HappyConsoleGamer I'll keep an eye out for it. currently getting ready for convention in AZ at the end of the month. it will be like 120 outside so my face will melt off,but I'll try to keep an eye out for anything interesting
HappyConsoleGamer you're too awesome man. You have the knowledge and storytelling ability to put my passion into words. I have to show your videos like this to my mates!! Haha. It gets them as hyped as me for the greatness of these anime/games. Anyways, thanks again. Your videos are pretty much my favourite things to watch for nostalgia/hype/knowledge/comfort reasons
Thanks for these recommendations, John! I just wish that Macross/Southern Cross/Mospeada weren't so damn EXPENSIVE. Also, on Amazon Prime Video in the US, you can watch all three with your Prime Video subscription.
I have to tell you mate, i love the way that all your vids come from your personal life, sharing your childhood memories and telling us your stories we love that mate keep it up!
I just love these old school anime videos, since no one else talks about these (at least not in high quality videos like this). Sometimes you say 'I could go on about this, but I won't', no PLEASE DO. Ramble on endlessly. We love hearing you talk about them. I'd say select less shows and movies per part and just talk to your hearts content if that's what it takes. Anyway, thanks for being awesome as always.
I do enjoy a lot of new anime, but the anime of 1980s and 90s has a more human and charming feeling to them. You can see the flaws and the pencil/paint strokes of the artist. Mazinger Z, Armored Trooper Votoms, Fist of the Northstar, Getter Robo and Hajime no Ippo are some of my favorites.
Yeah and I feel alot of them are much darker/grittier. If you compare iron blooded orphans (trying to be gritty) to zeta gundam (actually really gritty) there is no comparison.
Man, you always have the right timing for this recomendation videos. I just finished Bubblegum Crisis and was looking for something equally awesome. Thanks!
I love it when you talk about anime, Johnny! I guess I'm a bit of an old soul who really loves the charm of old school anime and always love to hear your recomendations and how enthusiastic you are for all of these shows and games!
Love these anime recommendations Johnny! I really only watch anime that you are into and suggest because I find it too hard to find elsewhere and I really love the older stuff that you are into. Wings of Mayonaese or whatever the hell its called was awesome!
I've gotten back into watching anime recently, checking out more modern stuff, but I grew up on 80s-90s anime, so this video definitely resonates with me. It's amazing to recall how niche it was, and how mainstream it became.
Great episode and love for Macross Plus. I found your channel years ago not for gaming but while searching macross on YT. You had just done an episode about Macross and your gold book etc. Completely agree with everything you said about Macross plus and still watch it to this day. Love Mospeada too. Really enjoyed this one.
I come back to this video series every few years to jot down a few new titles to check out. When I first watched it, I haven’t watched any of them. Now I think I’m at 75%.
Yay you finally talked about Patlabor, my favorite anime! I agree with your view. Patlabor is not about robot but story and characters. Actually my favorite episode of TV series doesn't even contain any mech scene (in this episode, the members of the labor team just wait for food delivery that they ordered...). My favorite Patlabor is The Movie 2 that also doesn't contain many mech scenes but I absolutely love it. The music, the atmosphere... just beautiful.
Right out the gate with Black Magic M66. I bought that for my friend for his birthday on vhs in the 90's, and we watched it until the tape was unwatchable, and nobody I've met since has heard of it. Same with Project A-Ko. Top tier, sir.
Damn right thanks Johnny! Have not heard of at least half of these animes and it's so fucking enjoyable seeing how passionate you are and how much you truly care about this shit. Much love \m/ by the way what's your background music?
One can not simply mention The Vision of Escaflowne without mentioning the music by Yoko Kanno and Hajime Mizoguchi. (although my favourite is the movie soundtrack, I can't recommend the movie)
Thank you so much for this Johnny. I will humbly admit I have only watched Cardcaptor Sakura when growing up in Spain but otherwise I haven't seen ANY anime whatsoever. All of the knowledge you share is enriching me so much!. Thank you!.
