There's possibly two ways to interpret Noatak's final tear: He was either truly happy for the first time in forever, wishing he could finally make it up to his brother, and that they could be a family once again.. Or he indeed knew what was about to happen, and it was a bittersweet tear of acceptance. He knew they both have gone too far, and despite how much he wants for things to be back to normal - he knows it's not going to happen
@Mrryn
@Mrryn Год назад
I mean, he was able to sense and yoink Korra out from hiding during her and Mako's confrontation with him with his psychic bloodbending. He 100% could feel what Tarrlok was doing but understood how far gone things were if that was what he felt needed to be done so Noatak came out fully and let it happen. The fact that he goes from smiling at hearing his name to a much more solemn face with regret when he sheds the tear puts it over the top.

I honestly think the multiple villain structure worked well after ALTA was a single big bad story. Most of the other avatars have vast backstories with multiple conflicts (including aang with Yakone actually…) but I liked that this story felt like how an avatar would have to behave in peacetime following her predecessor’s ending of a century long conflict. It shows good world building because after the defeat of such a large foe as the fire nation and a few decades of peace and rebuilding, power vacuums will ultimately open in many places as a means to throw the world out of balance once again
@mikehunt69981
@mikehunt69981 Год назад
@obviouslyPSM I would agree with that if each of Korra's villains weren't all on the verge of world domination/revolution. There's a lot about Korra I love, but the things that drag it down reeeally drag it down. It sucks because you know it's not because the writers aren't talented, it's cause the studio kept pulling their resources and only giving them one season at a time. You can really tell with the last two seasons how much less money they were working with. Honestly the fact that it came out as good as it is was kind of a miracle.

She was originally intended to be a spy but they couldn't go through with it and she's the best!

I remember throughout the first season there were a lot of people expecting her to turn traitor at some point. Admittedly, I think that basing her design so much on Lust from FMA kinda had something to do with that. The similarities left this almost subconscious thought that she was obviously going to be a bad guy. I've always like Asami myself. I think her arc throughout the series is really good, especially in terms of her growing friendship with Korra. (Nobody go spoiling anything, I know where that goes, Nat doesn't need to yet)

Bit of a mature thought that I’ve heard tossed around surrounding the last episode: before Korra unknowingly called Aang, she was crying because she lost most of her bending and knew what that meant for the world; her tear falling off the cliff represented what she intended to do. She intended to sacrifice herself, so that the world would have a fully capable Avatar to protect it. That’s why Aang said “when we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change.”

The bloodbender's ability to take bending away can be explained by real-life concepts such as a stroke can cause someone to lose certain body movements. So Amon figured out which part of people's brains he had to hit so they couldn't bend anymore. It's a pretty cool and dark concept.

Yeah, and also waterbending's other special is healing capacity. If I remember correctly the first Avatar series, they did had a scene showing a lecture about some meridians used in healing practices. And if you can heal using these, there's no reason you can't... well... un-heal.

Korra having to struggle with not having her bending in the coming seasons as an arc is a thought I think many of us had, a shame they couldn't pursue the idea. As others have pointed out, the creators didn't know the show would continue past the first season, hence why it has such a finality to it. The production mess of this show definitely contributes to its decreased quality.

That’s really why I don’t fault the show or the writers for ending season 1 that way because yes in hindsight it would’ve been really interesting but that’s also the only way you can say it, is in hindsight I’m sure they would’ve kept her without her bending for awhile if they had known they would be able to continue the story
@sittingonrainclouds
@sittingonrainclouds Год назад
i’m not sure if you picked up on this, but in the scene at 28:36 it’s implied (heavily) that korra was about to jump off the cliff. That’s why she pushed everyone away and stood by the cliff side, and one of her tears drops off the cliff, indicating she was leaning over. Korra’s entire sense of identity since her childhood has been based around being the avatar, so when she felt as though she had lost that forever, she felt like she had no choice but to die and let the cycle renew.

