Thank you so much I just bought a 2024 LZ0 Jan, made October 2023 I will be contacting my dealer Def issue while towing and drove 3000 miles ans lost a litre which was weird I’m a quick lubw owner in Canada
Good thing this didn't happen on a gasoline engine with catalytic coverter(s) We need more guys like these to dig and post the answer, contrary to the usual ignorance or dumb like a fox answers with service depts.
Thanks for taking the time to make this information public. I was concerned with oil consumption and the service manager at the dealership just blew off my concerns. Ugh! Then a friend told me about your video. Afterwards, I started monitoring the oil level.......it didn't burn oil on normal driving with light towing. However, it burned 1/2 a Qt. on 250 mile trip towing our camper, plus DEF! This is very easy for folks not to notice. We just dropped the truck off at another dealer to make the repair.
Glad you got the issue straightened out. I am actually looking to update my 2019 Silverado next year and am torn between another 5.3 or the 3.0. I am lucky enough to have my truck serviced at the Western Mass dealer with Tim. He is indeed a really nice person.
I am actually a fortunate owner of a 21 that’s “consuming” oil. I will definitely be checking the camshaft cover number and I think I know what I will find. Big shout out to Tim and thanks for posting this update!
Really great to see there are people like TIM and his team that went the extra step(s) to search out and fix the issue. Confidence builder for sure for Chevrolet…
I have a 2013 6.6 200K that doesn’t eat a teaspoon of oil. ZERO leaks (except my fuel, my fault) . I absolutely LOVE MY TRUCK! I also have mad respect for the Ford & Dodge trucks. I believe they all make a TOTAL BEAST.
I have a 22 LM2. I have done a couple of trips towing around 7000lbs, between 1200-1500 miles then empty on the return. Both times the truck has used oil, more than a quart, but the dealer says within spec. Also no glow plug issues but only 18,000 miles(27,000kms because I’m Canadian). I’ll be checking the numbers. Thanks so much for sharing this information!!
Good video information! I’m a diesel mechanic myself and work on big rigs. Burning oil is bad but it’s even worse when you have emissions on diesels. Oil does not burn out of dpfs through a regen. Hoping it does not shorten the life of the dpf for you. And if it does hope it’ll be under warranty! If not delete time lol
Had the same problem, didn't need to tow anything to burn the oil. 2 qts every 1000 miles like clockwork. Needless to say I will not be going back to the same dealership again. They had taken the engine apart over a dozen times to fix it, then it was a constant oil leaking machine.
I have 3.0 F-150 Powerstroke. My DEF range is about 5000 miles on tank of def but it goes up significantly when towing. Don't be surprised using def when towing....
Thank you for your videos. I'm looking to replace my Ford F150 with a 2024 GMC Sierra 3.0 Duramax and I was concerned about the Oil Consumption issue. Now I feel at ease with that purchase.
Tim, just wanted to say thank you. I'm getting scheduled now for my issue. Note my issue came up due to REGEN every 299 miles and one bad glow plug number 3.
Did your dealer replace your #3 glow plug? Also, what are they doing about your DPF? Replace it? Or manual regen? I have a similar issue to you, bad cam-shaft cover, #4 glow plug fault, not #2
@davidcrews6170 they ended up changing #2 again with the bulletin and 3 and 5 were bad as well. Im guessing the issue was getting worse and effecting other glow plugs
I’m guessing towing exaggerates it. I’ve towed our horse trailer but that’s only about 7000 pounds. And only 50-60 miles at a shot. I’m amazed it can hold that oil in there. It’s wicked thin stuff. I changed from the genuine oil to the ESP X2 the last service. It was just a little easier to get. As I side note we’ve got an Equinox with the Turin Vaxhaul 1.6. We’ve had decent service out of that too. I’ve had diesels for many years. I work on them for a living so I’m just used to being around them. Tier 4 has been a challenge but it’s pretty much old news now. Keep up the good work!
I did change the oil after the repair and i used amsoil this time. We’ll see how it does. Ive heard nothing but good things about it. Thanks for sharing the info
Had same exact issue on the 2020 i had, would eat oil about the sane rate as yours. Had glow plug replaced and after it had electronic issues...I traded it in because it too 2 months for the last repair. You are 100% correct.
I’m having the same issues with my 2020 GMC Sierra with a 3.0 Duramax. I’ve had multiple glow plugs replaced, oil consumption study completed and still no movement. Sounds like I need to find a different dealer to look at it. Love the truck, just hate the oil consumption
Thanks for your video, kyle. Your video got me looking at my 3.0. Sure enough, I fell into this TSB, and my local dealer is getting it fixed. Great video, thank you for your info. They changed the #2 glow plug a few months ago but never looked further into it and I brought it to their attention after watching your video.
Thank you for the great information, I don't even own the LM2, but what amazing info for those who do and use excessive oil/DEF. Tim, if you are looking at this video, god bless you.
