For those who seem confused by my pronunciation of the word decal, please understand there are technically three accepted ways to pronounce it. Some parts of Canada (where I am from) primarily say "deck-uhl", while most of the US says "dee-cal". Some of you have inquired about this in a very respectful way, but a few haven't, which is unfortunate because what makes this world amazing; all of our differences, and language and dialects are parts of that. There is life beyond where we all are from so let's just be polite, eh?

Thank you so much for the memories. My daughter is an electrician, can repair cars and is beautiful like both of you. I dabble in repairing and restoring easy wood items, and have built a thing or two. My mother was able to build and grow anything, so I grew up in a home with no limits on what we could achieve. The connection between youtubers and their viewers is very much like family. There are the know-it-all big brothers, the jealous sisters, the maturity mamas and the "stay in the lane" dads, not to mention the crazy uncles and loonie aunts along with the possessive cousins. They all love you and I'm sure you love them as well. As one who has given up television and its fake nonsense (even on news channels) and gone exclusively to watching you tube channels, I feel a closeness to those who provide the content. I can actually talk to them and they to me. I truly enjoy viewing your work and that of so many others and I wish you nothing but greater growth for the channel and your breadth of "family"! BTW, in this genre of videos, I'm particularly partial to you and Trena. What can I say, I love my daughters (I'm a 75 year male veteran and proud grandpa) and seem to always want to adopt more.

Last year, I bought a $35 stereo and decided to rebuild it for a friend. This one was a Motorola from 1965. The cabinet wood wasn't in bad shape so I immediately started stripping it down. The record player turned out to be a mechanical record changer. I took it apart and repaired a few broken plastic parts and cleaned it thoroughly. I got the record changer working but had to scrap the tuner and amp because of dried up electrolytic capacitors. I installed a new Bluetooth amp and a fresh set of 6.5" component speakers and redid the fabric speaker grills. The finished unit is very nostalgic to listen to. As nice as it turned out, I will never do another again. I ruined all other projects in my shop because of the mess it caused. Also, getting parts for antique record players is a pain.

But you can reconstitute shellac by adding more with some denatured alcohol!! Just kidding-not a hater. I guess it’s true with something that just needs aa little refreshing, not something like this. I did want to add a caution to others though, I had an old Zenith tv cabinet that belonged to my husbands grandmother. Not in as bad shape, I thought I could get away with just redoing the doors and top. Can’t remember what solvent I used on the doors after I took it off but it turns out the beautiful burled finish was “painted” on under the shellac. So I ended up with plain old boring doors. My husband hasn’t decided what he wants to do with it so it’s not completely finished now.

I understand not everyone likes paint. But people have been painting furniture for literally centuries. It’s not a new fad. One could actually argue that painting a piece IS and BECOMES part of its history. Designers from 50, 100, 150 years ago made some mistakes too, haha- not everything old is valuable or even beautiful. Depression era furniture specifically was made very quickly and often with inferior materials. While that alone offers some historical value, perhaps, that doesn’t always translate into literal value, and a lot of them end up trashed because they just don’t fit in with many modern decor styles. Some things should be left alone. But many could REALLY use an update. Considering the landfill is the alternative, I’m all for the updating of many pieces. And then when THAT style goes out again, the next person can make it their own. To me- that is often more successful than a restoration of something that no one actually wants. I do a lot of full restorations but sometimes a bit of paint on lesser quality wood (and especially plastic laminate coated wood, or Formica) can keep something structurally sound from being tossed just because it’s a bit rough or dated cosmetically. But I like to restore certain woods whenever possible. 🙂
@amypreuit4114

I get it. People like what they like and sometimes that's painted furniture. I don't fault anyone for what they love and absolutely better than going to landfill.

You are so right about those tall console radios from the past. My husband is a radio collector and belongs to a club for the hobby. The general consensus among the radio club members is that these large consoles take up a lot of room in a home and often the radios inside are not able to be reworked with original guts. Apartment dwellers and tiny home owners as well as radio buffs just don't have the room for them compared to a smaller radio even of the same era. My husband has over 60 small vintage radios but no consoles because of space. So sad to see these lovely lined big pieces go to the rubbish bins because they are real wood. Some people make them into bar carts depending on the style of the front. Thank you for taking the time to redo yours.

That cabinet reminds me of an old stereo/tv cabinet my parents had. Probably from the early 60s, it was about 5 or 6 feet wide. In the center was the TV tube, next to it was a radio receiver, on top was a record turntable under a hatch. Speakers were at each side, and there was a cabinet for record storage. When I was a kid, the electronics were shot, so my dad gutted it and made it into kind of a sideboard/bureau. The radio and tv components the high school took for one of the shop classes. They de-soldered most of the components in class and reinstalled them for practice. When I met my wife, her parents had a similar one but without the tv. It was still working in the 90s, but they got rid of it when they had to relocate for my FIL’s job. Most of those cabinets are pretty much considered junk as is, but a creative repurpose can keep that old design around. I think most you find will be art deco or mid century modern in style.