@greibach_vt Год назад
I'm glad you're enjoying it, and you're definitely picking up on the best part of the series-- the villains are much more relatable, tragic, and understandable. Firelord Ozai was, for all intents and purposes, a generic faceless evil force for everyone to simply hate. Yes, we saw some screentime of him, but not much. His motivation was "I'm a tyrant, I want to rule the world". There was no complicated backstory, no real way to empathize with him. But you take Amon and say, you know, this kid had a tragic upbringing. This family was ruined from within by the corrupting influence of the father, and growing a hatred towards bending makes sense. The points the equalists make are valid, and don't have easy solutions. After all, lots of jobs simply require bending because that's what their technology is built upon. As others have said, S2 is a bit rough, especially the beginning, but it does end up decent, and S3 and S4 are incredible. The payoffs are worth it.

Well, Korra is meant to be a prodigy in the physical aspects of bending, but a novice in the spiritual aspects. That’s why she couldn’t airbend, because it’s one of the most spiritual bending styles in the Verse. Water bending healing is about moving chi along the chi paths of the body. He’s essentially using blood vending to sever or perma block the main path that connects you to your element so pretty much what a chi blocker does but permanently. Instead of just blocking it for a bit he’s essentially cutting the line via blood bending. It’s why Korra could still airbend because the line to that element was essentially dormant since she’d never airbended before so it wouldn’t have shown up on his radar when he severed the other three paths.

The finale is just so dang emotional. You cut out 2 moments after we see Korra tearing up that really show how bad it was. 1) Right after, we see the tear fall over the edge down to the ice below - implying she was standing right at the edge. 2) When Aang shows up he says “when we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change.” Both together suggest Korra was thinking about possibly jumping off the cliff for a moment. Something I feel is overlooked about everyone saying Season 2 is the roughest one is that it's because it wasn't going to happen; Season 1 was supposed to be a standalone limited run Series (which is also why the finale for 1 feels like it's going out of it's way to wrap up loose ends) and 2's script was kinda rushed out the door when it was renewed. Books 3 and 4 ore better because they got to have a little more time.

They really nailed the villains in this show! They feel very real and the issues they're trying to solve are valid even if their solution isn't. Their back story makes sense too. I love that the studio was brave enough to tackle such complex and much more grown up themes. The abusive father, social inequality and injustice. The double suicide at the end (the tears on the brothers face knowing what's gonna happen because he can feel the movements through bloodbending) and korra considering to kill herself to restart the cycle, thinking that she wouldn't be good enough with just her air bending powers and having been through so much! One thing I love about Korra is that since she is older than Aang was, we get to explore deeper villains. In ATLA of course Zuko was a pretty deep character but he was a pretty classic redemption arc. With Korra's villains they all feel so much more than just your comic book capital E Evil that ATLA had with Firelord Ozai. You can see it right away in this first book with Tarrlok and Noatak. Their story is so sad and it really does make you feel for them, despite them being pretty evil both. Ozai everyone was just happy to see him defeated. There is something special about a bittersweet victory.

No, the other seasons were not planned. Each year Nickelodeon was leaving them hanging on whether or not they'd renew the show. The only seasons that didn't suffer from that were 3 and 4. I always looked at Amon's ability to take away bending is the opposite way Katara could heal the flow of Chi back when Ty Lee Chi blocked the earth benders during the Drill episode. She just wasnt aboe to heal it here because it was blood bending that blocked the Chi flow and not only would she need a full moon I'm sure she's done what she can to unlearn it as much as she could.