Black magic, I always saw that advertised on my old anime vhs tapes I got from the market. Only one stall in my entire city had them and they only had about 3 or 4 new ones every few months. Had to go with my grandparents when I was 3 years old lol
holy crap I've been watching anime that you have mentioned in your last anime video and movies and I really enjoy them. Such a coincidence you come up with a part 2
Black Magic M66, well familiar with it as the old fart that i am :) Got the VHS,The DVD and the Manga of Black Magic M66, glad to see it get some love, it still holds up and i still enjoy it after all this time. I can't deny how much of an impact Project A-Ko has had, it's been quite hard to ignore and so evident, however it did not have that influence on me myself but i saw it and it had an impact on other peoples art, i certainly liked it and it had an impact on me in another way but not when it came to my artstyle or what i wanted to create. I got into Anime a bit earlier, the first one i saw was back around 83 and from there on i saw more throughout the eighties and did not get to A-ko until the probably around the very start of the 90'ts. My influence was more Go nagai, Leiji Matsumoto, Shotaro Ishinomori and people like that and then the more ultra violent stuff and obscure Anime came in around the start of the 90'ts when i started hunting for bootleg tapes and saved up money for expensive imports :D Yes why the hell have we not gotten an official real release of Arion! It's a crime :) I still have my old early VHS tapes of Gall Force so yes i remember it well Johnny, i pretty much remember all of these old forgotten moldy and wonderful animes that had a real soul and aura of passion and REAL hard work behind it :) Maross Plus is excellent, what an achievement it was and still is. I like everything Patlabor, all good stuff in my anime book and i like that it is slow and takes it's time building the story and atmosphere :) I been meaning to watch Escaflowne again, also have not seen it since about the time it came out, very good series. Always great to hear some talk and love about some good old anime it reminds me of my own past and my love and passion for this sort of stuff. Great video Johnny, keep the love and passion alive brother!
Oh my god, Johnny! I love Project A-Ko so much (as evident by my totally anime-inspired avatar you see on the left)! I recognized the DVD case before you even picked it up, even at an odd angle relative to the camera. That movie is so effed-up. I love how a high school drama slowly evolves into the greatest anime fight scene of all time. It starts with fists and ends with planes, tanks, and spaceships. I love it!!!! Oh, one of my favorite movies ever. Bravo, sir.
i grew up in Brazil in the 90s and amines were a craze there! great amines such as Saint Seiya (my favourite anime EVER!!), Sharuto, Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho, etc were quite mainstream and everybody loved them! This is the first time I see your channel and already subscribbled! You gave nice suggestions here. Keep up the good work! P.S By the way you are a cute pie! 😉
Wow most of these anime titles I have already seen as I bought a bunch of old VHS tapes of anime shows from a local movie store that was closing down :D I also have every OVA/Movie released for Patlabor! I love this show!! I can't wait to get a copy of the liveaction movie!! Awesome video Johnny! Thanks for sharing!
I got most of the U.S. Rendition anime VHS lineup last year and it's a sweet ass colection of work : Black Magic M-66, Appleseed, Gunbuster, Dangaioh, Iczer One... Killer stuff!
Genocyber, Angel Cop, Dominion Tank Police, Bubblegum Crisis, Devil Man, Legend of the Dragon Kings, Cyber City Oedo 808, 3x3 Eyes are some of my favourites.
That Scope dog tee! thankyou for more recommendations previous ones have blown my mind. recently saw all of mayazaki's future boy Conan, life changing, could not recommend it enough.
Important and cool thing about Macross Plus that can get overlooked at times is it was the directorial debut of Shinichiro Watanabe who went on to direct Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo (and more of course) and the first series with a Soundtrack fully by Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Conplex, Wolfs rain, etc). Not just a great series but an important one as well.
