I watched your video several times before I attempted the gasket replacement on my 1956 Mercury Montclair. It helped a lot but I have several other thoughts. 1. Where you had a standard transmission, I had an automatic with the two transmission lines to the radiator. One took two 90 degree turns to connect to the radiator, creating conflict with removing the pan easily. Being a 3/8" steel tube line, it did not want to bend out of the way for removal. I simply cut the line where they ran parallel to the block and installed a flared fitting splice. That removed the conflict and made for easier work if needed on the future. 2. I removed the sway bar to eliminate the conflict. It was only a few bolts and well worth the effort. 3. Instead of putting sealer on the oil pickup tube nut, I added the sealer to the threads on the tube as I was poking it thru the side of the pan. That made installation of the now clean nut easier. 4. Your demo was not clear on whether or not you sprayed the copper sealant on the under side of the block. Both sides of the gasket and to the edge of the pan was clear.. These are my comments, thank you for the video to get me started. Richard

Hello there, just came across your vids & threw you a Sub. I'm gearing up to do a Y Block in my '58 (not a resto by any means) and will definitely be referring you & your channel in my own. Good work both in content & video/audio.

Found your video to be very detailed and helpful. Can you please tell me if the main bearing caps for the 239 and 272 Y-blocks are marked "EBU" like the 292 Y-block is? Thank you.

I have opened up quite a few Y blocks over the years. 95% of them have their main caps marked with either EBU or ECZ (EBU for 239, 256, 272, and 292 and ECZ for 312 only). There was a few rare occasions when a Y Block did not have the main caps stamped and these were always 239-292, never a 312. Technically, that EBU designation began with the 239 Y Block - there was a block cast with that designation as well.

I'm planning on rebuilding a 1955 Ford 272 yblock to put in my 1956 Ford Customline, which has a Chevy engine (which I can't stand). Do you think the 272 would be a dependible engine for daily driving. Look forward to your thoughts.

Back in the early 90s, the 272 in my 55 was very reliable. My dad ran a 272 (the 57 model with the ECZ-G heads) in a 1956 F100 and would run to Washington DC and back up and down I95 about 1 hour each way. Your issue may be finding 272 pistons - they are harder to find and usually more expensive. If you bore your block to standard 292 size you will find pistons much cheaper.
