Hello again viewers! Happy Tuesday! We are here once again for an oil painting tutorial. Let us set the scene with a beautiful place in mind. Ever seen the Goonies? This wonderful and magical place is up in Astoria, Oregon, and I thought we would paint a little scene against the water with a sunset.
Today, I found myself running out of steam, but I managed to pull it together and finish the painting. I hope you enjoy watching me struggle once again as we paint this wet on wet oil painting. We will work on a fun wave variety, and play with colors.
My pallet for this painting:
Titanium White
Yellow Ochre
Indain Yellow
Bright Red
Alizarin Crimson
Sap Green
Phthalo Green
Prussian Blue
Dark Sienna
Midnight Black

Great job! I'm a huge Bob Ross fan and your site popped up a week or so ago. I've watched a few of your tutorials now. This one is my favorite so far. It's different to watch you take a couple of hours on RU-vid to complete a painting compared to Bob, who only had about 26 minutes on public tv. Clearly, he could've taken his time had RU-vid been around 30 plus years ago.

Thank you for another fantastic painting! I'm wondering if you can possibly explain the differences in the brown colors that you use in your paintings (e.g. Van Dyke Brown, Dark Sienna, and the one that is created by mixing Alizarin Crimson and Sap Green).

Yes! I'm thinking I can do a short to better explain it but for me it's about temperature and hue. Temperature - is the color a warm color or a cool color? Van dyke brown tends to be a cooler color. It can be used to add beautiful cool tones - I like to use it for rocks and trees because it's that deep brown almost grey black that is present on trees and the undergrowth of a forest. When you mix it with titanium white, you are left with a wonderful brownish grey, it's just fantastic for rocks, mountains, and even clouds. Dark Sienna is a warmer color. Especially if you add a touch of bright red, which I do often. You can use can use dark Sienna to add warm pops in the sky or dimension in clouds. You can also add dimension to your other browns or warm up your van dyke a little. I like to add dark Sienna to blues to dull them slightly for a sky sometimes too which is fun. I use dark Sienna with white for highlights but I most often add bright red to it for more pop. Alizarin crimson on its own is a deep yet translucent reddish blue. Some may even say it can have purple ish hues. This color is one of my favorites to work with, I love it! You can use this color on its own for deep rich shadows and add it to any of the brown to get some richness. Sap green however is actually a warmer green and complimentary to crimson. When they mix, they desaturate each other and can create an array of browns and rich burgundy. 50/50 mix will get you a brownish black. You can paint an entire painting with these two colors plus titanium white. I like to use this burgundy color for skies, they are just spectacular. I almost always flavor my color to the crimson side but you can mix it however you want. If you use it in the sky, add harmony to the painting by using it in more places. Say the shadows, tree branches, and undergrowth of a forest. This color also works magically in autumn scenes. Thanks for the question and I hope this is a start to explaining the colors more for you. I'll try to create something that's more visual soon!
