Jeremy Wakefield plays Steel Guitar Legend “Speedy West’s” Fully restored 1947 Bigsby Pedal Steel Guitar. The guitar was lost for over 50 years. No one knew what happened to it.
It was a milestone instrument, designed and built by legendary guitar and parts builder Paul Bigsby. Deke Dickerson found and restored the guitar, and this was it’s first night back in action. The small group of people on hand for this presentation were like myself-awestruck!
This song also features Deke Dickerson playing some impressive upright bass!

This reminds me of a concert that we played when I was an instructor at Roger's State College. The audience included Speedy West, Leon Mcauliffe and Eldon Shamblin. We opened with Oklahoma Stomp and it got counted in at about double the speed at which I could play it. I somehow hacked my way through it and at the end of the show Speedy came up and introduced himself and shook my hand. He was a real gentleman.

VERY interesting instrument, the dawn of pedal steel! Here it's being played as a traditional console, not hearing any pedal changes. My understanding is that early instruments used pedal change to lock into another tuning. How far we've come! My 12 string with 7 pedals and 5 knee levers can morph into crazy stuff that I don't even know what to do with yet. BUT- with all that, very often I just lock right knee right into C6 (B6 on U-12) and have a blast with western swing! Whole different type of playing with lots of jumping around the neck and Bar bends. When men were men! And Speedy was tops!

He used to tell us how much he regretted selling that guitar. I know how happy he would have been to see it restored and being played!!

@@glencoe6305 There are 4 pedals on Speedy's Bigsby. None of them lower notes, however, only raise. Pedals 1 & 2 are both on the outer neck, P3 center neck, P4 raises 2 strings on the inside neck.

Jeremy & Dave are a lot like Speedy West & Jommy Bryant. Finding Speedy's ax reminded me of my '57 Strat, purchased at O.K. Houck Piano store in Memphis TN in November 1957 for a hundred fifty bucks with a case. She disappeared in Hawaii sometime after I started making a living as a bassist. Wish there was a way to track her down.

I'd be interested to know the story on the steel. Where was it found, who restored it? Clinesmith?

I noticed in the new sponge bob movie they made new music of Jeremy's style to match the show well, unlike the other two films witch did neither the third movie upholds the musical spirit of SpongeBob SquarePants with the classical steel guitar making new ost for the movie and possibly the show