Spencer, reached out in response to my comment from the hate video. If you had led with the problems and wasn't such a hater of the 3.0. Very offensive. I appreciate the info provided by you about the tsb. You know as well as I do that a dealer will never never reach out. Good job in sharing. I love my 3.0 and the only thing I would do with mine is buy the 2024. If I have offended you in any way, I apologize for my comment. Best of luck with your 2020.
I appreciate that. Not offended. Ive received a lot of backlash from that original video but it led to the repair which ended up helping a lot of people. Some that didnt know they had an issue. My addressing issues with a vehicle should never be takin personally. No reason for it to be offensive.
Didn't i tell you earlier after I watched your first video on your oil consumption issue that the motor was a mechanical object and was subject to issues and that you may have a lemon? So happy for you that Tim helped you diagnose the problem and get it corrected. You should send him a few bottles of his favorite spirit.
@SpicerDesignsLLC Well, now that you got the oil burning issue fixed, you may want to check out the Amsoil oil bypass filtration kit to keep the oil cleaner and last longer 😉
@SpicerDesignsLLC I just did an oil change and used both PPE filter and Amsoil also. I have the Amsoil bypass system and will be installing at next oil change. Also, I'm researching what Oil Centrifuges would work on this 3.0 Duramax motor. Do some research yourself and see what you can find. PPE says that they are working on one. They are also working on an oil catch for the air-to-water intercooler.
My 2020 Tundra makes a popping noise when you first turn then goes away. The dealership said it’s Normal. I’ve owed 3 of em it ain’t Normal🤦🏻♂️ Awesome vid btw
Hello , I would recommend starting a file with gm customer service, the issues you have may resurfaces latter in the vehicles life , your scr and egr ( exhaust particulate filter )plugging and needing replacement wouldn't be uncommon. Somthing to monitor going forward.
I am considering buying one of these, currently have a 15’ 2500. Appreciate the info, trying to do all the research I can, I’ve always have 2500s but don’t really “need” one. Tow a 6,700lb boat locally, and that’s about it anymore.
@@J810MFG i would personally stay away. They seem to be one issue after another but a lot of people have really good luck with them. Its all a crap shoot anymore with vehicles.
@@SpicerDesignsLLC I hear ya there! The other part of me wants to be done with all the new stuff, and get a square body! No computers! No DEF etc… probably just keep the one I’ve got. Paid for is tough to get rid of too.
Thanks for making this video. My LM2 eats oil and def, has a code for bad glow plug on #3 cylinder and has the camshaft cover serial # that falls into this TSB. I went to the dealer and inquired about it and was told they will need to do an "oil consumption test". This entails them changing the oil and filter, then marking the dipstick, oil filter, and drainplug to prevent tampering. They then have you return every 1000 miles to inspect the oil level and ensure nothing has been tampered with for three cycles (3000 miles total) . If the truck uses 1/2 quart of oil per 1000 miles they then download diagnostics and send to GM to analyze fuel use and engine load and compare it to the oil consumption. IF you qualify they will then perform the service at no charge..
@@TheFinnAddict thats bs. If that cover falls under the defective range they say right in the bulletin that it should be replaced. Especially with the faulty glow plug. Sounds like a lot of people are getting hosed with this bulletin.
I just made a deal to trade mine a couple days ago but still have my truck as I wait for my new one. Just checked and mine is under the number and I had the glow plug changed a while ago. I only pull a 6000lb trailer once a while. I have never had to add oil but it is near the lower mark when I change oil. Truck has 75000 miles on it.
@@carmanwright2889 I don't think it necessarily has to be done under load pulling a trailer, but that is part of the analysis of the engine data to determine if you qualify.
@@johnmontgomery9683 I’m glad I traded it because I don’t want to keep a truck that has had the glow plug issue and is part of bulletin and could still not qualify. That’s bullshit!
Julian date format is last two numbers of the year (**) followed by the day number (1-365) so the cover on the example engine was produced on the 252nd day of 19 (09-Sep-2019). So anything older than 21298 (25-Oct-2021), is subject to the bulletin.
moral of story .......know a guy named Tim...........................great video Keystone ..............you are one tough SOB, that stuff is radiator water
Glad u got it figured out and was under warranty. Thank goodness for RU-vid not only can u learn something by watching a video but the viewers can also help out thanks Tim. (Ps should have bought a PowerStroke) 😂
Tks for the vid. Good to know this stuff. Luckily I have the LZ0 but always good to know all issues just in case something similar happens on the redesign. Mine only uses some oil when towing my 7500 lbs brick of an RV. Tks again. And a very big Tks to your buddy Tim.
I solved the oil consumption on the 3.0 duramax in my fleet by replacing that 0w20 crap with 0w40 rotella T6. Hasnt been losing oil ever since. Running good. Hopefully the aftermarket upgrades the oil pump belt with a chain or gear system. Good video man.
