To explain what you are seeing, the video starts with them taking two pieces of drilling pipe apart. The one above is the male threaded part and the bottom is the female part of the joint. The top one is not a part that goes into the ground though. It is part of the drilling rug and is the part that powers the spinning of the pipes below as well as supplies the fluid to flush out what has been drilled out. So to put in another section of pipe they have to first disconnect the pipe from the rig, attach the rig to a new piece of pipe, and (off screen to the right) then lift that pipe up as high as it is long, then attach that new section (the one coming from above) to the one already in the ground. Thats why he is using a dauber to apply thread lubricant to the end. The big clamps are used to lift the pipe, and the chains are there to tighten the threaded fitting. When you wrap something like a rope or chain around something you can hold a lot of force to twist the pipes together with just your hands. The more wraps of chain around the pipe the less he has to pull to get the joint tight. It is a force mulitplier in effect. They don't do this every minute of the day, but when they have drilled the length of a section of pipe, 40 feet is pretty standard if I'm not mistaken. So it depends on what they are drilling through as to how often they need to add a section. You can blow through sand but rock takes a lot longer. Knowing that they are cousins and have obviously worked together before makes their coordinated 'ballet' even more elegant to me. I can appreciate the little verbal checks they have developed. I don't think that it is as super-safe as office jobs where carpel tunnel syndrome and paper cuts are the big risk factors, but although mistakes could lead to dismemberment and death, they are aware of all the pieces and are not taking any unnecessary risks that I could see. They are working quickly and effectively because every minute of time they are changing over to a new section is another minute that they are not drilling, and THAT is what they are getting paid for... I like the kick to the pipe to get the parts seated togethet. Faster and WAY safer than using your hands or shoulder.

The guy with the chain is your "thrower" he "throws chain." The other guy is your "wrench man," he "wrenches rods." Rods are pipe sections. Your thrower is gonna be thinner, with corded muscle and fast reflexes. He handles all the smaller, fast moving metal. Your wrench man is gonna be bigger, with forearms like Popeye. He handles the big clamps, the collars, maneuvering the free swinging rods, and the heavy lifting. These are only two of several flavors of monster you can find on a drilling rig. Do not fuck with these men. The thrower will jack you up like a boxer. The wrench man will twist your limbs into shattered wrecks in an instant. In this case it actually looks like two throwers. You can see that they're both throwing at times and they're both wrenching the rods... In fact, they clearly need each other's help to manage the rods because neither is a wrench man. I know. I grew up on a farm and wrenched rods from 18 years old to 25... When I became a mercenary. I'm too old and crippled for it now, but sometimes I miss the rigs.

Drilling is no joke and I reccomend to stay away from rig drilling if you feel you're not capable of handling situations with deep focus and care, there are many ways to fuck up and it's not always the fuck ups that you can easily recover from, one careless move could kill you or other workers around you that's why keep in mind it's the real world out there and messing up won't be taken lightly that's why you either learn how to do shit right quick or you're shit out of luck. Drilling will push you past your limits and there will be days that it'll fucking hurt but I personally love the grind and with time things become natural and you realize one day, holy shit! All that pain was fucking worth it! My family eats healthy I work for what I have and I do it right too! It is not for the weak minded, but I feel if a lot of people out there got off there ass they'd be surprised what they're capable of! I think it's fun man nothing compares to a beer after a long day of trippin pipe!

@@lanewebb1328 , The same falls true with Poured walls, I carried forms back in Columbia, Missouri, in the late 70s, they weigh 85 pounds each, at 2 feet by four feet, you carry one starting out but there are guys who built up to 2 on each shoulder. When you try walking up and down the hills made of that red clay, it gets slippery, you wind up with sore spots you didn't know you had.
