How To Flush and Bleed your Brakes By Yourself!

Hi Everyone, We take a little "brake" from the 911 3.2 Carrera project to bleed the brakes on the 996 Turbo. Super easy and anyone can do this by themselves. The whole process should take an hour or so.
A word about the bleeder I used... The Motive Power Bleeder would not hold pressure. I even tried completely cleaning and using silicone grease, but the valve just gives way. I was able to get the job done, but there was a bit of having to pump and pump... I want to try the Schwaben Power Bleeder to see if it is any better.

Great tutorial. Logical, well organized, and easy to follow sequential set of instructions. I watched a bunch of RU-vid videos and found this to be the best. I.e., removing old fluid from the reservoir and replacing it with new/fresh fluid before you start bleeding, how much fluid to bleed out etc. Most other videos don't mention these important points. Also, I really like the way you use the Power Brake Bleeder unit to only pressurize the hydraulic system. A bit more work to keep adding fluid to the reservoir; however, it makes a lot of sense. Especially the cleanup process when the job is complete. Nice job.

Dot 3 and dot 4 are mixable. Dot 5 can’t be mixed with 3 and 4 but 5.1 can be mixed with dot 3 and 4.

Nice video, good clear explanation. My BMW dealership quoted me $290 for a brake flush on my 2018 X3. I figured I could do it myself and just purchased the Schwaben 3 Liter pressure bleeder plus free catch bottle on sale for black Friday. Looking forward to doing it myself. You have some fine cars, I had leased an i8 from 2016 to 2019, almost bought it at the end of the lease but didn’t want to own such a complex vehicle as it aged, so decided to return it at lease end. Exceptional car in many ways, I miss it. Anyway, thanks for your many helpful videos.

I made a bleeder from a ''weed'' sprayer and a pressure gauge from Home Depot and and extra reservoir cap. Works great and it was cheap. Great job Franny! Super attention to detail.

I'm looking to buy a 996TT (after saving for Many years) and I know I'll have to do a lot of servicing myself. While I'm comfortable working on cars I was feeling a bit intimidated because it's a Porsche. Your videos are a Huge help in this regard. Your presentation, accuracy of information and video quality are all top notch. Great tip on the wheel hanger alinement pin. I have used them on my Mercedes. Light bulb went off. I need to get a set to use my 315/70/17 wheels on my 80 series land cruiser. Changing those wheels on the trail is a strain. No longer. Thank you so much for making me rethink an application of the wheel pin.

DOT 5.1 and DOT 4 are backward compatible with DOT 3, and can be freely mixed. DOT5 is a specialised, silicon based fluid and must not be mixed or used with any other fluid .

Try out a Schwaben bleeder. Worked better than Motive for me. Also, bleed with some fluid in the bleeder bottle to keep it full while going to each wheel. At the end, empty the bleeder bottle and let air lower the reservoir level to the correct height on the last wheel bled. Cheers!

Nice vid. I would add one thing .PFC racing ( supplier to 991 cup brakes) and most people I've talked with who race Porsches at the pro level ( Daytona 24, etc) would bleed the inner caliper bleed screw and then the outer caliper bleed screw for the best chance of removing any air you may have.

This is a great video, very well done. I will say I did this job recently on my C2S, and I recommend just filling the bleeder with fluid. This keeps the master reservoir full the whole time, and you don’t have to remove the cap on and off that way. Great advice on bleeder valve to not over-tighten them. Super smart to ceramic coat the wheels at the same time since you have the wheels off. I did the same thing. I wish my wife was into cars like this, your skills are impressive, and your interest in performance cars is not normal for a female, and that’s fantastic. I would watch more of your videos, love your attention to detail😊

Good video! Used my Motive Power Bleeder two months ago -- did new brakes pads rotors, flush -- and clutch bleed. Power bleeder made job so simple... not so for the frozen rotor bolt that took seven hours to remove with torch, rust breaker fluid, and MUCH patience. Love the channel, waiting for more 911 resto vids...

@@HeidiandFranny It's illegal in the US to sell any fluid that's not colorless or amber in color according to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. It took them 15 years to realize ATE Super Blue was indeed blue. What a joy to view your videos, to see your garage and tools, and experience what it's like to maintain beautiful modern cars. I am learning to maintain my three vintage cars-all with German engines: 2003 VW Jetta, 2000 Ford Explorer, and 1982 Audi 4000S diesel. Should I be afraid to tackle a 1987 Porsche 924? Any caveats about that model year? Also, I purchased the Schwaben pressure brake bleeder and will try it on my Audi today!

Perfect ! exactly the way i do it myself :) I love to see that you use the original Porsche wheel pins, 1 tip ; or if you really want to go nuts.. use a special socket with plastic cover to minimize scratching on the wheel-nut holes on the rims, i love this detailed videos, and 1 more comment; looks like the interiour in the 996 Turbo need a proper detail, i could see some dust and dirt ! HAHAHA

Another culprit of low pedals, at least with domestic vehicles is when you replace the power brake booster...the replacements have adjustable rods, and you have to use a special tool to ensure it sits flush with the master cylinder piston cup, otherwise you'll be chasing your tail trying to figure out why your pedal is soft, but you have no trapped air or fluid loss. Also, if you replace the master cylinder, it must be bench bled, before installing. I love your videos, especially the Beetle vids. My '73 SB is still waiting for its engine, and I'm waiting for my shoulder to heal from surgery.

