Oil Change! Carrera (Porsche 911 3.2 Liter)
That time of year again and Shamoo (our 1986 Porsche 3.2 Carrera Cabriolet) get an oil change. I run you through all the steps and, as usual, I have a few DIY tips/tricks/hacks to make the job a little easier and help you get better results. Oil changes are an easy way to bond with your car and give you an opportunity to poke around and look for things that may need attention.
What you’ll need:
• Oil Filter: MAHLE OC54
(goo.gl/26HMfh)
• Aluminum crush washer
(goo.gl/MxXus1)
• 10-12 Qts/L oil
• At least a 4 gal oil collection pan/bucket. Two are best.
• 15mm socket
• Torque Wrench
• Optional: Silicone grease, oil filler cap gasket, quick drain, magnetic drain plug (if you don’t have one already)
So, I got a question about the drain plug... Do a search on Amazon: Fumoto FG7BN Engine Oil Drain Valve (22mm-1.5)
goo.gl/zWGxzH
Just be careful about clearance... They do make valves without the extension. I even saw a right angle version: Fumoto F309L Engine Oil Drain Valve (22mm-1.5)
goo.gl/TFLQAE
Drain Plug torque specs: 70nM (51.63 ft lbs) & 42nM (30.98 ft lbs) per Porsche Technical Specifications 84-87 (1st edition 12/86) page 63
If you don’t have access to a lift be super careful if you jack up the car. Use good and strong jack stands. Be safe!
Please dispose of your oil responsibly. Auto parts stores and most oil change places will take it for free.

Great instructional tutorial. I didn't know about the quick drain from Pelican! The walk through on checking oil level and temp on the gauges in addition to checking the dipstick with engine running (and the drop in rpm check) was extremely helpful as well, I didn't realize the sender is located in the oil sump.

Yup... Valvoline VR1 Racing 20W50. So much fuss over oil, but I like the high Zinc and, and... You can get it at most auto parts stores! Comes in handy when you are on a trip and you want to top off a little (and forget to replace the bottle from last time..). I've been using it in the three older cars. The three newer get synthetic.

Hallo Fran again just like the draining of the filters on the 993 pinch a hole in the filter, this time however on the up side of the filter this allows air to enter the filter so it drains the oil in the tank so avoiding getting a mess while unscrewing the filter !! Success greetings Arnold
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
Yup, same thing here... Funny, I've not had too much spillage on the 3.2, but I sure had a big mess to clean up when I bought the car. That may be an issue of a proper filter with the correct check valve. This filter lives up pretty high so I think that helps too. Thanks again for the tip! Franny

@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
PLEASE be careful!!! Before we had lifts, Franny used jack stands and jacks but as an extra precaution, she would put (summer or winter) spare wheels sideways stacked on top of each other as an extra precaution in case the car came off the jack stands. You can also look into portable scissor lift, they aren’t that expensive. If you wait until our video tomorrow, you will see a photograph of how we would jack it with both the jack stands and jack. If you are going to do this regularly, please at least consider a scissor lift. Heidi

Regarding my 1986 911 3.2 -if my dipstick is where YOU suggest but my oil GAUGE isn’t moving much (just a little) and hovers a bit over the red but definitely not IN the red should I have my GAUGE checked or...?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 5 лет назад
Ya know, as far as the gauge goes I just get a correlation from the dipstick to the gauge and just be ok with that. The gauge is literally just a float in the oil tank. It can be adjusted. As long as you see it move and you are happy with the movement I would say you are ok.

Great video. Use a crows-foot extension to fit that tight space for torquing the oil drain bolt. Also, not sure why your dash light for oil remained on while you were watching that gauge. I always go with the capacity spec. for the engine and back off about a quart so I can top off correctly as needed. Please always double check that the old filter gasket came off with the removal. That's an easy oversight but one that could cost a bunch. You need a nice sized funnel with flexible tube to do the fill safely. Again, thanks for the videos.

@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
I just looked and there is a gasket under it - I'm pretty sure it came with that. Never a leak. Some folks are a bit worried that if it got hit, it could shear off and drain the tank, but if you hit something that pulls it off, it won't be subtle and you will have many other issues ;) Just something to keep in mind. Sure does make the oil change so much easier. No more torquing the plug and it won't wear out the threads either.

The Fumoto valve should come with a nice paper/felt washer-gasket that goes between it an the oil pan. Oil soaks into the felt (I think) and swells it up. They work! I've found that every 40,000 miles or so I check the valve with my Crescent wrench to see it has come loose/needs a tiny bit of snugging.

