Hello friends, welcome back to my channel.
Today I share the key differences between oil sticks and oil pastels. Knowing your art supplies is a key component of mastering your art skills. My Oil pastels are not very good quality but even so, I'm not a fan of oil pastels. I've fallen in love with oil sticks. What do you prefer? Oil sticks or oil pastels?

This was extremely useful to watch and listen. I've been thinking about using oil sticks for a piece I'm working on, and this video has greatly helped! thank you :)

Hi Selinia, I find that the oil pastels do set I've got paintings I've done a while ago and not sealed and I can run my hand over it, there is no residue on my hand, of course it is always best to seal it to protect it from the environment, which I normally do it a week after I've finished the painting, I use about 3-4 coats of krylon spray varnish and it brings them up beautifully or you can use the senelier brand but thats out of my budget range. The other thing I wanted to say is you can blend them, some are harder than others like pentel or even stabilo are very hard. I like to use mungyo, monte marte, micador, they all can come in different hardness and can be blended easily I generally use a cotton bud. The draw back I guess is not all of them can be bought as singles, but I do get wonderful results that are quite luminous with my paintings. I don't have any sennelier but I know they are the creme de la creme, they also have oil pastels and they are likened to using lipstick, however, they're way out of my price range. You can also use the usual oil paint mediums with oil pastels as well as other mediums like baby oil and walnut oil etc. I too don't like Picasso, and believe he wasn't very nice. I think that oil and dry pastels have a lot of wrong information about them consequently there isn't as many people out there doing videos about them, there are a few but not many, look up blackbean, he's a character! The lady who is Monet Cafe uses them a bit but she uses mostly dry pastel she's very good at sharing information and runs online courses, like wise does Nolan from the paint basket. And once again thank you for sharing, I enjoy your videos. Cheers!

My oil sticks only take 1-2 days to dry. Just like the skin on the sticks. I use shiva exclusively. Eventually you learn to keep your hands clean and I even can do details with them. Great review.

I think you might have the non-artist grade of oil pastels from mungyo. Their artist gallery version is so much better. My favs are-1. Sennelier 2. Carandache 3.Mungyo(artists’ grade). Loving your videos ❤

I think I would cry every time I had to peel them because of the cost😂 The new Paul Rubens Haiya oil pastels are super soft, very much like the Sennelier oil pastels IMO
@selinawilsonart
@selinawilsonart 7 месяцев назад
Good to know. Yes there is waste. If you use them regularly they have less time to dry. I’ve been looking a lot at R & F products lately and their oil sticks seem to stay more moist and have less to peel, maybe. Not sure of cost comparison though

Sennelier oil pastels are very blendable...and its immediate, spontaneous, and no mixing, mediums, or palette, or solvents like oil paintings, although you can go back in and touch things up with a brush and oils.

You can also use canvas pads if you want a book format. I use my oil pastels a lot. The Little Brain paint sticks are a cheap way to test out if you want to try a similar media to oil sticks.

Overwhelmingly I’m hearing people love their oil pastels and that’s wonderful! My main point I was making is that oil sticks dry and oil pastels do not 🙂🌻

I don’t feel it’s fair to compare these two products because they are both sticks. I used Sennilier oil pastels for several paintings now and they are absolutely beautiful to use. Very easy to blend and mix. The oil sticks from my research should be treated like you are painting with oil paint. My oil sticks have just arrived in the mail today so I’ll have an opinion on them soon enough. Please try Sennilier oil pastels! 😊

Thanks for the video! It is really informative. So sad to see that you're obviously missing out on the fun oil pastels can be because of the brand you have. There are good and creamy but also affordable brands like Paul Rubens, esp. the new Haiya sets, they're really creamy. I'm in love with them. But also the mungyo gallery artist's soft oil pastels. Perhaps give them a try?

Thank you so much for a lovely and informative video!!! Also... you have such a beautiful voice (so calming)! So I have a request... can you please share why someone would use oil sticks to enhance their work (and not just keep using oil paint)? What would be the advantage?
@selinawilsonart
@selinawilsonart 7 месяцев назад
Oh thank you ☺️ Oil sticks give the opportunity to “draw” with oil paint. They offer a different texture than using a brush. They can also be used without the need of solvents (turpentine etc) or oils (linseed oil etc) so a little more user friendly and ready at hand to create! 🩵🌻😀

Can I make water color sticks as well, like we did for the oil. I like the way mine turned out, I did find a recipe using half and half oil to wax... I had t tried that. Yours I made two different batches of oil paint white and a black then made the stick, I poured into chap stick tubes. Like them a lot. The white is a bit firmer with the same mix. Thanks for the help!

Ali Express has them for 1.97 each and 2 dollars shipping though it takes awhile to get them 1 month or less but had only two items take two months. I hope to find the video of the watercolor or pastel stick so far I love the batch I made of off white and black yesterday today I made blue

@selinawilsonart

Arches cold pressed 100% cotton oil pad. You can use any paper designed for oil paint or the oil will leach out and leave an oil stain. Alternatively you can cover any paper with gesso to prime it to avoid stains 😀🌸💕

Thank you so much for this video. Perhaps you could help me by answering this: Can they be use together? I only use oil pastels, but I saw a particular color in an oil stick that I really, really want! But is not like I want to start using oil sticks! I just want that one color, so.... can I buy it and use it with my oil pastels?!
@selinawilsonart
@selinawilsonart Год назад
You’re welcome! I completely understand about falling in love with a colour 😀 unfortunately due to the fact that oil pastel never dries it’s not stable enough to use oil stick over the top. It can be used underneath, and once dry oil pastels can be applied over the top. Note you will also need to prep your paper or canvas for oil sticks to stop the oil bleeding into the substrate or use a designated oil paper. Wish I could say yes I want you to have that new colour! 😃💖🌸🌻🌺

Excusing me madame, but your are comparing bad oil pastel brands with oil sticks Sennelier! You should comparing Sennelier oil pastel vs Sennelier oil sticks! I do understand the difference between each of them, but Sennelier oil pastel will stay oily and buttery as your Sennelier oil sticks rich we are using mostly on big support for abstract art mostly meanwhile oil pastel can be use on A4 support for doing small portraits as fine arts! All others oil pastels brands are not having good quality as being buttery and creamy except Mungyo soft oil pastel from Korea and others from Chinese selection such as Haiya from Paul Ruben and Hashi! From Quebec in Canada 🇨🇦 😊❤

I say exactly that in the video. 😀 My point was one dries and the other doesn’t and because of that I have a preference and don’t like oil pastels in any brand. Of course some love them and that’s great. I’m all about finding what you love to use and create and have fun 😀🌈💖
