Hey ! It was time for an oil change, so I decided to film it. This is the first time changing the oil on the new 708cc motor and my first time "priming" the oil filter. Hope you like it, Thumbs up & leave me a comment !

I agree with another comment on the oil filter orientation. But the one minute that it takes to prime the filter is worth the peace of mind to me. Great video, I enjoy the bits of fun you add to them 🍻

On priming the oil filter. On a horizontally mounted oil filter, you can't get enough oil into the filter to make a difference without spilling most of it back out due to gravity. There's enough residual oil on the cylinders and crankshaft bearings to do the job until oil pressure builds up. Just don'tr race the engine, let it idle until pressure is normal.
@NLINE7

I agree !
@Maritimer

Hey Dan, that makes really good sense ! I always let the machine idle until its warmed up before I ride it, thanks for the tip !

@@Maritimer I took another look at your video. Starting at 5:08, when you removed the oil filter, I didn't see much oil drain into the pan (unless it went over your skid plate). So, it seems to me that every time you start your engine, it's starting with an empty oil filter anyway. After all these y ears, your ride seems to be operating a-okay. My ride is due for an oil change. Gotta get it done by the end of this month.

My 2008 Arctic Cat 650 TRV oil filter screws on like at a 45* degree angle, also I believe my 2005 Suzuki Eiger 400 is similar to the same angle. No way I could fill those with oil without a mess, now my Dodge Cummins truck I always pre fill the oil filter with oil since it screws on vertically.

Flip it up and clean off. Screw on with care. Drain plug. Fill with same oil it’s made for the bike. Finish jug of shine with a smile. Cheers bro hope to see more. I just got into the ATV world. drive that quad up on 4 blocks of 6x6 makes life a lot easier. no need to prime the filter enough oil in the engine for start up... . my opinion....my 09 grizzly has 23000kms never primed a filter yet.. oil change every 1K kms diffs get changed too. mechanic 40 years but hey you are doing a thorough job.

@Maritimer 5 лет назад
Hey Brian ! I wanted to try priming the filter, and I have the 708 and you have the trusty 686cc motor, I've heard some stories of blue smoke after an oil change on the new bikes, and figured the prime would help against that. But you are probably right and with 40 years experience who am I to argue haha my background is Electronics and Electrical lol You've racked up some KLM on your machine !!! haha thats awesome ! my buddy Adam has a 2015 with almost 16,000klm on it already haha (He's also a Mechanic) thanks for the nice words though, always nice to get feedback and if a Mechanic says i'm doing good, then I must be doing something right haha

Excellent video.... Thanks! I'm no expert, but the only way I see "priming the oil filter" being of value is it the filter were mounted in the vertical direction. Since the Grizzly 700's is mounted horizontally... I think any oil put into the filter will run out once you tip it on it's side to install it. I did an oil change on my 2007 Grizzly 700 yesterday. My oil filter is stuck on. Going to have to use a bigger wrench the next time I change the oil.

@Maritimer
@Maritimer Год назад
Hey man, yes I run the same oil all year, if you look in the owners manual, there is a chart in there for the weight of oil and the ambient temperature it's good to use in. maybe if you were living in the arctic where it's -40 or lower, you may want to run different oil. here in NB we get days of -30, (windshield and moisture kills us haha) but I dont bother with using different oil.

We'll from what I heard the old 686 wouldn't pass emissions testing anymore so they contracted Subaru to build them and engine (3 year contract, 16,17,18) they had quite a few warranty claims on the 708cc with smoking issues/burning oil, so in 2019 they got the 686 to pass emissions (it runs a lot hotter than the older 686) and they use their own motors. I've driven the 686 and 708 and the power really isn't that much more noticeable, the 708 seem a bit more snappy, but not much. but my buddies 2015 Grizzly will pull wheelies easier than my 2017. top speed is the same. I'm just going with what I've read over the years. hope it helps !

On elf the best things you can do before you even ride it, is read the owners manual front to back, even the boring safety stuff haha seriously you'll learn a lot about your machine, and sometimes they have Break in stuff and when to do your first service. hope that helps ! Hey man ! we'll I'm happy, the 686 is a bulletproof motor, and there have been some people having issues with the 708 (mostly the 2016's) but I wish they would pony up and put a 850 twin in the Grizzly.