@Sheeya97

@@af3897 **SPOILERS** I understand those that enjoy the faster pace nature of Korra, but personally while I enjoy Korra I think there are too many illogical things in the show, even in the first season. When I saw them the first time I immediately thought in my mind "bullshit". I also really dislike the way technology advanced and how it resembles more of a high technological world than a world of bending - but that's just my personal preference. But let's talk about lightning bending. I feel like it's used way too casually in this series, and there's no way Mako or w/e his name was can shoot out lightning while he's being blood bended. Lightning bending is definitely not that easy to do, which we can see from Iroh's demonstration. Doing it like that is more likely to self-destruct since he shouldn't be able to properly control his internal energy to produce lightning while Amon was bending his blood and obstructing his energy channels. Afaik it was a secret art that only the royal family could use. Perhaps it was similar to Amon's family that was able to use blood bending without full moon, or perhaps any firebender could use it, it's still unlikely to have leaked out to everyone and developed to the point where it could be used effortlessly. Blood bending. In ATLA it was an extremely overpowered art that AFAIK could only be used during the full moon. So the fact that Amon could use it without the full moon would make his bending and also blood bending even more powerful than normally. So when Amon is blood bending Korra, and she breaks free to slam him into the water, that's just ridiculous in my eyes. Even Aang could not fight back without the Avatar state against blood bending, let alone a weakened Korra. Amon had a lot of potential, but I feel like the conclusion was not at all worthy of his potential. Then they toned down the power of bending so significantly. In 95% of scenes bending just felt like it lacked the power it had in ATLA. Later in S3 or something... I can understand that earth benders can bend lava, but to produce lava from any piece of earth at any time is just such bullshit. How can an earth bender heat up earth to the point that it becomes lava? There's no way an earth bender can just draw out lava from anywhere, it's so illogical. Then we have Zaheer that read some scriptures about a past air bender, and then as soon as he conveniently was gifted air-bending, he could suddenly use it as if he'd practiced it for decades, not to mention use a super-advanced ability that allowed him to fly, and the suffocation thingy. I can understand him being able to pick it up fairly quickly as he was already a master in martial arts, but no way he can pick it up instantly to such an advanced level. That's just ridiculous. The plots of each season after S1 was also underwhelming because it didn't have 3 whole seasons like ATLA to build up for it. IIRC they were also resolved in one season each. Like I said, Amon had a lot of potential, but I think he needed to have the same build-up as Fire Lord Ozai and the Fire Nation had in ATLA. The way Korra had picked up 3 different bendings so casually at the age of 5 or however old she was in the first episode is also ridiculous. Past Avatars would usually not even realize that they're the avatar, let alone learn multiple elements, until they were told when they were sixteen years old. Aang who was an airbending master at like 10 had found out he was the Avatar early but still hadn't been able to learn any other bending until much later, and we saw how easy he picked up 2 of the 3 other elements. The whole plot with robots using laser-beams with spirit energy was just boring too. I didn't like that at all, but again that's personal preference I guess. It's been a while since I watched Korra so I don't remember all the things that happened and is just pulling it from my memory, but I'm sure there were other things I had problems with as well. I still enjoyed Korra, but it deviated too much from ATLA and created things that wasn't entirely logical within the bounds of the avatar-verse.

