An oil lampada in an icon corner creates a great aesthetic for prayer. They're easy to set up and maintain, as I demonstrate in this video.
SUPPLIES
Lamps, wicks, and wick holders can be purchased from the Holy Cross Monastery in Wayne, WV: www.holycross.org/collections...
Correction: the wick holder I called “Old Believer” is actually called “Old Rite.”

FURTHER INFORMATION
Regular vs. EVOO: There are various opinions about “regular” vs. extra virgin. I have updated this section a couple of times because my luck changes with various brands over the years. A brand will work really well for a year or two, and then something changes with their supplier(s) or manufacturing, and it doesn't work well anymore. I'm presently using Sam's Club Member's Mark regular olive oil. I used to use only EVOO, but it seems EVOO is thicker. With the wicks being thicker than they used to be, oil is not able to rise through the wick opening in the holder very well.
HOW LONG?
How long a lamp burns between maintenance trimmings varies significantly depending on the quality of the wicks and oil used. If you follow my directions above, expect to trim your lamp every 8-24 hours depending on wick thickness and oil quality.

I hope this is an ongoing RU-vid channel. I'm a 29 year old Protestant who is going to convert to Orthodoxy soon. I found the Orthodox Church in September and am a Catechumen awaiting my Chrismation. We need more English-Speaking content on RU-vid since that is where I as a young adult go to for much of my information if I am curious about a topic. Blessings.

Thank you for your feedback, Mathias. You echo what others have told me about the need for more Orthodox content on RU-vid. I need to get over my discomfort with making videos and do some more; it's an important means of communication nowadays.

Thank you for an instructive video. I have always wondered how to do this properly. I guess I am a bit of a thick-o, but I had no idea olive oil could burn through a wick like that. 😄

I have been using crude olive oil (not virgin), and using a small weight attached to one end of the wick to keep the wick straight while embedded in the oil (no holders, just "swimming" inside the oil), and then burning it. This setup in my case lasts 12h with the amount of oil it holds, and requires no maintenance, only when refilling.

Try to use the floaters. they are much better and less messy.
@OrthodoxRoad
@OrthodoxRoad 4 года назад
I'm glad floaters are working for you! They are another method but I haven't personally found them to work better or worse. Each system has its pros and cons.
@seanmcgabriel207
@seanmcgabriel207 4 года назад
Floaters are not trouble free either, extracting them from the oil and replacing /trimming wicks on them can be messy.. But I think there's no 'non messy' way of dealing with icon lamps, it's all part of the devotion ie doing it carefully and ensuring oil has not spattered the Icon corner surfaces be it table or niche.

Helpful.... the cork float wick holders are a an alternative too, usually coming with little wicks in the bag..Would you recommend your style of wick holder over the one you described in your video?
@OrthodoxRoad
@OrthodoxRoad 4 года назад
I've never used the cork style so I can't recommend it (not because it's not good but because I have no experience with it). What might make the most sense for you is to use whichever style is more readily available to you from wherever you buy your supplies.
@Yallquietendown
@Yallquietendown 3 года назад
Ive used Both kinds and both work great. If you use cork I think it’s best to put a layer of water first before adding oil so that - if it’s left lit - when the cork goes down it will extinguish when it hits the water layer

Question - is there any way to keep a Vigil Lamp lit for 2 or 3 days straight without having to pull the wick higher or cut it?
@OrthodoxRoad
@OrthodoxRoad 2 года назад
I've had that happen before when the wick and oil type matched perfectly. Usually, the wick needs to be trimmed once or twice a day. If you want something that will burn for several days without any maintenance, then I would suggest candles. Root Candles makes a "cemetery candle" that will burn for seven days straight. They're presently $65 for a box of twelve, so they're not cheap. It's what we use on our altar at church to keep a flame burning continuously before the reserved sacrament.

Not sure if you are going to answer this but do you leave it on all the time or just one specific day?
@gagac007
@gagac007 Год назад
If you can you can leave it all day. This of course if you're at home all day,but if you're going out it better to blow out the lite, we don't want something unpredictable to happen. As for days when you want to lighe oil lamp (Vigil lamp) it best to do it on Feast days (red marked in church calendar) and on Sunday. Before you light it, you say a little prayer, mention the Saint (Patron) of your house, than Jesus, Saint Mary, or if you don't have Patron just mention Jesus, Saint Mary, other saints... saying prayers.

Can I ask you a question? The wick on my Lampada burns out within half a minute. I let the wick soak for 30mins and did everything you shown us. I am using a Old Rite wick holdering, same wicks as in your video and walmart brand extra virgin olive oil.
@OrthodoxRoad
@OrthodoxRoad Год назад
I'm so sorry you're having troubles. How loose is the wick in the holder? Does it slide up and down super easily? It should be loose enough that it almost falls through with gravity. If it's even a little tight, you may need to remove some strands from it to make it thinner. I have to do that with all my wicks these days. Also, try some regular olive oil (not extra virgin). The regular is thinner and does better with the thicker wicks that are sold nowadays.

After a while, does burning the oil make the room sticky like in a kitchen after cooking with oil a lot?
@OrthodoxRoad
@OrthodoxRoad Год назад
I've never had that happen. Though I did notice that after about seven years there was a spot on the ceiling directly above where I had the vigil lampada hanging. The spot seemed to be from soot and heat and not oil.

How do you use the wax wicks?
@OrthodoxRoad
@OrthodoxRoad 4 года назад
Good question. I had someone give a pack of those to me when I first started burning but never bothered using them since the cotton wicks work so well and are more affordable. You could try sticking them in a wick holder and see if it works.

@@OrthodoxRoad I am a Altar Server. My Bishop wants me to change all of the wicks to wax wicks. He likes them better for some reason. I guess I will just follow the directions.

How often do you find you need to refill the lamp?
@OrthodoxRoad
@OrthodoxRoad 2 года назад
Three times a day. It never goes dry, the oil level just drops too low for the wick to pull up sufficient oil.

Every time I use extra virgin olive oil the flame is almost non existent… I have got the same exact set up you have.. I don’t get what I’m doing wrong.
@greghawkins549
@greghawkins549 2 года назад
I saw your comment and thought I'd share what I noticed. I set up my oil lamp as per this video and I used extra virgin olive oil. Everything worked well for several hours, then I trimmed the wick and afterwards my flame was almost non-existant (hence I remembered your comment). I slightly bent the wick holder so that the bottom of the metal wick holder was closer to the oil so that the oil was touching the bottom tube. The flame responded well and became vibrant and "normal", not weak and small as it had been. So I imagine that when the oil has less distance to travel up, the flame will respond accordingly. I also think I must have interrupted the capillary action when I trimmed the wick. Another note on extra virgin olive oil; when I visited an Orthodox monastery and purchased my oil lamp, the monk (or novice) working in the book store suggested not using extra virgin as the non-extra virgin is thiner (hence I assume it travels up the wick easier). I prefer extra virgin as the other usually is extracted with either steam or chemicals or both. Hope you get your lamp working.

I've had trouble with extra virgin (EVOO) lately as well. About a month ago, I switched over to regular and my lamp has been burning much better. Sometimes you have to experiment. A brand that works for a few years may stop working if they change their supplier(s) and manufacturing practices.
@OrthodoxRoad
@OrthodoxRoad 2 года назад
@@greghawkins549 Yes, I believe you (or the monk/novice) is correct. The regular is thinner than EVOO. The wicks that I've been buying since after making this video are thicker, so a thinner oil is now needed.