I grew up listening to old cabinet radios/stereos like this. Seems like my parents found a working one everywhere we lived. I know there isn't much, if any, profit in restoring these. My dad did a project like this in 1979. He GUTTED the inside and built a structure to hold a stereo set (with 8-Track tape!), then he made the outside beautiful again. He added 30 years to that piece of furniture by repurposing it, just like you will. Thanks for the memory.

So beautiful and reminds me of a radio cabinet that I had in a house I rented in my 20's. Just a wonderful restoration and an absolute pleasure to watch!!....You really brought this golden-oldie back to life and did it justice! For me this brought back some fond memories!... When I was a little kid back in the 70s, my parents had a large cabinet/console turntable-with-radio....though it was not nearly as old as the piece you restored lol! In the case of my parents, I think they bought the unit (new) in the 60s or - at the latest - early 70s. It had a longer frontage and the top opened up like a chest to reveal the sunken turntable with an inset radio on the right-hand side (I can't remember the brand...but based on google image searches, I think it might have been an RCA unit). Even though my parents must've had it for several years ....and I must've heard it used hundreds of times.... the only crystal-clear memories I have of it playing anything was at xmas....i.e. my mom had this collection of Reader's Digest holiday records which she'd play on the unit every Christmas-eve night before my sisters and I would be sent to bed (funny how watching a beautiful restoration video can bring these random memories to life!)….

I grew up with my dad doing this kind of antique furniture restoration. I love your channel. I worked with him some, just doing the stripping, so I couldn’t do a piece like this. My husband worked for him while he went to college and helped restore old radios. They didn’t do the electrical, just the wood restoration. I can really appreciate the work satisfaction you have bringing these old pieces back to life. His work was very satisfying, a lost art, until I found your channel.

I am 58 and my mother and father would be 99 and 100, respectively. When I was growing up, we had a HUGE radio/record player console in our living room. It had to be 5 feet long, and was beautiful. I believe it was purchased when we bought the house I mainly grew up in, around 1970. I can’t remember the brand name of the stereo (or “hi-fi,” as they were called), but my family got a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Every time I watch one of your videos, I am amazed at the results you are able to obtain from the items you started with. This one is your crowning glory, I think! The difference between start to finish, the care and attention to detail, the extra mile of having a professional electrician take care of the electrical work, all show the level of determination you have to make everything as right as it can be. It was lovely to see Andrea working with you on this project and even nicer to hear her explain the work she did. I have been inspired by you to try to tackle a small table from my great-great grandmother that my grandmother was going to get rid of because it is painted and she knew that it wasn't supposed to be originally. At 93, she is not equipped to do the work herself, so when I told her it looks like a solid wood and could be restored, she was extremely happy. I am having a hard time removing that paint, but it will happen. The parts I have cleaned are absolutely gorgeous bare. Top coated they are going to be stunning! Thank you for sharing your stories and work with us - you, Andrea and all of your little fur babies (bosses) are adorable and I wish you all joy, happiness and love.

Unbelievably amazing!‼️🖌️🎨📻 You have become quite the wood worker along with furniture refinishing. My step dad used to buy these and redo all the electronics and I would help him. There was a lot of them around that the cabinets just needed to be cleaned up but the electrical components were toast. He was a car mechanic, but was very good with the electrical stuff. TV's radio's and just about anything electric. There was so many repairs involving the tubes. He would have a bunch of old non repairable things he would keep parts from. So he would have parts other people couldn't find or get ahold of. Therefore, he would make more money off of repairing them. People were still using them a lot at the time, so it really helped with side money. I remember all of it fondly. It made me feel so useful helping him with them. I was preteen at the time. It gave me a since of accomplishment and made me feel like I was bringing money in our household as well. Thanks for sharing and reminding me of such good memories. You probably spent to much time and money doing this piece, but I know it was a labor of the heart ❤️ you both did such an absolutely super fantastic job ‼️🥰☺️❤️ five star ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐ thanks again and looking forward to more from you soon 😊

The audiophiles are not turning this one off! Seeing these radios saved and converted/modernized into usable, functional furniture that can serve as a great place to enjoy music is what it's all about in my opinion. Plus it's so nice to see some late art deco stuff being restored on RU-vid. I'll admit I'm not particularly fond of mcm but anyone who works with wood or in restoration can appreciate how beautiful a lot of the materials on these pieces are and its getting harder and harder to find ones that haven't been bleached or painted over since they're often found in very rough condition for cheap these days. Sadly a lot of the pre-MCM pieces that have been distressed or painted are near impossible to strip due to how fragile/brittle they've become due to age and the condition they were in when they were painted. (as you usually say though, sometimes the damage on antique pieces is extensive enough that painting really is the best option, but you get what I mean) From my experience I think that most people into vintage HiFi would see what you've done and be thrilled because at the end of the day it means one more original saved and one less particle board and plastic Crosley replica of the same aesthetic that ends up broken and in a landfill a year after purchase. Great work! 👍👍👍

This is hands down the best restoration I have seen in all my days, and I am a qualified cabinet maker in traditional antique restoration. These pieces rarely get this sort of restoration because of the hours and hours of work they take but you blew it out of the park. The only difference would have been that we would finish it with french (button) polish which would give the high shine and also fill the grain. But your finish is modern and sympathetic to the piece. Thanks, that was a pleasure to watch.
