Excellent video presented with clarity and being of value to almost everyone. Given the cost of a tractor’s engine and hydraulics I am astonished owners stray from OE parts. It saves you next to nothing and introduces the potential for catastrophic damage. Just plain dumb. Thank you for doing this.

Plus aftermarket things like filters are usually built to fit multiple machines rather than just a specific machine.

The other risk with Amazon filters - the product/quality of an item you order from a listing today may not be the same as you get when you order that same item in six months or a year, and you won't know until you get them in your hands whether that seller has found new corners to cut. I ordered a highly-reviewed filter kit from there for an old riding mower - the fuel filters I got were just empty housings with no media whatsoever.

Thanks Messicks ! earlier this year I found a little Kubota A450 portable generator here in Arizona . It was built ib the 80"s and not very popular. It had sat for several decades. Upon getting running and looking good I found the fuel valve and the fuel gauge were done for ! I searched around and found Messicks shop in Penna and called bout the parts. They were very nice and helped on this old unit . The fuel valve was discontinued in the 90's , but he told me that ONE dealer in the US showed to have it . A obscure dealer in Northern Michigan showed it . Messicks had the fuel gauge and sent it to promptly , the dealer in Michigan did have the fuel valve . The dealer told me that valve had been on their shelf since 1998 ! He shipped it and now the little Kubota is in prime original condition . Thanks very much ! Scott

A couple of things to realize about filter bypass valves, and in particular, the lower spring pressure observed with the Amazon filters: The bypass valves are NOT a "go, no-go" valve; they can continuously and *partially* bypass as the filter restriction increases either due to contaminants or, and this is important, due to high viscosity oil conditions during cold operation. In other words, if you have a filter with a low pressure bypass spring (the Amazon filter in this case), as contaminants/particles build up in the filter, the filter may begin to partially and continuously bypass; during cold operation the same situation arises. So, in summary, go with the OEM so there is no doubt about the spring pressure.

The spring shown in the video is not the bypass. The bottom center of the filter cartridge should depress, so the bypass function is actually built into the cartridge and the spring he held in his hand was just a fitment spring suspending the cartridge in place so it has an oil reservoir on the outer jacket for incoming oil. On the WIX cartridge filters I tore apart, that's how they were all designed and you can see the Whip City Wrencher videos where he shows this numerous times for cartridge filters as I mentioned in a previous comment a few weeks ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vXybRKw_t0Q.html

Excellent video Neil. I believe that oem filters and fluids are the only way to go. Saving just a few bucks is not worth the chance of damaging my tractor because of inferior products. I will never use anything but oem on my Kubota MX5400. Thanks for another great video.

Messicks is a good place to do business with. Other dealers should take notice. I go with OEM for almost everything on my machines, it's not worth it. Besides, even if aftermarket is acceptable product, the problem is consistency. You may have a part that was good, but there is no guarantee that quality will remain the same in 6 months or years. Specily parts by third party, they could change material, manufacturing etc to cut costs.

A note to add about fuel filters. The proper filter is important. I’m a truck driver. I’ve seen the parts man give us the right filter, but the wrong micron size for that particular engine and have it plug constantly until the correct micron filter was used

Well done comparison! I would do the same when I was a GM District Manager to help my dealers understand the value and quality of the O.E. filter over what they were selling to customers with their maintenance services. Some were convinced to change, and a few were not. Also, I really appreciated your video on tractor sales volume and manufacturers potential ability to stay in business. Similar to RL Polk, your information dealt in actual sales data, potential profit (or lack there of) and what the eventual results may be. Not emotional, not brand loyal, just dealing in business facts. You had good points, well made to look out for the customers interests long term. I respect and applaud your approach to business.

I tried several non-oem filters for hydraulics and every one immediately started spraying oil. The OEM filter never dripped a drop.

I’m not sure if they still do it but Messicks used to offer free delivery within a 50 mile or so radius of their dealership. It came in really handy a couple of years back when I totalled out a belly mower blade. Their truck dropped off a new set the next day. That’s service!

I really appreciate Messicks. I’m in South Carolina and the two new holland dealerships close to me gave up their dealerships. I’m getting my parts etc and advise from them. I have five new holland tractors and really like them. A couple dealers within about four hours of me but they are not accommodating and don’t care because I didn’t buy the tractors from them. I have one that needs warranty work now but they put me off. I’m thinking of going to Messicks inPA and buy the next one next year. They really try and help and will find the answer if they don’t know it right away. Well trained and knowledgeable caring technicians. I don’t want to change brands but I’m not a new holland or bust guy.

It's all about peace of mind. Especially when and if you have some kind of engine "problem." All of the questions will come out if you don't use OEM parts. It is the same with Toyota, Ford, and Chevy. Great video!

If you use a utility knife to cut the filtering material from the metal ends, you could compare the square inches of material.

Very good video. I don't have a Kubota, I have a Massey, but I plan to buy my filters and fluids at my local dealer. They are also a Kubota dealer. I don't mind spending a little more to make sure my $20k tractor keeps running strong.

What's funny is that it's the same with John Deere. I get my John Deere OEM parts for cheaper than if I went to Amazon and bought generics for my setup. Plus, it's also worth mentioning that you don't risk voiding the warranty by using OEM parts changed at the recommended intervals. Shop local people it doesn't pay to save literally 3 to 10 bucks and risk damage to your $40,000 setup...

As a person that has company that services various brands of equipment ,the fluid and filter are part of the design of the hydraulic systems. Too many times I get a customer complaining about noisy or rough controls I usually find that some other company serviced it with Universal fluid. I don't make money on liquid gold but I do get happy customers ! The air filters are pretty universal as most filtration systems are made by Donaldson and used by multiple manufacturers . Engine oil ,just a quality filter and oil and keep it changed . A Deere oil filter for Yanmar is different than a Cub Cadet branded for the same Yanmar? I also do find Kubota to reasonable with there filter kits and the time it saves trying to cross reference and piece one together.

