I would think about cutting away the under side of the gunnel leaving the finished top surface in tact. Pull the rotted wood. Then build the underside back up to solid, up to the top skin. Probably a lot of awkward position work. Would be less finish work than rebuilding from the top of the gunnel.

Owner of a 1988 Grady White. Wood rot is a big issue in any make older boat, transom the biggest. Next is wiring -- I finely ripped it all out and started over -- should have done that in the very beginning. Next biggest issue is fuel lines, like wiring just rip it out and start over. Don't buy gray Marpac fuel lines, get the good black stuff. Next is all the onlookers at the gas station telling you what a great looking boat you have and wanting to know all about it. If you can turn a wrench and have the time I highly recommend it. PLUS - have you looked at the price of new boats these days!!
@Superjetjim
@Superjetjim 3 года назад
Why would you not go in from underneath on the back side of the deck cap and remove the glass / wood - that way leaving the surface deck finish untouched and in original condition, substantially reducing the labour cost / effort. Then you could glass in a new piece of board from underneath replacing the rotten wood. Similar to repair you just did, but replacing the rot. Quick easy and simple? 👍🏻
@kennyvelez8060
@kennyvelez8060 3 года назад
That is my question exactly, and if it is a removable cap why not remove it flip it over and cut the underneath out so it can be cleaned out and prept for wood/corsa board and reglassed, I've done that on several boats you need a big enough flat surface like in a pinch the ground or a driveway or shop floor,
@robertp7209
@robertp7209 3 года назад
One would have to work laying on your back upside down. Not easy, but the glass can be cut readily, and since the wood is rotted it would basically fall out. Then prep the underside of the top skin. Bond in a new board, then glass over the bottom. And paint. A lot of work compared to how they did the temp. Fix. Times two, port and starboard.

I should have read the comments. This was my question too. Without youtube, I would have approached it this way doing the repair myself (with no experience doing such repairs).
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 3 года назад
It all depends on the time you want to put into it. Removing the cap requires removing the rubrail, unscrewing the cap, separating it, having help to get it off the boat and set up. Then the repair will be quick and easy, but then you've gotta put it back. If you don't remove the cap you've gotta work upside down grinding in a tight spot, then building braces to push the core up when you adhere it. Then glassing upside down :/ Just non-skidding it means you can cut it out just standing there, and dig out the wood and reglass it. So it's quicker that way, but yeah, you loose that topside similarity with the rest of the boat and you will have fresh paint on the sides of the tops of the gunwales. We've been thinking of doing foam on the floor so we might get rid of the top cap texture in the end anyway, since theres no need in matching it :)

@@BornAgainBoating couldn’t you do the repair from the top and reinstall a sheet of antiskid with the same patern on top? Would cost more $ and time but have a much better result. At least you replaced all fasteners by SS right?

I drilled, what seemed like a thousand holes and filled them with epoxy instead of replacing the wood...fortunately...it was all topside...lucky me!! Another entertaining video!

I just picked up an 88 pursuit 2200 cuddy cabin boat. Doing little things on it here and there. After taking it out a few times I started taking on water, and I did some poking and prodding, appeared the garboard plug adapter was super loose, and someone used regular clear silicone to try fix it. Electrical issues up the wazoo and hydraulic helm problems. All in all I enjoy the boat and enjoy tinkering with it.

As a person in the design engineering business, I would advise the client that I do not do " mickey mouse " type work. The only way to do professional level work for this problem is to take a dremel cutting disc and cut the bottom of the wood pocket out and completely clean the rotten wood out. You can do this with the boat sitting upright. The cutting line should be the underside shoulders of the wood pocket. After epoxying the cousa board in place, the glassing application would be a little more tricky, but could be done. Sometimes clients appreciate the truth and will pay for good work.- if they don't, send them to the tape & baling wire guy across town.

I'm in the Mickey Mouse Club as well. I've got a '78 Sundance jetboat. One afternoon out on the river, I gave my throttle pedal a good stab, and the whole thing tore out of the floor. I had to gut the interior and replace the floor and carpet. I didnt have the means to reglass the floor in, so i cut the wood panels to fit in front of the engine rails. Used a all weather adhesive on the edges and turned out pretty solid. It only added 3/4" to the height of the rear seat which still stayed beneath the side of the cockpit. So..problem solved.

First, thanks for all the great videos you put out! Another possibility, since you had such good access below, is to cut out the bottom coring, mix peanut butter and adhere coring wood and glass, OR attach the starboard directly underneath the top skin, basically replacing the coring with starboard. With the latter, you use the same amount of starboard as in the video, you just remove the floppy, hollow stuff between the top and bottom. This is just a thought, but everybody wants to be a armchair quarterback, don't they? Post your own videos, if you are so smart! Thanks again for your awesome series of videos!

My anchor hatch detached from rotted wood where the hinge screws attached it. I ended up using two part epoxy and injecting it into the screw holes and cracks and re attaching the piece of wood that came off with the hinges. It feels pretty solid now and I have added more epoxy to encase the wood. It's a temporary fix but it's turning out to be better than I thought it would.

Another option would be to add the coosa like in the vid sealing the holes from underneath during the mounting. Then pour in a resin that will set in wet wood. There are a few different choices. Then re-drill and mount the holders. Same as you would on an old wood boat.

