One of our trips in Oimyakon was out to the Indigirka river to see how the people here catch fish during the winter when it is -55°C and everything is covered in a layer of snow and ice. The holes need to be cleared regularly, as they freeze over again in a matter of minutes. However, the cold does at least mean you don't need to worry about keeping your catch fresh, as any fish thrown onto the ice flash freezes in front of your eyes...
Our trip through Yakutia was arranged by Bolot at Visit Yakutia (visityakutia.com) and expertly carried out by our driver, Alexander.

The Indigirka River. a.k.a. The coldest permanently inhabited settlement on Earth.

Oimyakon is unofficially the coldest inhabited place in the northern hemisphere, with a lowest temperature of -71. 2°C, although that was never scientifically recorded. It reached -55°C while we were there.

Oymyakon could be a great name for a planetary system in the Star Wars universe !

It certainly would! And then I could say, in times to come, that a long time ago, I was in a galaxy far, far away...

A mix between beautiful and deadly. I feel sorry for the fish. What would a vegetarian eat there? :-) are there also homeless dogs there? Greetings from Austria Gerhard

Gerhard, thanks for your interest and questions. Life out there is, as you say, both beautiful and deadly. And always tough. Dogs are either kept as working animals (guarding property) or they are wild. In either case, they will usually eat what they can catch themselves. Owners would not expect to feed them, although they might give them treats. As for human food, since almost nothing is produced locally and most things have to be brought in, there is not much option about what to eat or not. So it would be difficult to avoid meat. In any case, fish is a staple part of the diet. However, given the harsh climate, all animals live much wilder and more natural lives, so if this is a question of animal welfare, I would see the lifestyle as much more balanced and ethical than the intensive (and cruel) farming practices in Europe. Hope that helps!
