A viewer asked why aren't the oil pumps in turbine engines just routinely replaced after a specified interval of running. For a variety of reasons, things in the aviation world are a bit different from the way cars are maintained.

yep, aviation is a unique business! Long ago, I was part of an engineering team that designed a piece of avionics for the C-17. I'd guess about 10 man-years of effort for the design. Qualification testing was added on, and then there's the separate issue of manufacturing it. I think the total production was about 400 units. That's not many pieces to share all of that expense! While that design has been replaced with updated versions, I'm still quite pleased to have played a small part in an aircraft that has been so useful.

In aviation things get crazy expensive because they are produced in small numbers because they are crazy expensive...
@SkyhawkSteve
@SkyhawkSteve 2 месяца назад
@@crono331 I'll add that when I was doing it, the standing joke was that we had to deliver 100 pounds of documentation for every pound of hardware. Working for the gov't isn't easy. OTOH, I did some work for satellites later, and the production quantities are even smaller and the documentation was greater. Very, very expensive!

With a connection to the material handler at a local defense contractor, getting 'scrap value' mechanical parts is exceptionally rare. I've tried for years. Problem being that most of these components are tied to a military contract, which automatically go to a scrap recycling facility in sealed containers. They also have commercial craft parts, but as Jay stated, they will rebuild them to the end of time until they no long meet flight status or the parts become unavailable, at which point, into the scrap bin. The better outlets I've dealt with operate overhaul programs (3rd party) at or around airfields, airports, and once in a great while, an air museum will part with something they can't get or make parts for anymore. There's a few places that will sell to the public via aircraft salvage, usually very cheap at material cost plus shipping, but it's a given that the part you're getting will need Serious repairs for even ground use and may just be a desk trinket in the end.

Very interesting, I've never seen a pump like that. It looks like it's doing with 4 gears what would normally be done with 6 gears in three separate pumps. Each inlet feeds 2 outlets and vice a versa so the layout is really only useful for scavenging since the outlets are all combined anyway. Thanks!

Often automotive pumps last a really long time and don’t really need changed. But, they’re so cheap it isn’t worth the cost of inspection and testing. Low pressure oil pumps in general last pretty well. They’re not really under a large stress and are pumping lubricant.

HI Jay, Lovely video. I have the privilege of working in the "oil team" of a big name aerospace company. Your videos are always a treat when trying to understand components outside of just looking at 1D system diagrams. When in this video you talk about the "happy cycle" of the oil, you've skipped a component that I would love you to make a separate video on, the breather or sometimes called air oil separator. I know that different engines have different architectures but I would love if you could share your own expirience with this component! how does it work and look like? is it always necessary? is it always standalone or can it be imbedded into the oil tank? Thanks!

Is there anything you do replace with non-oem parts? Say generic hardware, screws, bolts, washers, maybe gaskets and o-rings? I assume with industrial engines that willl forever sit bolted to the ground you have some wiggle room

The only thing I would replace on a flight engine with a non-stock part might be a washer. I would replace a factory stainless steel washer with a same-sized stainless steel washer in good condition, of unknown origin. But only on the exterior of the engine. Otherwise, no substitutions.

@@AgentJayZ ok, this is kinda hard to convey but I’ll try. Jet turbine engines make big horsepower but they need to be kept in there sweet zone to make it, like rpm range and non fluctuations in load ? For example, what would happen if you were to put say a 3000 hp turbo shaft in a dozer application (not the right application, I know) and apply various loads and almost down to stalling point ? The power turbine would slow down to much and cause like a restriction and probably melt yes ? Basically what I am asking I guess is what happens if you apply big loads (braking force) to a jet turbine ? Like a diesel motor will keep trying and making power right up to the point it stalls out, and do it regularly without harm to the engine. What happens to jet turbines, turbo shaft engines if the are over taxed to stalling point ?
@AgentJayZ
@AgentJayZ 2 месяца назад
Depends on what type. For mechanical loads like heavy machinery, you need what's called a free power turbine engine, like in the Abrams tank. Two systems. The gas generator can be screaming along at 100% ( 1500 Hp in the Abrams), but it is only providing a gas stream to drive the power turbine, which feels all the torque right down to zero rpm. A 1500 Hp diesel engine will stop turning when attempting to turn a 2000 hp load. A 1500 Hp free power turbine engine will not be able to move the 2000 Hp load, but the gas generator will be tapped out at 100% rpm. Have a look at my video called Power Turbines and what they do.

@@michaelchippindall4811 If a typical LP turbine in a big turbofan engine has been adapted to be a free power turbine for an industrial or marine engine (eg, as in R-R's MT30) then it might not survive being stalled. The blades might get bent by the increased aerodynamic load. However, where a power turbine has been specifically designed to more 'industrial' standards (eg, as in the power turbines designed for the Industrial Olympus), then the blading may have been designed to take the full power, zero rpm stall torque. That torque may be as much as three times the torque at the design rpm, if not more.