@@Sheeya97 **SPOILERS** Personally, I didn't mind the technological advancements. The show takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar. Think about how much technology changed from 1870 to 1940 in our own world. In their world, they have bending to help push that along even faster. It's also worth mentioning that with the nations coming together more and people being exposed to more types of bending, it makes sense that the non-benders would begin to develop technologies that almost simulate bending for themselves in a way. It's fine if that's still not your cup of tea, but I thought it made perfect sense for the most part. The mechs were a bit weird, but I appreciate that they tried to be a little original and didn't just introduce new technology in the order it came out from our world. They made sure to highlight how the elements still played a role in this technology (water/steam for the mechs, metal bending to move the colossus, etc.) which goes to show how much bending still influences their world, even for the non-benders trying to get on their level. With lightning bending, I don't think it's too crazy to believe that the technique would be improved upon and mastered by individuals in the 70 years after the Hundred Years' War ended and the bending style was no longer exclusive to the royal family. Similarly to how Iroh looked to water bending when he invented the redirecting move, I think as cultures mixed, so did ideas. I'm not trying to say Mako is a better lightning bender than Iroh or Azula, but he *does* have the advantage of ideas and techniques being improved upon and normalized in society as time passed. It's sort of like Einstein and any scientist today--the ones today aren't necessarily better, they just have the upper hand with more time and knowledge on their side. Considering how lightning bending is widely used to power cities in Korra, I don't think its hard to believe that it got easier to do. Still, I'll admit that it's a bit questionable that Mako was able to do it while being blood-bent, but I'm willing to suspend my disbelief and assume he used 'all the willpower he had left' or whatever. The same goes for Korra breaking the blood bending long enough to air-kick Amon. It's a bit unbelievable, but you could argue many things like "Amon was slipping after getting exposed by Korra at the rally and having his right-hand-man turn on him" or "his blood bending is slightly weaker because some of the strength is being used to do it psychically to multiple people" or something. I completely disagree about the power of bending getting toned down later on. I think the fight scenes in Korra are leagues better than they were in ATLA, and they're far more creative. Perhaps it feels less powerful because its *all* so powerful? Kind of the whole "when everyone's super, no one is" from Incredibles. Most of the people we see bending in Korra are absolute masters at their craft or are straight up gifted. As for lava bending, if you watch closely when Ghazan does it, he's bending the rocks so quickly that it generates heat and begins to melt into lava. So yes, theoretically any old piece of earth could be turned to lava, but it's not like its easy to do. We only really know of like two people being able to do it, and one of them is one of those incredibly rare, gifted benders that Sokka mentions in the Yakone case (up there with people like Combustion Man, P'li, Amon, Tarlok, Bumi, Toph, etc). I really don't think it's that unbelievable, especially since your average earth bender is not able to do that. Zaheer is an interesting case because he studied Air bending and Air Nomad culture for years. Not just some scriptures, he's essentially an expert on the matter, despite not being able to airbend himself. So when he DOES get bending, he picks it up pretty quick. And who knows how long he had airbending before he made his escape. The shift changes were weeks apart so he could've spent weeks practicing and getting the hang of it when no one was looking. And despite all that, Tenzin was still kind of kicking his ass and had him on the ropes during their fight at one of the Air Temples before the other members of the Red Lotus stepped in. Zaheer may be good, but he was still no match for an actual Air Bending master. While the flight thing was a bit crazy, it does make sense when you think about it. He needed to let go of all earthly attachments in order to fly, something Aang wasn't even capable of doing when Guru Patik told him he needed to. Zaheer couldn't do this until the love of his life (the only thing keeping him attached to the earth) died. So it's not like he was just able to do it, a great sacrifice had to be made for it to happen--something that Aang and Tenzin thankfully never had to experience. I didn't mind the plots being relatively wrapped up in each season and I liked that they went for a bit of a different format than ATLA. I don't really prefer one over the other, I think they both work for their respective shows. I agree that it wouldve been nice to get more buildup for Amon, but I didn't feel underwhelmed. The second half of season 1 is where I thought things were really starting to pick up and get good. Korra picking up 3 different bending styles at age 5 really isn't that big of a deal imo. It was certainly impressive, but Aang got the hang of waterbending and firebending pretty quickly (he only stopped firebending after hurting Katara) despite never even trying to do either previously. Sure it takes some time for most Avatars to begin picking up the elements, let alone know they're the Avatar, but I think every Avatar is different. Why shouldn't some of them get the hang of it quicker? Korra also lived in a world where an incredibly long war had ended not that long ago, and Aang was basically a hero for ending it. She probably looked up to him and like any little kid, would try to imitate their hero. Once they knew she was the Avatar, she was able to train earlier and got the hang of it quicker because the brain is good at doing that at that age (same reason its easier to learn a language when you're young). To each their own on the spirit vine stuff, but I thought it was cool and made enough sense to be plausible. It was clearly based on the atomic bomb and how that crazy nuclear power became a thing in a time when technology was otherwise not all that advanced. I hope I don't sound like I'm trying to fight or anything lol, I just love discussion and thought I'd give some counterpoints! Like you said, it really all comes down to preference so it's perfectly understandable if you don't change your mind (I probably won't be changing mine either lol).