Some notes from a fellow tidy mechanic, thinking of that oil filter location. A Form-A-Funnel is a nice option to have sometimes. formafunnel.com Of course, after I bought one, I realized that aluminum foil from the kitchen can work, too. I don't know what kind of access or sight lines you have from underneath that car, looking up at that oil filter area, but here's my tip to reduce "SPLOOSH!" when removing an oil filter: drain it first! Get a large nail. (Look in the rain gutter section of the hardware store. BIG nail.) Sharpen it just a little with a file or a grinder. Put the tip of the nail at the lowest point on your filter, tap it gently with a hammer, it will penetrate the steel can with ease. Remove nail from hole and now the filter will drain. Sometimes adding another hole for air access speeds up the filter's drip. Yeah, I tend to give these things an hour (or an overnight) before finishing the oil change. If not a Form-A-Funnel, you could also catch oil coming from a hole in that oil filter with a funnel with a tube, perhaps. Alas, I've not done an old 911 oil change, so this advice may only be for... other cars.

A bit of advice based on my 35 years of Porsche experience as a driver; I would remove that drain valve from the oil tank and reinstall the proper factory drain plug. It's not that much work to pull out the drain plug and replace it when changing the oil. I would never risk an engine by using a drain valve of that type and have it fail while you're driving, regardless what anyone says. There is a reason why they are not used by the factory... Also, watch that hair and sleeves, hands, etc. around moving parts. I do know someone who had their hair caught in a rotating fan belt/pully, and had a significant amount of hair ripped out. It was an awful sight to say the least. Take care!

Great video for newbies. The Fumoto valve is a must, it makes it really easy as the oil tank has a lot of oil!! What concerns me is how Porsche has been changing the specs of the oil along time. I see you have used 20w50 as per the old specs, and I have just poured 10W60 on mine as per late recommendations... crazy, and probably would nobody understand the change after long discussion.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 года назад
Yeah... oil... There are a couple reasons I use that oil - it gets changed often, I can find it locally anywhere so if we are up in the mountains and I need some I'm good. And, I like the zinc content. By all means use what you feel is the best. Oh, I have another 90deg Fumoto valve and I'm debating if I want to install it on the engine.
@cicli
@cicli 3 года назад
@@HeidiandFranny Unbelieveably I had to take out the Shell 10W60 fully synthetic after only 200km, as the engine was leaking from every point underneath. Now it runs with Valvoline VR1 20W50 and the engine is again stone dry, all leaks have disappeared. Note for all those who want to try the fully-synth way... at least avoid the Shell fluid.

Hi Robert, Here ya go: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-muyDgZV_O0k.html The 993 is a bit involved compared to the other 911s. Ours is a very early car so is a tad different than the later 993s, but the video works for both. Enjoy! Franny

@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 года назад
Pretty straightforward... Disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive. There is a bracket holding the battery down, then lift it out. Install is the reverse.

Hi Franny, Great informative videos! Question: The dipstick in my car is showing the right amount of oil but when I drive and step on full throttle, the orange stick in the oil level gauge goes down. Is that a normal thing then? When I just cruise everything is fine and exactly in the middle. Thank you so much.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 3 года назад
Yes, that is how it should be. When the engine spins up it pulls oil from the tank so you will see that level drop. Checking the oil on these cars (because dry sump) is a bit strange. The engine has to be completely warm and on a level surface and allowed to idle for a minute or so. Best to check when returning to the garage after a run.

Shoot for the suspension hard mounts. The torsion tubes in the wheel well is a strong point and you can get pads for the factory jack points as well.

@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny Год назад
Hi Anthony, they do make a 90° version. I ordered one but it had the wrong threads and I haven't replaced it. It has a rubber gasket if I remember correctly so tight enough it doesn't leak. I've never had a problem with it and it sure makes oil changes easy! F

Not related but... what is your recommendation for the fan belt and AC compressor belt deflection (when pushing hard to a stop) the belt mid-point?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
sportscarnut I don't really go by deflection... My test is if you can turn the engine over with the alternator/generator... If you can then the belt is too tight. You should have to pinch the belt together to get enough traction to rotate the engine through a complete revolution. "Too loose, no juice; Too tight no bearings!"
@sportscarnut
@sportscarnut 6 лет назад
My feelings exactly. I searched the documentation and it is all over the map - Bentley says a deflection of 5mm, Wayne's book 15mm... How do you decide it is too loose? Any way to email you directly?

For an SC, the torque spec is 31Ft-Lbs for both the tank and the steel plate. The higher torque figure is for the 3.2s. Does that answer your question? Franny

I checked our previous work orders and they’ve been using 10w40. As I was checking oil level (after proper warmup, oil temp to 210) there was white smoke coming out after I removed the oil cap. Should I replace with a different oil weight or could this be a different issue? Thanks for any help or direction!
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 года назад
Hmmm... Well, there should be a bit of a vacuum when removing the cap. If you are seeing white-ish smoke that could be blow by from the crankcase breather. Do you see much oil consumption? More than a Qt every 1000mi? Also, drive the car and look for smoke out the tail pipe under acceleration and on trailing throttle, Trailing throttle points to the valves and acceleration the rings. If still inconclusive, perform a compression test and look for any differences between the cylinders. Listen for hissing from the intake (intake valve), exhaust (exhaust valve) and crankcase breather (rings). You might want to try a 20W50 and see if it helps any of the conditions... Good luck! Let me know how it goes. F