Just a heads up to any Canadian anime fans in the comments. If you have a valid Library card, you can rent digital streamed copies of some of the anime Johnny has mentioned previously, completely for free, on the "Hoopla Digital" service. Their selection of anime is limited, but they change it up from time to time. In previous months, they've had things like: Captain Tylor, Star Blazers, Ghost in the Shell, Macross Plus and Street Fighter Alpha The Animation. As of writing this, you can now borrow: Otaku No Video, Bubblegum Crisis (as well as Bubblegum Crash, and the spin-off series A.D. Police Files), Trigun: Badlands, Riding Bean, among others.
Gary Hobbesworth If you area fan of Guyver, definitely give Baoh a viewing. It came a few years before Guyver and Guyver took some inspiration from it but it is good in it's own right. They only made a 50 minute OVA as far as anime goes but it's one of my favorites.
Bro, as usual your anime picks are spot on!...Black Magic M-66...Macross Plus -both brilliant! Do you recall an OVA called Maddox-01:Metal Skin Panic?... Seems really hard to find.
Black magic M66...One of the first official subtitled tapes I bought...though I had the bootleg a few years before. I even found a glow in the dark t-shirt of the robot....awesome film.
So funny Johnny, most of the anime you've shown here that I do have is still on VHS in crates at my house. I also have tons of LD's including Arcadia of My Youth (a Captain Harlock movie.) Macross Plus was HUGE for me in 1996 when I 1st bought it and it led me to buy the Sharon Apple CD and well as the official OST. Love triangles are a prerequisite in Macross series'. :)
I'll always remembe the music of Project A-Ko and the opening scene to the first movie. I'm pretty sure it was the first anime that I ever watched and I was instantly hooked.
Project A-ko was originally an entry in the hardcore Cream Lemon hentai series (hence the suggestive relationship between A-ko, B-ko and C-ko), but the production team saw its potential to be more of a fun and wacky adventure, and just ran with that instead. I've only seen the first entry of Gall Force, which was pretty cool sci-fi, but gets reaaally weird by the end. My brother loves Captain Tylor. I have to watch it sometime, but he highly recommends it. If you like light-hearted, theatrical adventure, it's supposed to be a great introduction to 90's anime. Captain Tylor is still published from Nozomi (Right Stuf), so you can still buy it pretty easily from them. I picked up both of those Patlabor movie boxsets for $10 each. Apparently they had flooded the market with copies and had too much stock on hand, so the publisher wound up selling the sets discounted to distributors throughout the country. I lucked out on the timing when I picked it up. They recently released blu-rays of it, along with the OVA and TV series. Also, an animation expo event in Japan recently released a cool 10 minute Patlabor "Reboot" animation a few months back. It's not available for viewing online anymore, but you can see the trailer for it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0OJSDCIWaPs.html The Escaflowne blu-ray is already out. They had this AMAZING trailer for the release (with a new dub) that's freaking incredible to watch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rua5DnhBh3Q.html Classic show, with some awesome presentation. Old school anime is awesome.
I've still never gotten the chance to watch Gal Force but somehow ended up with the Famicom Disc game in my collection. Speaking of recommendations, did you ever get around to watching Twilight of the Dark Master?
I remember Escaflowne being on Fox Kids Saturday mornings for about 3 or 4 weeks, they didn't even air the first episode because of how violent it was, someone must have just seen animation and mechs and thought it was meant for kids, good times.
HappyConsoleGamer, I think you'd really like a new anime added to Netflix called High Score Girl. It's about two kids who like to frequent the shady Japanese arcades and also talk quite a bit about PC Engine. It's just a good anime about the love of video games.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam is one of those anime's where you watch for the characters and forget about the robots at times ... and it has an end that will rip your guts out.. seriously as for Gundam its the most under rated
Glorious haven't finished the Video Yet, but I noticed the big box as "The Irresponsible Captain Tylor" freaken love that show, good Choice mate :D Also there is an OVA for 10 extra episodes at the end to tie up the story.
