I don't know if anyone has already said this, so I'm just gonna say it. Your videos never fail to make me sleep. I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean your videos are so soothing that it makes me fall asleep because there's no background music, just the raw noise. Just like a couple of the real restoration channels do, they don't put background music, just the noise. I don't know if it's just me. All that said, keep it up. I love real restoration videos like this, probably because I watched American Restoration as a kid, and because restoring something is just good.

I am convinced this guy can do anything and everything. Science whatnots, metalworking, woodworking, electrical, leather working, man is The definition of "jack of all trades" 🙌🏻
@OddTinkering
@OddTinkering 2 месяца назад
Thanks! Maybe not everything (yet) but I learn one project at a time, this was my first attempt at sewing leather more than couple of striches to hold a strap. But jack of all trades is probably a good description however I'm infact a literal master one (very unrelated) trade, but that possibly shows in the science side of the videos.

The fact that the channel is based in Finland makes the rune on the axe a lot more significant
@talideon
@talideon 2 месяца назад
I don't think runes were a thing in what's now Finland. That was more of a Norse thing. That said, the word for "poem" in Finnish, "rúnaí", is thought to have originated as a borrowing of the Old Norse "rún", or possibly from an even earlier phase.

All the "compasses" are medieval in origin, not original (per Doctor Jackson Crawford.). The level of leather working is cringe, even allowing for "lack of tools". There are plenty of places on or IRL to get the tools. I grew up with leather working.

A great video (again)! A few tips about the leather work! A) When doing the stitching line, you don't have to push so hard that it "scrapes" the leather. That damages the leather and make it weaker. Just push enough that it makes a dent, because you want to just have a groove you can follow with your eyes! B) When doing the stitching, you have needle-A and needle-B. When you push needle-A through a hole, don't tighten the thread completely, but leave a small loop of untightened thread behind. Then when you push needle-B through the same hole, pull needle-B also through the small loop of untightened thread! Other than that, really nice work! Well done!

This is amazing. One suggestion what you did with electricity we call Electrolytic degreasing ( i work in a galvanisation plant). What you should try after, since the piece is small and you got a good enough power supply, is electropolishing. Basicly same +/-, just more amperage and bit different chemicals, you can google it the basic chemicals for steel can be bought almost everywhere. It would polish the axe perfectly even without the grinding and paste. Its especially good on pieces that are hard to polish, weird shapes etc,. Good luck.

This was amazing! The grain on the handle of the wood, the beautiful leather work, and the fantastic transformation of the rusty old axe head were all top notch. Do you prefer projects like this vs the game hardware restoration? Or is it just liking them both in different ways?
@OddTinkering
@OddTinkering 2 месяца назад
I'd say both are fun, these rusty items are very satisfying and I'd compare the payoff to making art, like "I actually made that", while the electronics offer more about problem solving which is more like "I figured that out" which are both somethin I enjoy but a bit different feelings. But also these old rusty items do force me to figure out problems, usually "how can I make X with my tools" that offers similar satisfaction to figuring out what's wrong with electronics. I do a lot of restorations so this was a lot of fun since it gave me the opportunity to do more creative work than usual, so that was really nice since I haven't posted such work in a while.

When replacing an axe head, you should hold the axe upside down by the handle and strike the butt with a rubber hammer. This forces the axe head to seat deeper into the handle, so it won't come flying off if you ever use it. Unless you're just using it for wall decorating