FWIW I run OEM filters in my GC1723eb, and OEM hydraulic fluid, both that I get from the local dealer (who is a very small business that’s located very close to me and part of that is that I REALLY want them to stay in business!) however I have switched to Shell Rotella T6 full-synthetic diesel oil as the OEM oil isn’t full-synthetic. Fluid quality is the number one contributor to engine and hydraulic system longevity, and I firmly believe that running the good stuff is an overall money saver in the long term.

If the Kubota is in warranty USE ONLY OEM filters to keep the warranty if something happens. Use quality oils as well.

Neil, great video like always. I have a thought for you to try, how about trying some other OEM manufacturers like John Deere, TYM, Kioti filters how they compared to Kubota filters. It would be interesting to see if those filters are high quality like Kubota filters.

Probably different spec to suit their individual machines - so whilst it may have a different bypass spring, or different filter capacity, that may be what the machine needs. I also think Neil stays away from comparison to green - there's no much mileage in it and a lot of people to offend. It's not really the point of his videos.

Amazon can be the wild, Wild West marketplace, no guarantee of quality. Not to mention that the pricing can often be much more than long established brands.

My first car had the old style where your replaced the filter element and kept re-using the housiing. You got to actually see the filter media when putting the ne filter in and the stuff it trapped wneh you took the filter out. Didn't have to cut the filter to see what was going on. I've never liked the filters with the media in a sealed can.

That's the old style and the style that is getting put back into production. No sense in wasting all that metal for each can on a highly replaced item.

People get really hung up on non-OEM filters and oils. I would not run the cheapest stuff I can find on amazon or at the store but in general, these are tractors and not high tolerance engines. I agree with running OEM fuel filters on the modern diesels since they are picky systems. The only other filter I would run oem is the paper type filters. Not common on tractors but it is on modern cars. I have always ran rotella oil in all my diesels with no issues. I picked up a Kubota X1100c with the common cracked transmission case(I can not believe Kubota did not do some sort of recall for it with how common it is), anyways, I put aftermarket filters and hydraulic fluid that crossed with the OEM after I fixed the transmission. Just kind of my own experiment to see if these will blow up like the internet claims from not running OEM.

performance of the RTV with semi-synthetic super UDT2 hydraulic fluid vs a generic is night and day. Its a lot less sluggish, especially when its cold. I doubt it would blow up, but the driving dynamics of that transmission are different. Its picky.

Filters are one of the highly debated internet discussions that refuse to die. The one takeaway from a filter debate is the cost of a filter has absolutely no relationship to its quality. You can't go wrong buying OEM filters but you are likely paying a lot more $$$s to satisfy the profit centers. My Kubota dealer laughs at the prices Kubota charges him for filters and luckily, he sells them to me for his cost. The problem a consumer has is not knowning the filtration level and minimum flow amount the engineers wanted for the specific filtering function. Based on this, and as often as filter change is required, I usually go with OEM filters. If I have to drift outside OEM branded filters, I'll go with a well-known and reputable brand like Wix, Fleetguard, Donaldson, etc.

Wix is Mann I believe now but I've been using wix for many years 30 years on my 18 hp kawasaki for my 320 john deere gasket failure tore it apart the bearings were pristine inside very clean.

For equipment or vehicles, I’ll never understand how people have no problem dropping $20,000+ dollars to purchase and then want to cut every corner on service and parts costs. Cheaping out on consumable parts like this makes almost no sense in the grand scheme of things…save like $10 upfront and possibly cause major damage. Then the savings are negated if you actually swap the cheap parts out more often than OEM timeframes

This is a problem with everything when trying to buy parts, doesn’t matter if it’s tractors, cars, boats, whatever. Knock off parts are everywhere, even at some dealerships so how is the consumer to know what is good??

I have to give Kubota credit for not going out of the way to hide who their supplier is for filtration. The most interesting filter manufacturer is champion labs makes Walmart super tech, luberfiner, acdelo, champion, champ and they own fram and it's still only making their own lol and wix makes OEM Agcos

I am not 100% confident, but I have been told Kubota owns their own factory in China that does some of the filters. I would like better confirmation of that.

05:42 is that spring pressure relief or is there a mechanism built into the center of the bottom of the pleated filter canister to provide pressure relief? I cut open a few filters a while back and crossed what I discovered with a few Whip City Wrencher videos and came to the conclusion that if you have a simple spring or a pure metal leaf, all it's doing is keeping the filter seated in the housing. The pressure relief function is happening in the filter canister. Maybe it's not like that with the Kubota filters, but it's that way with the Wix 51360 I cut open and also with the Bosch 3311. Fun Fact, John Deere X500 series oil filters are identical to Mobil 1 for Toyota Camry Hybrids. They come from the exact same assembly line. Does Kubota have a full filter kit for the L4060 series? Does it save any money?

Everyone gets all bent out of shape about ,"oh I only use OEM...." But the reality is, Kubota doesn't make filters and or oil fluids, they just slap their name on a filter or oil jug to make everyone pay top dollar, it's called OEM brain washing..... So what I want to know is, who is making Kubota filters and oil, Kioti filters, JD filters, New Holland filers and or all oil....... Lets find that answer.............

The answer is that in most cases it's Donaldson or fleetguard... But in the cases I know of the OEM is cheaper anyway.

Not even remotely worth the risk. Plus we don't know the micron rating of these, regardless of how often you change them, a filter with a higher rating will not protect you machine as well as one with the correct rating.