I had watched about 90% of those (but some were never released here in UK) I whole heartily agree with you about Project AKo such a classic (Black Magic M-66 is also great) Escaflowne is still one of my favourites (I had imported the DVDs from USA before they were released here in the UK) Some of my other favourites from back in the day are Dominion Tank Police & 3x3 Eyes ^_^
thanks for this info on then topic. i dont know much about anime but i have always had an interest, well since robotech and again later in the 90's. anyways i will look into the titles you talked about in this video. i got some of the stuff you mentioned in the previous video on the topic you posted a while back
I'm 22 and love this old stuff, not in a hipster way I legit love anime from this era and even before (I own manga from the 40s) you seen tomorrow's Joe? It's really good.
I recommend City Hunter, been watching recently and it's very good, old school detective/crime series from 88', with a lot of inspiration from Lupin the III, and an awesome ED.
From the top of my head I would always recommend (without giving an entire wash list) 3x3 Eyes, the ORIGINAL Record of Lodoss War, Noir, Serial Experiments LAIN, Blue Gender, DT Eightron, The original Guyver, and Jin-Roh.
Let's see how many of these I have seen: 1.) Black Magic M-66 (I have seen it. A good ol manga entertainment release. I didn't think it was that memorable but I got my enjoyment out of it because its a solid action based plot. To be honest I need to rewatch it because its been such a long time since I seen it and maybe I can appreciate it a little better. ) 2.) Project A-ko (I have seen it. A good ol us manga corps release. One of my favorite films from the 80's era of anime. The entire series is really good, but the first project a-ko film remains the best with addictive action, one of the best fight scenes that I've ever seen in anime, a great musical score, and an excellent english dub.) 3.) Gall Force (A good ol us manga corps release. I have only seen gall force 3: stardust war. I need to watch the rest of the series, but I remember the 3rd gall force movie being really memorable because of its sheer beauty, excellent ship designs, good music, and a surreal ending.) 4.) Macross Plus (A good ol manga entertainment release. One of the few anime's in my life that I have ranked a perfect 10. There are too many reasons why I think this anime is a masterpiece. Some of the best mech fights that I've ever seen in an anime. To be honest, I think its the best soundtrack yoko kanno has ever made with the welcome addition of the israeli philharmonic orchestra. This is the only anime that I ever felt that the music was good enough that I actually bought the cd soundtrack for this anime. It is just a wild ride from start to finish with some excellent timeless animation. 5.) Patlabor 1 & 2 (A good ol manga entertainment release. I've only seen the first patlabor movie but I really need to rewatch it because I remember the first film being really boring and incredibly slow paced. I'm hoping that when I rewatch it again and I can get a better appreciation for it.) 6.) Escaflowne (I caught a few episodes of it when it was on ytv back in the day but i heard it was severely edited and my wife told me that if I truly want to get the most out of the series then I need to watch it uncut.)
I had Escaflowne on VHS it was the very first version recorded from a local tv network that aired animes. The later releases were butchered to death so I gave up on re-watching it for years and years now. I as well wait on the bluray editions to see if everything is original in there and getting then those to finally re-watch everything in original form.
I wish Netflix or Crunchyroll had old animes to watch in their libraries... I'm really interested in old animes but can't find them without being in low quality. I can't order DVD's either because I'm from Brazil , and importation is a no no here.
Some of my favorite 90s anime: • Black Jack (Drama) • Berserk (Mature Action) • Flame of Recca (Action) • Escaflowne (Mecha) • Yu Yu Hakusho (Action) • Hunter x Hunter (Action) • Trigun (Action) - Seconded • Now and Then, Here and There (Sci-Fi Drama) Also FLCL, which started in 2000 but it's one of my favorites ever so ye.
O Man that takes me back Riding Bean is a Classic i remember Watching it with my Cousins for the first time when they got back in 1993 From Boston Bean Bandit has to by one of My Favorate Characters from Kenichi Sonoda
Trigun was re-released & improved from the old release with better video quality, remixed audio in 5.1(both tracks) & original OP's since each OP had different video. Still waiting for a blu-ray remaster if it ever happens.