Thanks for a great video. You don't mention this, so perhaps a different set up on newer cars. I ran into an issue with my '87, when I pressurized the reservoir, it has a pressure relief valve located on the fender side and blew brake fluid all over the inner fender, not happy face. I put a screw into it then it held pressure and I was able to do my brake fluid bleed. Thanks again for the great videos, keep em coming.

Just an FYI.. the main pressure reservoir is designed to contain the new brake fluid and push it through.. You don't need to constantly de pressurize and fill the master cylinder.. new fluid should come from the pressure vessel. If your power bleeder won't hold pressure it's most likely the gasket under the lid is missing.

Great Video as always... so informative and well detailed... did this car have Porsche Stability Management (PSM)? I'd be interested in your thoughts on bleeding and flushing the brakes fitted with PSM as my 2010 Boxster has it.. for the systems with PSM, the guides i've read say I need a PTS2 or PIWIS to activate the hydraulic valves in the brake system while bleeding. I've never seen any videos that do this and some of the forums I've read say its not necessary to clear the small amount of fluid trapped in the hydraulic valve. Thanks!!

That's a great question. The 996 didn't have it so no issue there, but our '06 987 had it and back then I took it to the dealership (they were great about other things so I was fine with that). But the i8 does has active suspension and a similar setup. I looked into it for that and found the same as you did. If you are tracking your car then it might be worth it to open up all the valves and flush everything, but for normal use there just isn't enough there to make a real difference. My suggestion is just to do it yourself every other year and I think you'll be fine. That is my plan for the i8 :)

@@HeidiandFranny - thanks for the response. I have no plans on tracking my car, so that was my thought too, but always nice to get some confirmation. I know that at least one the OBD2 scanners that have Porsche specific modules say they support PSM brake bleed activation, but the documentation is so bad on them its hard to know what it is actually doing. :) Anyway, thanks again for sharing your thoughts, i really appreciate it.

@@HeidiandFranny Hi - I think you've answered the question but please confirm: I can flush my own brake lines, per your video, but every other year have a shop with a PTS2 or PIWIS flush them to ensure they occasionally get fully bled. Is that correct? I hope so.... Thanks for your help - great videos btw!! (I have a 2003 996 C4S with PSM and I don't track my car )

They are the real deal! So much lighter than the winder rims (those are knock-offs). Makes getting them up and down off the rack much easier ;)

Solved a few.problems i had. I bleed my boat trailer with a motive bleeder and run 3 bottles of brake fluid through lines. I kept getting air bubbles every time. Heard the bleeder at brake caliper can leak air throu threads. I put teflon tape on bleeder valve threads. It still disnt stop the air. Thats thou for answering the air bubbles. Was driving me crazy

Those air leaks are a challenge. Another idea is to smear silicon grease around bleeder to help seal air leak.

great info. listened to you and bought Schwaben 3-Liter European Pressure Brake Bleeder and also like put brake fluid in the reservoir not the pressure bleeder.

Thanks very interesting. I became interested in how the braking system worked as at the weekend I found a family of 4 mice had built a home in the front trunk under - I think - party of the braking ABS system. They were all re-homed to a friendly nearby tree. Clearly I am not using the car enough.

We found a (rather dead) mouse in the engine bay of the 993 and the vents of the 3.2 Carrera. That is super common... They can be hard to keep out. I hope they didn't cause too much damage...

For those of us with manual transmissions (G50) the fluid reservoir has an upper (clutch) & a lower (brake) orifice. If you let the fluid level go down past the clutch orifice to the brake orifice, during bleeding, you risk allowing air into the clutch line. The result will be a clutch that stays on the floor (spring pressure). Bleeding the clutch is a b1tch.

Great video my only comment would be never use a ratchet to crack bolts,you will stress and shear the gears and possibly injure yourself.Use a bar or a specific wheel wrench .

You can usually buy the same fluid in very different colors. Yellow vs Blue, etc.

Yes! Using a different color each time helps to know when the old is flushed out and the new fluid flows in.

Great video, just couple safety things, I was always taught not to use ratchet for primary loosening or tightening as lot pressure on small paw of ratchet. More importantly please don’t put your foot under wheel when only relying on jack, always block or place stand under car. Sorry if sound draconian just don’t want see you get hurt.

Tony E No, thanks for that! I didn't film (well, didn't make it into the edit actually...) I have a block of maple locking the jack. It is always a dilemma with these cars that there really is only one jack point. Normally I scoot a wheel under the car, but these are too wide! A break over bar is always stronger, but that ratchet can take well over 150ft-lbs. It is pretty strong. Easily replaced as well ;) thanks for the safety reminder :)

*Check your manual on bleeding order. Every car is different. Every car has different ABS systems. Every car has different bleeding order. Not every car is the same bleeding order.

Oh those Germans and their wacky lug bolts! 😉 Honestly, I think this job is easier with one person working the bleeders and another stepping on the brakes to push the fluid out. I rarely make my son help when I'm working on our cars but I do when bleeding brakes.

Hi Chris, That is what we do for the 356. Just easier. That power bleeder wasn't as awesome as I'd hoped... But, if you only have one person, then it would pretty well in the end.

I had a first today. I replaced a rear cylinder on my truck and had someone pump the brakes while I bled them. 3 pumps and hold, I loosened the bleeder valve, brakes did not go to the bottom nor did any fluid come out. Finally on third try, a "little" fluid came out. Brakes did not go to bottom. Tried 5 or 6 times, a little more fluid came out but brakes never went to the bottom. Drove it and brakes feel a little spongy. I have never heard of the brakes not going the bottom when the valve is opened. Thanks for some ideas,