Hey Maritimer thanks for sharing. I have a question. My Grizz is the same year as yours and we are in the relatively same climate ( northern ontario) and my bike wont start as soon as it gets a little cold, eg: -5 and -7 in the garage. Do you or did you have a similar issue?
@Maritimer
@Maritimer 2 года назад
Hey ! No, not at all, mine sat for about a month in super cold conditions and I went and it started just as good as it does in summer time. my last camping video, I did a cold start after it sitting outside at -20 all night, no issues at all. tats super weird, Yamaha's as sort of known for being quick starting bikes. You might want to take it in to get checked out...

Now just have to find out if another relay will fix this issue as dont want to have to take out the hair dryer everytime. Hope this helps someone with this problem.

Helpful video on the oil change. My dad always put oil in the filters before starting the motor, I think it makes good sense. You mentioned the metric system, I was just wondering when you bake something in your oven do you put it on 350° or176.67° 😂 seriously though I’d like to know!

Greeting from NW Illinois, USA. I'm considering replacing my '08 Arctic Cat 500 ATV with a Grizzly. I'm gonna wait until the 2020's come out and see if they put a 850 in it. I'll probably buy a used Grizzly if they don't. I'm cheap. lol The last oil filter I bought was a K and N had a nut welded on it. Which is awesome. I bought a really long flat head screwdriver for tough oil filters and give it a little pop with a hammer. Works great on my '06 Duramax fuel filter too. lol Thanks for the videos I enjoy them.

Hey Alan ! Nice to see some of the Yank's tuning in to my videos ! haha We'll a Grizzly is a nice step up from your AC500, but if your waiting for a twin cylinder Grizzly, you will wait forever haha all of us Grizzly riders have been begging Yamaha for a Twin, but they don't do it, not sure why. I know seeing the 850 twin in the new Wolverine is a promising site. I doubt it will be in 2020 though. When it comes out, I might upgrade again haha If it comes down to just money, look at the Kodiak 700 too, its cheaper than the Grizzly and is Almost the same machine....

Like many have said, great video. i do have a question, have you had the blue smoke at all since you have owned it? Mine is a '16 so i have the 708 that everybody is talking about. i am a little concerned about the smoke and longevity of the motor. Thinking of selling and getting a new one with the 686 back in it but i really like my bike. Its the limited edition that they dont produce anymore so i am not sure if i want to get rid of it. anyway, just thought i would ask. i have been problem free other than the popping on deceleration. its going back to the shop in a couple days to adjust the fuel mixture per yamaha, we will see if it does anything.
@Maritimer
@Maritimer 4 года назад
Hey man ! thanks so much ! I haven't had any issues with my 708, I know and feel your concerns for sure, but I have over 2000km and no issues just the same popping on deceleration but I noticed that went down when I started to run Regular gas instead of hi-test/supreme. Also you can do the AIS delete mod (which I plan on doing soon) you just block the hose that goes from your air box into your exhaust (it's to help it pass emission tests) but doesn't hurt the bike, and gets rid of that popping quite a bit. Also I ordered the EHS tuner, it's not really a performance tuner, it changes your fuel/air to make the motor run less lean, so it runs cooler, very good reviews online about it. and lots of threads in the Yamaha Grizzly owners facebook group. you should check that out.

New to the channel can you give your opinion on the bike handling power ?? Etc basically how you like it thanks !
@Maritimer
@Maritimer 5 лет назад
Hey ! Sure can, I plan on doing a review video on my new bike soon. I love the new Grizzly ! Handling is better, suspension seems much smoother than my old 2008 Grizz. Power steering is great, lots of storage spots, the 708 seems to be a bit more powerful than my old 2008 686cc motor, but that could just be clothing or something, I find the 708 to be basically the same power as the 2014-15 Grizzly 686's, some people say its noticeably more powerful, but I just don't see it to be honest. The 708 does run hot and has a few little pops on deceleration, blocking the AIS and getting a programmer is supposed to help that. Now the new 686's in the 2019+ models, they run hot too, probably to pass emission testing. hope that helps.

Priming an oil filter on a smaller motor is not as important as it is on a full size vehicle. With the challenge of the position of the filter its really not worth it. plus the oil pump is really fast, so no loss of lubrication. for the first 5 secs :) Its just a personal preference as well. lol
