Grabbing the power pellet greatly slows down the enemies for a while. You want to dash for it early and then clear out the pellets on the lowest rows while everything is so slow, or they will never give you another chance to do it.

I realized later that I was using the power pellets wrong... It's been awhile since I last played this! :-)
