Hopefully Jack Stavris likes this video! Also, you can all feel free to count how many times I say "um" or repeat myself in the video! :P
Anyway, this is a video where I talk about my old ThinkPad R51 laptop, which was made over 11 years ago. After being used by my sister for years, it was passed down to me when she upgraded to a MacBook. I've fixed it up, made a few upgrades, and now have a nice little laptop to bring with me to school. I have a much more capable MacBook that I could use for my everyday work, but this ThinkPad, despite being older and slower, is much more versatile for my needs. It is built like a tank, and unlike most newer laptops has a proper keyboard, rather than the stupid chicklet keys that are on everything now. Having the hot-swappable UltraBay is a nice bonus, and in the end this is still a great computer for me, and can do just about anything I need it to. I still have the MacBook for video editing and heavier web browsing, but I have to hand it to this 11 year old hardware for still keeping up. My only concern is that this is one of the ThinkPads with the faulty ATI graphics chips that are known to fail, but so far mine has not given me any issues.

Best laptop ever. 40gb hdd, that 1024x768. Beast cpu. Excellent trackpad with buttons and keyboard. Miss it a lot. Win xp ran like a dream on there. Very minimal bugs with the ibm tools compared to today

@Mr Burns nah, it wasn't weak. The pentium m was using pentium 3 architecture, which beasted everything else at the time. Ran GTA san andreas better than even some much later i3 laptop i had. 40gb on windows xp in 2005 is comparable to a 256 or even 512 laptop of today

I use an R51 too. Electronics wise it has zero problems. The only problem I had was the left hinge which got broken. That happened because I was using it very frequently but still, one has to be careful because the display is big and heavy. Fortunately, I 've found new hinges for abot $10 and replaced them. It's in mint condition again.

Have you already purchased it or not? If not I highly recommend going for a T60/T61, they can be found for around the same price and will be far more useable for day to day tasks due to using a Core 2 Duo processor instead of a Pentium M, and supporting up to 4 GB of RAM instead of just 2.

i already bought it but i got it for a good price and i will be maxing it out with a 2.00 ghz pentium m and 2gb of ram

Great Computer! I also had one from Summer 2004 on... I really think about re-acquiring me one, as i crushed mine and gave it to the neighbour's bin, to get some hexes from years of computing off ... XD ThinkPadR51-UseR!

Typical cable ethernet connections like RoadRunner are limited to 20 Mbps -- 50 Mbps at the very most -- so I doubt you'll see any difference switching from 802.11g to 802.11n. WiFi is normally much slower than straight cable. In addition, I've found that for regular web browsing, 5Mbps is as fast as it gets. Dirty little secret: browsing is different from what you get downloading large files, or for internet "speed tests." Most people only need >5Mbps if they run multiple hi-res videos at the same time. Pulling up a dozen windows doesn't cause a problem, unless you're short on RAM. You click on a link with lots of busy images, like Amazon, and POOF, display fills with data. Speed never gets over 5Mbps. 802.11b maxes out at ~11Mbps, and you get a ROCK SOLID connection. Higher letters in the alphabet waste a lot of bandwidth "roaming" to find more networks -- even if you're perfectly happy where you are. Programmers have to justify their existence, so they're always inventing new whiz-bang "standards." R51 was my main squeeze laptop for several years. Loved that thing. Better touchpad than I've ever had since, and WiFi was GREAT. Could drive around town and get connected almost anywhere. People were much less cautious about security back in the day. ;}

I know you said the motherboard on your R51 kicked the bucket but in regards to putting a SSD in the machine there might be a way to do so. If the ultra bay which you put a battery in has a sata slimline connection then there are drive caddy conversions that allow you to convert optical bays on a lot of laptops to subsequently take an extra hard drive in place of the optical drive itself. If that R51 has a standard sata slimline connection then you could have simply gotten a drive caddy converter and put a SSD in the machine that way. Albeit at the expense of no longer being able to use the ultra bay battery you bought for it and it almost certainly would have operated at sata 1 or maybe sata 2 speeds at best. But in any case you could have possibly put a SSD in the machine that way and at the very least got the machine running on a modern drive with all of the speed that the boards generation of sata connection could give you. Granted it's a moot point seeing how the board died. But in any case if you ever do get around to resurrecting the machine again you might be able to put a SSD in it after all if the ultra bay has standardized sata slimline connections like most enterprise/business class Dell's old enough to have optical drives do. Just thought I'd pass along that tip to try if the machine ever see's life again.

Dude this PC has IDE not SATA so SATA SSDs are harder to install its not a core 2 duo its a Pentium M on the other hand, You could buy IDE SSDs But those are so fucking hard to find and 3 I don't understand any words you said in your comment and 3.1, no SATA II ODD bay w/ HDD tray (HDD ULTRABAY CADDY) because it has an IDE connector YOU ARE FUCKING STUCK IN FUCKING 2012!!!!!!!!

if you still have this laptop you can try installing windows 10 becose it need less ghz and ram too. and windows 10 finds drivers automaticly for everything

The motherboard on this died recently. Even so I still think these old Pentium M’s are just too old for modern use.

@@SebisRandomTech I also got this device and tried Raspberry Pi OS Desktop. It has the 1.5GHz Pentium M, 2x 512mb of ram and 160gb hdd with 8mb cache. For light usage like writing texts, listening to music, playing light 2d games etc it is still fine. I also tried browsing and watching and streaming videos. Playing local videos (from usb stick) works fine, RU-vid up to 480p also works fine if you are patient with the loading time at the beginning. Browsing lighter sites like Wikipedia or Forums it is okay, I would recommend an ad blocker and noscript or something like that. I would not recommend using it like that but it works. I will install Windows XP or Windows 98. The extended battery from 2008 still lasts 3 hours and it seems very reliable. Just cleaned it and applied new thermal paste :)

Hi. Could you by any chance share the Megaman wallpaper? Love you videos. Wish the market/trade was as easy in my country.

Hello, nice laptop and nice video! like and suscribed. I only need this laptop to play on native operating sistem my olds 90s and 2000s PC RTS games . Where to get a Service Pack 3 1024 version? Is XP SP3 the better and faster Operating Sistem for this IBM R51? Is faster whit a SSD and IDE adapter? Thanks

Try softpedis or you can get a cd on eBay for SP3, very inexpensive. SP3 is a must for this.. I'd cut back to a 60g. It's faster and more reliable. Add Jetclean from MajorGeeks, free and use with CCleaner

The drive used in this laptop is an ide laptop drive and you will need a proper adapter to install a msata drive but I don’t recommend it for windows 7 but for windows xp it should be fine. Haven’t actually tried my adapter on this model of laptop yet but on my dell d610 these are the results I get. I’ve only had my thinkpad working for about a day after finally buying a charger since I got the laptop for free and it didn’t come with one.