What would have been the best way to seal those original holes when the rod holders were installed to prevent this from happening in the first place? When I replaced the cup holders in my gunnels with rod/cup holders there was nothing sealing the wood and I tried to put 4200 on it to seal it and it did not make a good seal, I'm thinking I should go back and make sure it is sealed based on this video. Can you make a video on how to fix stripped out screw holes? Every hinge on my 23’ angler is stripped out on the lid side and the hull side. Of course there is no way to access the under side for the screw holes on the hull side. I’m at a loss at what to do! I drimmeled out the holes a little and used marine Tex, drilled a new pilot hole and reattached the hinges. Worked great until I got out the inlet. Now I’m back in the same situation. Please help! Any an all advice is greatly appreciated!

I had 4- 1/4 bolt holes in the “stringer Grid” from where a fuel tank was through bolted onto. I didn’t cover them or fill them while I left the boat sit for a while. Unfortunately a few leaves covered my drain plug hole and the water filled up in the hull past these holes. I vacuumed the water out using a wet vacuum and airline tubing. The boat’s hull is bonded to the stringer grid and not accessible. Fortunately there is no wood construction in the boat just encapsulated high density foam construction. I am curious what would come out if I made A few drill holes in the hull but not sure if my technique of filling the holes would last forever. I think I would use a chamfered hole and then refill with thickened West Six10 epoxy filler. People don’t leave holes and think water won’t get high. My boat was on a trailer and got swamped.

@elianselmi4099

I'd go with a 150 or 175, but look at the max horsepower rating for your hull is . Should be a plate on the transom somewhere
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 3 года назад
Yeah, I'd look at the plate and go with the biggest engine you can put on it lol But before you pull the trigger, take check the weight of the new engine and compare it to the old engine. Then take your boat and add whatever weight difference you have to the back, be it a cooler, a battery, whatever to get it close to that weight, and make sure the boat doesn't have an adverse affect with the added weight. Usually common when going up in HP and going from 2 stroke to 4 stroke.

Maycrafts are pretty solid little boats. I have a 1994 17' Maycraft CC that I bought brand new and fish out of a few times a week for 8 months out of the year. Anyways to get to your question my buddu has a 19' Maycraft and he currently has a yamaha 115hp 4 stroke on it that does pretty good but his boat is rated for up to 150 hp. I actually looked into the Maycraft 20 footers some years back and most of the ones I saw had 150hp 4 strokes but were rated for up to 200hp just not sure you really need that much. I would think a 150hp is probably sufficient or a 175hp if you really want to move.

My small boat....16' v hulll smoker craft, just rebuilt the entire subfloor, added a casting deck, and an aft bench...turned out great. Still having an issue though with it, maybe you have some insight for me ... I've tried playing with engine height, and trim angle, and checked hull for cupping. From neutral to 3/4 throttle it rides great, but once I fully plane out, it rides bow heavy. My engine RPMs are about 5100 WOT and max is 5500 (98 Yamaha 25 2 stroke) and the transom has some warping and flexes a bit under full load (will be replacing this winter)...do you think these two issues could be affecting how the boat planes out? And for the record I know that the additional weight on the bow doesn't help, but even before I built it, it still rode a bit bow heavy, it's just worse ...thanks! Love the channel!
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 3 года назад
Yeah, that transom flex probably plays a lot into the issue. But the bow heavyness was in the hull design before, and now with the added wieght it is more profound. Not much you can do about that, because usually with enough power you can trim up the engine and get the bow to lift up, you could try adding weight to the back and see if that helps, that might be the only solution. If you sit in the back of the boat or have someone sit back there does it change the ride? If it does you could add weight, moving batteries or water tank or livewell or repower with a heavier engine ;) lol

@BornAgainBoating 3 года назад
I'd probably pull the cap if doing it from the bottom, just fiberglassing and cutting out while being upside down with the glass coming down on your face, nah, not for me lol :)

Great video, thanks for your effort. Couldn’t you just try to remove the core from underneath, replace it and glass coosa in. That way you don’t have to work with anti slip and you wouldn’t have to restore the finish or color match anything. Just glass and paint or gelcoat
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 3 года назад
You could, but glassing upside down can be a nightmare! Almost worth the extra time to just pull the cap if you wanted to do it from the bottom

Could you make a video on how to work with like 5200 or 4200 or any kind of sealant when resealing like the rod holder you did in the video how do you make it look clean.

Just allow it to smush out and then spray it down with a cheap degreaser, then wipe it off with the degreaser :)

When you use 3M 4200 you clean up the "squeeze out" with a spray bottle and rag... please could you let us know what is in that bottle?? Assuming it wont effect the leftover 4200 from curing.

So problem is the previous owner being lazy. Solution is being lazy once again... :p Just go in from below and cut the glass in one piece. The replace the wood and glue the fiberglass piece back. Simple and much better :)

I totally rebuilt an old 20’ 73 seacraft with the narrow gunnels. I removed the rub rail and cut about 12’ of the top of the gunnels off. I split them down the middle and widened them by epoxying a piece of 3/4 plywood to the bottom and glassing it in. I cut out the solid glass panel below and created a recess like your ocean master.
@billwallenstein3387
@billwallenstein3387 3 года назад
I then wrapped the gunnels around the back of the boat about 12” wide to close in the transom like you started. I would just built the part upside down and add it to the ocean master

I noticed my engine bracket pulling away from the transom and the two upper bolts inside pulling into the fiberglass. I'm about to Mickey Mouse it with a half inch aluminum backing plate until I feel like doing some fiberglass repair and digging into the transom to see what other problems arise.
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 3 года назад
Yeah, lots of people do that and it works for awhile, had to do that on our old Wellcraft and it lasted about 3 years before we had to do the transom :). Just don't let it go for too long lol I've seen twin 225's rip an aluminum plate of the back of a boat where the transom rotted out around the plate, both engines went down in about 15 feet of water! Crazy stuff.
