Spartan slaves are actually called helots. Important distinction because it's more of a caste system than slavery.
@ManyATrueNerd
@ManyATrueNerd 8 лет назад
True, but when you're forced to wear a dog-skin cap to show how worthless you are as you toil in the fields, the distinction probably feels quite small...

@nickdziura7373
@nickdziura7373 8 лет назад
+Many A True Nerd actually, if you had no precedent, and this was the way life had been, the distinction might be pretty large
@symphonyofaria
@symphonyofaria 8 лет назад
Nick Dziura It's an important distinction because the Spartan State had no concept of ownership for citizens. Ergo, this means you cannot possibly own a slave. Citizens were divided into usefulness, from your warriors to your farmers. Helots were in fact, not treated as worthless. They were simply seen as a functioning portion of society that is vital to the continuation of the nation. Whereas slaves can range from personal toys to cheap alternatives to actually hiring someone

Just because there are multiple contributors to the Odyssey and the Illiad doesn't mean Homer didn't exist, it just means he wasn't the sole contributor. It's entirely possible one guy set up the framework or devised the structure or had a particularly good rendition of it.

not a minute in and Jon goes on an exposition about homer, the Illiad and the Odessey... gonna be a good video
@TheGrinningViking
@TheGrinningViking 8 лет назад
The argument I heard was that Homer (I suppose it applies to either Homer) likely either assembled separate stories either already written down or from the oral tradition - there was a tradition of making huge assemblage books from individual tales that persisted in nearby regions, and not really a lot of evidence of people doing collaborative writing on entirely new works, so it would have made sense. "Homer scribed this" could mean that he just took down what was already there and embellished a bit, but who knows really? If I ever get a time machine up and running I will certainly be greeting the fire carrying mob that eventually turned up at the doors of the library of alexandria with a chain gun. :3

Mine was the story about the King who got told that he'd stop being blind if he got urinated on by a woman who hasn't slept with anyone other than their husband. And then eventually regained his sight (and executed all the women who didn't bring his sight back, including his wife). Narrowly beats his treatise on why Persians have weak skulls.
