The Orian Dochu (Ichiyo Sakura festival) is an annual festival held on the second Saturday of April. This year it was moved to the Sunday due to bad weather. #geisha #oiran #asakusa #tokyo #japan
The Oiran is the highest level of courtesan (ie prostitute) and the heavy make up and elaborate kimono's they wear often get them mistaken for Geisha. However, Geisha don't sleep with their clients which is a big difference.
The highest ranking Oiran, the Taiyu, were highly respected, even as much as a Samurai! The festival walks through the streets of Yoshiwara, which is still a red light district today.

Very interesting, also very solemn serious faces at the beginning but a few smiles at the end (possibly knowing they were on their way for a cold beer)😉🍺🍻 What is the story behind the figure of eight walking?

From what I read it was something to do with proving her wealth and skills because it took ages to learn how to walk like that. Also the shoes were really expensive and when walking like that they got scuffed so it was kind of to show hey I’m so rich I don’t care. Yes I think at the end they were very happy to know they could go and relax for a beer 😂

@@geordiesabroad thank you for that info, very interesting. I wonder if they could still walk in those shoes in their retirement years.🤔
