This retcon creates a massive plot hole for the series. Goku was originally sent to earth to wipe out it's population so the Saiyans could sell the planet. If Goku was sent to Earth now to escape from Frieza then Raditz never would have came to Earth to check on Kakarot's progress. Raditz never would have told Nappa and Vegeta about the dragon balls and Dragon Ball Z never would have happened.

Original Bardock: Portrayed Sayains perfectly as they were made to be violent, aggressive, and loved fighting Minus Bardock: Caring and the complete opposite of the saiyans that were portayed (except Goku because of his head) In my own opinion prefer the bardock special wayyyy better

Classic Bardock is the only version that I’ll accept, however if they keep some of his old personality intact and his rebellion against Freiza then I can live with this change.

Both look good but I prefer the old Bardock, he looks cooler and more like a true sayian warrior

My biggest gripe with Minus is that it doesn't just retcon the manga but it undercuts everything Goku has ever achieved. It literally turns his origin into Superman. Which is funny because Toriyama said he didn't like how the anime portrayed Goku as too heroic but you turn his origin into the man that is all truth and justice everywhere. Instead of Goku being sent to earth to destroy it he was sent there to live a peaceful life. Then there's the fact that roshi CLEARLY said that Gohan found a BABY in the wilderness. Does Goku look like a baby in that scene? Or how about the fact that Gine says "I'll tell raditz what's going on" that clearly doesn't happen now does it. Thematically DB should have ended years ago.

My main bone to pick with modern bardock is his appearance he basically looks like Goku with Saiyan armor and a scar on his cheek when as to the older movies/specials with bardock in the past he was unique and he clearly wasn't just a copy and paste of Goku with a few minor detail difference I'm getting the vibe that the complete opposite is being approached here

Bardock's story was a damn near perfect prequel to the series.

The reason why we LOOOVE Bardock (My fave character btw) is how despite all the odds and his own people dissing him, he gave no fk and still tried to change the future. Also his red bandana (color literally made from his own blood AND his comrade's blood) is what defines Bardock as a character, It is such an important tool to the character (like kid goku with nimbus and power pole) and they decided to take THAT out. I'm like WHAT!! WHYYY

Dragon Ball Super Retcon. That's basically all that Super seems to be. A giant retcon and I would imagine when Super comes back, they're going to act like it's been this way the whole time and Goku knew his father. This kind of shit really ruins the integrity of the story. People like when something has a lore, it makes it easier to suspend your disbelief and invest in the story.

Despite Dragon Ball not having a super complex story: OG Bardock's story is about a warrior whose race is controlled by a Tyrant, with a will to change it all. Later, when he gets the power to observe the outcome of his actions, he attempts to change fate in honor of his fallen team mates, who died by their tyrant's actions. In the end, Bardock realizes his efforts were futile and the demise of his planet was set in stone. Moments before accepting that fate, he witnesses a vision of his son facing the ruler doomed his people. Bardock smiles as he shouts his son's name. DBS Bardock is about a family man who cares for his wife and son and only wishes the best for him, and, as a last wish, hopes his son can change his race's course. I made my choice ;)

The clips you sent from the Broly trailer also retcon something else: In Dragon Ball Z, Super, and the original Dragonball manga, planet Vegeta is red from space. But in the Broly trailer is looks teal like Namek.

I actually didn't know Toriyama put a scene from the Bardock film into his manga. For a long time I just thought Bardock was an anime-only character. That's actually super interesting. I've heard a LOT of people saying none of this was a retcon because it was never in the manga, but cool to see it actually was!

I don't understand why Toriyama want to change now what he established for Saiyans in the first place. It's supposed that Saiyans were a brutal race who live in a brutal society where even the kids are used as soldiers because they tend to be violent even as babys. So they were the opposite of "good guys". In fact Goku was just like that and only change his temper due to a strong hit in the head. In that context, it has all sense that Bardock were a violent random guy in King Vegeta army. But now, Goku's father is something like a scientist, a family guy and a beloved husband/father, who only wants to protect his family. Come on, even Raditz wanted to kill Goku for not being what a Saiyan must be. It has no fucking sense. And the worst thing, it is something that somehow ruin Goku's own arc, because it's the story of guy who is destinied to destroy the Earth and the human race but became its greatest champion, and even is capable to change the evilest enemies thanks his honor, honesty and nobility. Toriyama doesn't read his own fucking manga and doesn't even care about it.

Let's be honest, the only characters we can be sure he'll never forget about are Goku and Vegeta, the rest always have a possibility of being victims of forgetfulness.

The thing with DB Minus is a common problem that many shows have: Toriyama just isnt the genius many people think. He can´t write and the true brains are the editors working in the background. I mean compare him to Eiichirō Oda for example, who has a completely clear vision of his story and all the characters in it. Toriyama just ignores and changes things in his own work like he wants. its annoying. For me he had his climax from the king piccolo arc in original DB until the cell arc in Z. The rest was.......