Almost parallels into when Katara first blood bended, she didn't want to, and told Hama she would never, but when it came down to saving Aang and Sokka she did, and Hama's last words to her were "My work is done. Not sure if anyone explained to you yet but the writers of the show were only told they were getting one season which is why they had to wrap it up. S2 is the same. They only thought they were getting one more season. But S3 and S4 were greenlit at the same time so there's more continuity between those two. Glad you're sticking on this journey! I would also say that I believe a huge factor people aren't as obsessed with Korra is because of misogyny (i.e. also the reason why a lot of people in the fandom hate Katara). Though that is not to say that LOK doesn't have flaws. The pacing for this season Is really well done as amon becomes for of a threat the further we go into the season and i feel like everything is reveled at the right times

I get the feeling the intention would have been to have Korra stay without her bending if they knew they would be getting more than one season. From what i understand what was communicated is that Korra would be a one off so theg ended it in a somewhat definitive way, but after seeing how well it did, they got greenlit for another season so they had to rock with what they had. So korra has all her bending. It takes them a little bit to get back in their groove which is why seaspn 2 is pretty funky

Bloodbending would be a physical block while what Aang did was a spiritual thing. Amon couldn't block her airbending because that connection wasn't there yet to be blocked To understand both her unlocking of air bending and accessing the avatar state you gotta go back to that conversation Aang had with the Guru about what blocks each chakra To simplify: In the teardrop scene Korra was gonna jump off of that cliff so a new and complete avatar could be born. Being the avatar is the biggest honor in the world to her and she was always "Avatar first and herself second". Being willing to relinquish her life so that a new avatar could be born was her earthly attachment (which for Aang was Katara), so that's when she finally get to contact her past lives and enter the Avatar state.

The fact that Amon took away the bending she had but not the air bending which she didn't know yet suggests to me that he was using blood bending to "pinch off" whatever spot in the brain was the link to the bending and all that is needed is to unblock that spot but that requires an understanding of how bending works that only the spirits have and so she needed to be given the knowledge of how to do it. As for the end of Amon and this whole arc - they had been told they were getting a single season so that's what they wrote for but then the ratings were good and the network decided to keep on going, so they needed a new threat to be faced. For what it's worth - I think the series is very good. Some people say season 2 isn't as good, but I don't understand why they say that because to me, the series just keeps improving as we get farther into it.

29:03 we probably would have but nickelodeon only ordered one season as a "limited series" but due to its insane popularity rushed them to make another season and you can really tell

it's interesting to note that Tarlok says "Psychic Bloodbending Technique." Meaning that they don't need their bodies to be able to move like all other forms of bending except ONE. ONLY combustion bending works the same way. that's the psychic assassin that Zuko sent after Aang that Sokka calls "Sparky Sparky Boom Man" and he even talks about him in the episode before this one; in the flashback scene.

13:48 Bending is described as being an extension of the senses (highlighted in how Toph’s hearing & sensitivity to the earth around her is heightened due to her congenital blindness) - I’d imagine losing bending to be something akin to losing your ability to sense heat (in essence: the ability to sense the relative energy levels of your surroundings). You can sense where heat is coming from without even seeing it, in the way well trained benders can sense & pull their element from around them without needing to see it (definitely read the Kyoshi & Yangchen books if you’re interested in how in-universe characters describe the sensation/action of bending, they’re phenomenal 🥇👍)

fun fact you need to know is that mako was named after the voice actor who played uncle iroh in ATLA, Mako Iwamatsu, in honor of him after he passed. he passed in the middle of ATLA shortly after the scene with Iroh in the earth kingdom at the tree with the shrine of his deceased son singing. Rip to him

