Smriti Biswas was one of the most vivacious and attractive actors in the 1940s and 50s, often playing spirited vamps, parallel or second lead heroines in films. Her spontaneity and voluptuous appearance were always widely appreciated by one and all. Her screen debut was as a child actor in the 1930 film ‘Sandhya’. Moving to Lahore in the early 40s, she met the famous producer-director Dalsukh Pancholi who signed her for his film ‘Dhamkee’ (1943). Director S.D. Narang, who she was to marry later, cast her as the female lead opposite himself in the film ‘Nai Bhabhi’ (1944).
Moving to her native Calcutta post the Partition, she appeared in a number of high profile Bengali films such as ‘Nirakshar’, ‘Anurag’, ‘Abu Hasan’ and ‘Abhishapta’ (all 1952). She also appeared in Bimal Roy’s Hindi film ‘Pehla Aadmi’ (1950).
Her most famous appearances include those in the films ‘Chandni Chowk’ (1954), ‘Raj Kanya’ (1955), ‘Baap re Baap’ (1955), the real-time ‘Jagte Raho’ (1956), ‘Sailaab’ 91956), ‘Taksaal’ (1956), ‘Dilli ka Thug’ (1958), Mrinal Sen’s ‘Neel Akasher Neechey’ (1959) and ‘Modern Girl’ (1961)