Has anyone considered the possibility toriyama mat be combining the cannons? Like, after sending Goku off, Bardock gets the armor and bandana that we're used to--at least the color of the armor. Then we see the destruction of Vegeta play out like we know. I also believe the planet we saw get destroyed in the trailer was a test run; a planet he was destroying to be sure of its destructive power. To clarify, when Frieza would actually destroy Vegeta, I assume he'd get the armor he wears in every flashback so far. I'm saying both Bardock _and_ Frieza could end up being what we remember. Edit: Alright pals, just so we're clear, I've read Dragon Ball Minus. What I'm saying is if he's going to be altering a few things from Minus anyway to accommodate for Broly, then that would be the best time to integrate elements from the Bardock special into Minus through the Movie. That way continuity is somewhat restored and the fandom is happy.

I still like the idea that warriors like Kakarott, Bardock, and Turles were so low class and common that they share the same face. There's legitimately nothing special about them outside of their actions which makes them who they are.

There is a pretty simple solution to all of this.......The events of Super and the subsequent movies cannot considered part of the original canon. They are their own continuity. Thus Super, nor the movies, can be considered the official follow up, nor be in the same continuity of the original DB manga nor anime. I've been saying this for a while.

The way I see it. Toriyama is the professor who changed his syllabus 3 weeks into the semester and we are the students complaining about an early exam

I respect Toriyama and all the work that he has done but from a long term story telling point of view it is best to maintain the continuity through out the entirety of the series and Toriyama cannot seem to do that. Toriyama has a right as the creator of the series to make changes but he should at least explain the changes and the reasons for them to the fans of the series. Maybe some of the content happens in a different timeline and in that timeline things happen differently or in a different reality.

A few points to consider and bear in mind: 1 - Regarding Vegeta's age. Yes we see a shot of Vegeta in a pod, and also a shot of Goku in a pod. HOWEVER, we do not know when these shots happen in relation to each other. E.g. the shot of Vegeta could have been some years before the shot of Goku - if that makes sense. Also, if this story is indeed based on the details of DB minus, then we know for a FACT that Vegeta is at least somewhat older than Goku, as we see him and Raditz off on a distant planet. 2 - Goku's baby status retconned. I don't think this is retconned. In a lot of circles, 3-year-olds are still considered as babies, so I think this one's a non-issue. 3 - Regarding the rebellion or lack thereof. Neither in the DB minus manga, nor in the trailer, do we see what happens after Goku is sent off into space. We don't know what Bardock does after, we don't know if he starts a rebellion, because the manga ends just after Goku is sent off. Yes, it says "A short while later, planet Vegeta was vapourised", but a lot can happen in a "short while", ESPECIALLY in anime / manga e.g. a war against Freeza ensues, Bardock and his comrades fight, Bardock loses his comrades, he gets his blood bandana, he goes to challenge Freeza, utterly loses, THEN planet destruction. 4 - When Freeza destroys the planet, there's no rebellion. First of all, in the Bardock special, it's only Bardock that goes to rebel, so there won't be a crowd anyway (other than Freeza's soldiers). Second, the re-telling from DBS, of when Freeza destroyed the planet does still show a crowd of Freeza's soldiers, as they were in the Bardock special - just because Bardock wasn't a focus in that flashback, doesn't mean he wasn't there. Third - The shot from the trailer of Freeza destroying the planet... are we 100% sure that's Planet Vegeta? Could be a different planet he destroys prior to going to Planet Vegeta. Just Saiyan... :D Though my expectations of all this are low - in terms of the Bardock special story being maintained, it IS something to note. Let's not assume everything based on a trailer. There's a lot we still do not know.

I don't like DBMinus because it's not even a story. It's like a cliffnotes version of a story. -Frieza calls the Saiyans to Planet Vegeta. -Bardock and his wife thinks something is fishy, and send off their son to protect him. That's it. That's the entirety of Minus. No conflict is resolved, no character is developed, nothing. It's just fanservice for fanservice's sake. We have 16 pages of essentially nothing. Toriyama wastes time showing stuff like kid Vegeta and Raditz instead of actually trying to tell a story. Plus, it makes Goku too special. I enjoyed that Goku was supposed to be a conqueror, but ended up being a savior through sheer luck. His dad was a nobody with the highlight of his life being him personally finding out what a Supernova feels like. Frieza only remembers him as "that monkey who was in the way", and even then, just barely. He could have been replaced by any other Saiyan and the story would have ended the exact same way. But now, both of his parents were special snowflakes that were actually gave a shit about their kid, and found out about Frieza's betrayal though essentially a gut feeling. We don't see them figure out what Frieza plans to do, or why they dislike him so much in the first place; they're like that from the start. Finally, I don't like it because it means Raditz was wrong about everything he said except for Goku being a Saiyan and him being Goku's brother, and even that last part is starting to seem a little suspect. -Planet killed by a meteor: False! -Sent to Earth to destroy it: Nope! Gine says she was going to warn Raditz, but I guess that transmission never reached him. So due to them not telling Raditz anything for one reason or another, he lives his life knowing absolutely jack shit, and ends up getting killed by his own kid brother because of it. Also, if Raditz is Goku's older brother, raised by the parental anomalies that are Bardock and Gine, why is he such an absolute prick when he arrived on earth? It's sad that Toriyama's take on the character was relegated to a 16 page chapter in the tail end of an actually good manga. If he really wanted to tell a story about the character, he should have just made a standalone prequel similar to Jaco that followed Bardock in his last few days before his confrontation with Frieza. TL;DR Minus is an inferior replacement for Father of Goku that cares more about fanservice than it does telling an actual story.
