 3mm spacer running vertical on every stud). The east side gets washed and re-oiled every 12 months. The west side, every six (we're about 500 metres from Westernport Bay, looking towards the Mornington Peninsula so that side cops all the weather). The back takes about an hour to do and twice that when I wash it (once a year). The east side, front, takes twice that long and gets washed every couple of years (when the spider population gets outa control 🤣🤣). The deck is a two day affair if the weather is OK and the dog isnt digging holes and deciding to show us his treasures 🤣🤣 I just enjoy looking at how the oil makes everything pop. Great job Shane. I know your pain re. 'tennis elbow' except mine is 'softball shoulder' 🤣🤣😷. Sit back, enjoy a 🍺 and admire your handy work 👍

G'day Ben....yeah l love the grey look as well but in an effort to extend the life of the timber l needed to re-coat it. When l built it, l oiled it. It needs doing every year or so which really isn't a very big job and it looks good. I'm actually about to redo all the decks in a week or so....just in time for summer. Cheers 😁
@jamessunjaya21
@jamessunjaya21 Месяц назад
Knackers when you first oiled it did you do the underside also? I oiled one of my decks (top only) and the boards cupped (130mm spotted gum), then on another deck with same timber I didn’t oil it at all and didn’t get any cupping. Wondering if I oiled both now would I get the same colour and would it encourage any cupping. Both of mine are unroofed unlike yours.

@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads 19 часов назад
Hi Juliet....correct, water based does last longer on the surface as far as far as looks goes. Oil in my opinion does soak in better than a water based product. If you add a tint to your oil based product the look will last last longer than if just added a clear oil....if you know what l mean 🤔 I used to oil mine every two years but have recently let it go as l like the look of the greyed out beachy finish.

Sorry guys. Please never ever use a hard bristle brush on a deck or any other word, what its does is it removes the soft grain and leaving the hard grain therefore creating miniature valleys and it will not end up Smith. please don't do this, best choice probably a green Brillo pad. ( gentle scrubbing, in small circles, never with the grain )

@diyforknuckleheads

Unfortunately Richard it sounds like you used a water based decking oil where this type of thing can occur as it dries very quickly in the heat. The only repair l know of is to sand it off and start again. Glad luck 👍

Mate...the CD 50 will fade pretty quickly and you will need to reapply apply it more often if you want to keep that vibrant colour. Adding a colourtone keeps its colour longer. Good luck 👍