Good content even though it is not your main content. I Do Cars tour down this engine about the same time you did this video. Complements parts what you were showing on the engine.
Okay I have to say I just subscribed and liked your video and channel. I also just confirmed my truck is #2017710. My oil consumption is the same as yours and I was told by the dealer that this is just how it is. Plus my DEF consumption is and has been off the charts and was told the same thing. I have 115700+ miles on my truck. I love it except for this. I will be calling the dealer Monday to see what they say. Thank you thank you thank you.
Great video! I usually watch all your regular videos, but I have the exact same truck and motor and this was hugely beneficial for me! Thanks for doing what you do. Keep up the good work man!
I've had this exact problem with my 09 chevy 1500 with 6.0 All I do is tow and it'll go through a quart every fuel fill up. I've spent 10 grand, months of sticking it at multiple mechanics. Every single seal in that engine has been replaced. Turns out i should've just researched it myself because it's only a defective valve cover that I can replace myself along with tuning out AFM. Still tempted to ditch the truck after all that.
What an awesome feeling finally finding the culprit!!! I had a similar issue with a Jeep engine, basically, that "hole or orifice" in your crankcase makes you have a vacuum in your engine and sucks the oil into the cylinders.... I guess the next concern with the diesel is what premature wear was placed on the DPF itself... Does your state require diesels to perform emissions testing? Sure would be a shame if you hit a bump and all that stuff fell off...
Stumbled across your video and subscribing just for the dark humour lol! Also, this is another reason why catch cans are a great idea except guvmint officials don't like that kinda talk.
Finally, we can stop hearing you cry bout your truck, lol. Thanks, Tim, for getting this issue for kyle resolved 😂 Dry Jan is almost up buddy hang in there. Cheers
I can’t thank you enough for sharing this! I have a 2020 1500 LM2 that has gone through 6 glow plugs and consumed gallons of oil since buying it. I went through 4 effing years where the dealership diesel mechanics had no clue about this TSB issue. I presented the TSB you referenced. They’re now replacing the valve cover housing under the drivetrain warranty. It’s taken them 3 weeks to do it. Have you had ANY issues with your LM2 since they replaced it? Thanks again!
@@jplassins thank you! I am putting an update video together in the next week or so. My dealer is horrible so i had some quality issues. Otherwise its been fine. Good luck with the repair.
Too bad you had issues with your truck. My 20 LM2 has been perfect. Absolutely no issues. Best running truck I’ve ever owned. 30 MPG all day long. 0 oil consumption. Every model can have a dog and I guess that one was it.
I was a GM tech and a pro GM buyer. Since my 2009 Silverado had an AFM lifter fail, I have never bought a GM product since. Now all they build is junk. Good luck with your Baby diesel. Wait till the oil pump drive belt or injection pump fails. Terrible design engine
I was kinda hoping you’d have an answer for me. My 2012 GMC 1500 consumes about 4 quarts of oil between changes. idk?? Also, the rear differential almost ran out of gear oil. I couldn’t believe it. Just one more thing I have to check regularly.😢
😂😂😂😂😂 your awesome dude! Hilarious!! And you spend alot of money on this truck you want it right and to work! Great video!!! Keep up the great work my friend!!
My thoughts are that the particulate filters job is to remove by product/leftover and unburnt fuel before it exits the system, so in theory the filter should process all the material regardless of what it is. Either by breaking it up with DEF ,raising the temperature in filter and adding raw diesel fuel by way of the extra Injector. Which also should raise the rpms at idle. Driving at speed down the road is the best way to clean the system.
thanks so much for this video. getting my truck into the shop Monday. i have 19305 on my cover. ive been blowing though DEF and my oil is low after towing.....
Been having this same issue for some time. I have also been mysteriously losing coolant somewhere. it drank over a gallon of coolant in just over a month. I ended up replacing the coolant tank cap because it looks like it was leaking out from the threads in the cap. Haven't lost much since, but I wonder if it is also related. My DEF usage randomly spikes, especially on long trips to where I burned an entire tank of DEF in one 1200mile trip. Truck has also thrown a emissions insufficiency code several times now.
Tried to get mine fixed since the serial number falls in the recall and the glow plug, was turned away and told basically that they would only fix it if the engine light is on or the truck breaks down, really disappointed I’m gonna make some calls to gmc and see if it changes anything.
I have been since new at 10 percent life left but never checked it for consumption which is something I will do, also I don’t tow with it too much but it’s my road trip truck which we use on camping trips where we go off road and would hate to get stuck.
Shopping for a new truck, was looking at the tundra or a good ol ford, but none of them have the diesel, the Sierra and Silverado have grown on me, but if these types of issues require Tim from across the country to make this happen, I’m not sure if going diesel is worth it, is there a Tim on the pacific coast? I would buy a diesel from a Tim on this side of the coast today if it comes with this sort of customer service
