Yes. Helen started painting very young. She began teaching in her 20s I believe. Full of knowledge that's too important to be lost to time. Keep watching as we continue to remaster and post her lessons for all to enjoy.
Helen's lessons have a special way of revealing something new each time you watch, whether it's a fresh insight, a helpful tip, or a deeper understanding of her techniques. Thanks for posting and for your support.
A comprehensive video with so much pasión and fun as well with so much valuable information and content. Thank you so very much for all people making this able for us taking this journey of art. God bless you
This is exactly what Helen teaches. She emphasizes learning the basic principles and understanding the reasons behind painting each element of a work. She stresses that these basics can be applied to any subject matter. Thanks for posting and for your insightful comments. It's appreciated.
Just love Helen. She was so willing to give her information to everyone for free. Unlike the artists today, which will charge you probably $250 for the video we have just watched here. I have taken notes on every video I’ve ever seen that Helen has made. It is a gold mind of information. But you have to practice it as well as understand it. Thank you for leaving such a mark in this world Helen. I wish you were still here. But in the way, you will never be gone.
Helen is surely deserving of your heartfelt words. Thank you very much for posting. In her lessons, Helen often encourages, motivates, and inspires her students using an approach likened to a motivational or inspirational speaker. She aims to uplift and encourage her students to take positive actions and overcome challenges in painting. Thanks for supporting the channel, it's appreciated.
Lots of excellent tips in this video as expected. Not the usual style lesson we are used to seeing on this channel but it's the same wonderful Helen. Thanks for this one. ❤ it.
Thank you. I learned so much! Finally a teacher that explains as she goes so the beginner can understand what’s going on. When someone just demonstrates, the brush is moving so fast it’s hard to see and understand the movement of the brush. Can’t thank you enough for this.
A few might say she talks too much, but I'm with you. Helen's commentary is, I think, what drives artists to come back for more. Thanks for the comment and support. It's appreciated.
i have looked through thousands of painting videos, but i must admit: this was different, in best of ways. Good logical structure, well-paced, dynamical and inspiring. and the best part: really helpful too. thanks!
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful feedback. Helen's work can have significant impact, she was an accomplished artist and teacher. Your comments are appreciated. Thank you for watching and supporting the channel. It's really appreciated.
Thank you for your kind words. Although Helen passed away many years ago, she continues to live on through these lessons. Helen inspired and motivated countless artists to become better painters, no matter what subject matter they were interested in painting. Her teachings still bring that same hope and encouragement to artists today. Thanks for posting your thoughts...it is very much appreciated.
Sad to say, Helen passed away in 1994, but she remains a fantastic artist and teacher through her timeless videos. It's a pleasure to share her lessons, ensuring her wisdom, knowledge and teaching style continue to inspire artists everywhere. Thanks very much for posting and hope you enjoy Helen's other lessons.
Sounds like you're captivated by Helen's unique presence and teaching style. You're not alone. If by "fragile" you mean how lightly she holds her brush, you're right. She does hold it very lightly and has even dropped it at times because of that. Thanks for posting, it's appreciated.

Great to hear you discovered Helen. She was a talented artist and teacher. This lesson is a bit different from her other lessons, but you'll get a feel for her teaching style as you explore more. Helen focused on teaching fundamental principles. Check out these two shorts for a good preview of her approach to teaching: ru-vid.commSB0vgPYsOQ?si=cDbBmwS_GLHIu52L ru-vid.comj91GLPCttrQ?si=77LqLCXuvp_d9vpS One is 30 seconds, the one 60 seconds. I'm glad you enjoyed this lesson, although, Helen passed away many years ago. Her legacy lives on through her oil painting lessons. She was an accomplished artist, author, and teacher whose passion for painting continues to inspire artists today. Thank you very much for posting and for appreciating her work. I hope you find more inspiration in her other lessons.
@@HelenVanWyk I had no idea she had passed, although I did notice how dated the videos are: so wonderful that you are sharing her teachings. Thank you.
This was an excellent tutorial, I wish to get back into oil painting after nearly 20 years and I have forgotten all I knew ( self taught) and have been struggling with making a start- some problems have been external like not having a dedicated space so had to always pack everything away 😩 financial strain which makes you think frugaly and materials are costly etc and of course the internal battle to just put brush to canvas- I need to learn so much - like how to make a landscape recede - and the colours to mix to do that , which brush does what etc- you get the idea- thanks a lot for this tutorial, brilliant 👍👍👍
Really nice to hear you're wanting to return to oil painting after being away from it for so long. It sounds like you've faced some challenges, but admirable that you're ready to dive back in. I'd suggest reviewing the recent lesson "Double Critique" because Helen critiques a landscape and talks about how to separate far and near objects. That might help you get started on your landscape painting. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xfM9wV1G_PU.htmlsi=L4g0p0r_1sunZHjT Happy painting and thanks for posting your experiences. It is appreciated.
That’s precisely what Helen mentions in one of her earlier lessons. You can listen to it here: ru-vid.comc5mEmDySBqo?t=30 It’s great that you’ve identified one of Helen’s key teaching methods. All the best for continued learning and improving your skills.
Since you asked for comments, I liked the practical boom boom boom content of this video. Just give me the rules. I can get philosophical on my own later. And even if I do not want my own paintings, once I learn to paint, to match Helen's, I can Make a lot of progress by learning exactly how she does her style. Thanks for posting this, and for the extended description, nice outline, and the transcript!
Thank you for posting. This lesson does takes a different approach from Helen’s usual lessons. I’m glad you found it helpful. Thanks for your support and for sharing your thoughts. It's appreciated.
Great story, made me smile. Well, if you're not an artist maybe it's fate you happened upon Helen's lessons. Might be time to learn oil painting. Helen’s techniques might not help with brushing your teeth, but they’re certainly valuable for painting. Thanks for sharing your reaction.
