What about 2 inch brushes and 1 inch brushes? Bob ross always talks about them.
@MichaelhodgkinsArtist
@MichaelhodgkinsArtist 4 года назад
The video is about basic requirements for landscape paintings. Larger brushes such as these are out of that scope. Also the techniques demonstrated by Bob Ross are basically those of the Chinese factory painters who churn out the same invented banal images over and over again in virtual assembly lines. I don't consider this to be landscape painting in the true sense.

A very useful video. Thanks a lot! Is it okay to use acrylic painting brushes to paint oil painting instead? oil painting brushes seem to lose its shape more than acrylic painting brushes

welp when i buy cheap brushes i always forget to wash them after painting and the next month i paint its like a god damn rock
@shainemoodley

I placed my forgotten brushes in hot vinegar; overnight; and this softened the paint. I then easily cleaned them with turpentine. Its a schlepp but it is cheaper than buying new brushes.

What are the best brands, series of oil paint brushes for 1 Landscape, 2 Layers?3 Alla prima? 4 Plein air? 5 lots of detail? ?? Great video! Thanks
@MichaelhodgkinsArtist
@MichaelhodgkinsArtist 7 лет назад
There are different brands available in different places all over the world. What I can get in Australia is probably only a fraction of what is available in the UK or USA for example so making specific recommendations is a little difficult. I have made some recommendations from experience on my website but these are only with brushes I can get locally. Try different brands that are available to you. I work in pairs, two of each size. Often I will have a different brand for each one. After a while you find yourself favouring one over the other.

I purchased natural hog for oil painting but, now I am exploring acrylics and thinking I should have a separate group of brushes for each medium use. Are you comfortable to comment if synthetic hog brushes would be better used for Acrylic Painting vs natural hog brushes? I am considering synthetic hog would hold their shape longer.
@MichaelhodgkinsArtist
@MichaelhodgkinsArtist 6 лет назад
Canuklhead There are excellent synthetic brushes in ranges made specifically for acrylic painting and yes, they do hold their shape well. They are generally softer than hog but there are firm ones as well. These brushes are good for more controlled paint application and handle quite differently to hog bristle. They work well with oils too but in my experience, can't substitute for the brute force and scrubbing power available from a hog bright. The synthetic flats move paint around beautifully and I am using them more and more with oils for controlled application in smaller passages. Having a separate range of brushes for acrylics is a good idea as you need to keep them wet and hog bristle is damaged by constant immersion in water.

What about dagger brushes?
@MichaelhodgkinsArtist
@MichaelhodgkinsArtist 4 года назад
Thanks for the question. It's a good point. Dagger brushes are something that can be experimented with or adopted as part of the painting method. However, the video is basic advice about traditional brushes that are generally used by landscape artists as advice for beginners so not really relevant. There are also many other specially constructed brushes that create certain marks for different effects but these are for more advanced users to experiment with. Also, the marks created with daggers can be achieved with small filberts, size 1 or smaller soft bristle rounds or riggers so I don't personally see the need.

Yes, absolutely. No difference between seascape and landscape as far as materials are concerned.

doesn't killing an an animal for art bother you?
@MichaelhodgkinsArtist
@MichaelhodgkinsArtist 7 лет назад
Hi. I'm not aware of any animals that get killed for art. If an animal is farmed for meat then it is a pity not to use every last bit of it.
@agiusbennett
@agiusbennett 7 лет назад
I have always been concerned with the animal treatment of getting the hair. You said you weren't aware. Do you know how we can find out? I know pigs are used for meat, but what about the weasel? I paint mostly animals with landscapes and such, and wish to only use the brushes that were not created like furs. Thank you for you very educational video! I hope to find your next one you mentioned at the end of the video.
@MichaelhodgkinsArtist
@MichaelhodgkinsArtist 7 лет назад
Dorothy Agius I've looked in to this a little more and found that the Weasels are regarded as a pest/vermin and would be trapped and killed anyway. The "Kolinsky" type sable is a product of the fur trade. The animals are farmed for pelts to make fur products like coats, bags etc. and the brush fur is a sub-product of that. These fur hairs are also used in makeup brushes.

@@MichaelhodgkinsArtist Then please don't! 😭 We should all look for alternatives! What if it was dog hair, would you still pluck out from a doggy? We'll what's the difference between how the dog and pig would suffer!? How can artists (people who feel more than anyone else) contribute to such suffering UNNECESSARILY!?

@@MichaelhodgkinsArtist When we feel terrible about something, it is because it's wrong and that feeling guides us to stoping the action..... we should stop treating animals like commodities, they are beautiful individuals....😭💚✊🐷