Hi, electrical engineer here. At 6:07, Kora wasn’t safe because of the cloth. She was safe because she wasn’t “grounded”. This is a similar concept as to why birds can sit on transmission lines without being electrocuted. I could go further into detail but I think this will suffice
@grantbell8143
@grantbell8143 Год назад
For those wanting further detail, if Kora had been holding onto a transmission line and her feet were touching the ground, she would have created a “short circuit”. Electricity always travels through the path of least resistance. Since Kora’s body doesn’t contain anything to resist the current, all the electricity would travel through her body and then she would ultimately “explode” from excessive heat or energy I guess

I do want to add a little detail about how Mako reacted and also behaved after Korra escaped Tarlok. When he asked for them to give her space he was doing what professionals in the emergency service do when retrieving a victim of a crime, you need to give them space and allow them time to recoup before you start bombarding them with questions. This is also a close friend of his, it’s only natural to fear for their safety. I love your reactions, keep ‘em up! 💛💛

At the end of Tarrlok's flashback they should have the pro bending commentator saying "This book is brought to you by Avatar Aang. Cause if it was Kyoshi dealing with Yakone there would be no face changing surgery, and definitely no blood bending kids in the northern water tribe"

The music is the unsung hero of the entire series. It's one of my favorite things about the show, second only to the villains. Third is episodes 7 and 8 of season 2.

Natalie, huge HUGE fan of yours. Gotta tells ya, I've been waiting for this for quite some time and you never disappoint. I urge you to please check out the rest of the series. Coming from an old man who grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, illustrating comics, studying animation (Ever since the Transformers Movie in 84) is preferred the tad more adult themed stories here. Not to take away from the Last Airbender, of course. I just felt that the stories were a little more mature and less sweet. Like the stuff I grew up on. Anyway, I very seldom get to say anything except that I love going back and rewatching your shows. Stay Golden, my Dearest!!

Noatak did indeed know what his brother was doing. It ties into the warehouse scene where Amon walks away from korra than attacks her. Highly skilled water benders and bloodbenders like Noatak can quite literally fell another persons movements through water bending. Noatak felt Tarrlok open the tank and reach for the glove, hence why he was crying.

28:56 If you ever think that the finale is a bit rushed (Korra got her bending back, got Mako, connected to her spiritual self, got the avatar state etc..) it's because the show was originally planned one season. I know some people don't like the finale, but I like to think this is the reason why

Everyone says this, but even if the show was planned for one season, it's still a shitty way to end it. If they didn't think they had enough time to fully flesh out the plot points and character beats, then don't introduce them. Btw I'm not going in on you specifically. This is just a really common thing people bring up and I don't think it excuses the writing in season 1.

I’m sure you’ve researched or someone else commented, BUT amon uses bloodbending to basically internally chi block someone to “permanently” block their bending, kinda like a clot in their chackra, i do think another bloodbender could restore it (katara wasnt using a full moon) so Aang used spiritbending to restore korra, teaching it to her, so she can restore others/lin

What kind of explains the quick resolution at the end, is (if I remember correctly) Nickelodeon only requested - or the creators originally only had planned out - one season. Then when Nickelodeon saw how popular it was, they renewed it for another season.

Originally they only had one season so they set out to have a full encompassing story in that season. That’s also why some of the things that feel rushed, indeed are: Rapid relationship growth, getting her bending back before the “end” But they were green lit the following 3 together, so you will see the stories thread into each other more Tho when you brought up the idea of her going into season 2 as only an air bender, like a reset to Aang, that would’ve been kinda cool.

Hey I know a lot of people have mentioned it already, but I will too just so there's more chances of you seeing it. I'm not sure how you'll feel about Season 2, but whatever happens just know that Season 3 and 4 are great. However you feel next season, please don't give up on the show. 🙂

29:47 Yeah I 100% agree. Especially given the theme of the next book. But I'm sure part of it was the fact that they wrote the season before a 2nd season/book was approved.

Amon could feel his brother's movements through blood bending and knew what was about to happen. He let his brother do it and that's why he shed the tear.
