Here is some very rare cine film of the Allenton and Osmaston areas of Derby in snow filmed in January 1965 by then local resident Dave Upton.
I would like to thank Dave Upton for allowing me to share this footage with the world.
PLEASE leave comments and memories if you enjoyed this footage. I don't know about you but I could watch this type of old local footage all day.
The driving footage was filmed from an Austin 10 van
Information about the locations in this video:
0:12 Here we see a shot of Osmaston Road (I think)
0:25 The Mitre Island (Where the Spider bridge is located today)
0:35 Closer view of the Mitre Island
0:42 Nice shot of the Mitre Hotel (built in 1930). You can also see Allenton Market in the background to the left of the pub.
0:47 Driving along Osmaston Road from the Mitre Island.
1:04 On the left is a post box and red phone box, The post box is still there today and the red phone box has been replaced with a modern glass one.
On the right is the turning for Ascot Drive.
1:07 On the left is a Trolley Bus picking up passengers.
1:47 On the left is Abingdon Street.
1:56 On the left is Cotton Lane.

I lived in Chellaston at the time of the film, and remember all those streets so well. Worked at Royce's B Site and Main Works. Trolley buses, I miss those.

I think that the first shot was Osmaston Road, somewhere near Allen St/Cheshire St looking South towards Chellaston. There use to be a terminus here by a paper shop (did a paper round there in the late fifties!) where one of the buses (60 or 66) turned back towards Derby whilst the other went on to Shelton Lock before turning round. Derby was a great place in the Sixties, plenty to do, plenty of work, most pubs had live bands at weekends. Left four years ago!

I moved to Derby in March 1965,got digs in Duffield Rd on the first day on arrival, next day got a job in Take and Pay on Ascot Drive, met met my first girlfriend at work, Stephanie lived in Cheleston, I was only 16 years old, went to work every morning on the trolley bus along London Road, Derby was a fantastic place in those times and I was the happiest boy in the world

Great film, look at them-Thames Trader Tippers, Ford Thames vans, Atlas vans, looked like a Triumph Herald Convertible and many more, it has to be the 1960’s!.

The metal sign you see in the first few seconds pointed to a wooden foot bridge that you could use to get onto Ascot drive. It went over the railway lines.

That was a treat! I'd be 16 and might have been on my bike along there somewhere, from Alvaston. Those trolley busses were dangerous, being so quiet. I knew a kid who had his foot taken off while waiting with his back turned to one. It was fun when a pole came off the wires, though, the conductor would slide another pole out from inside the bus and have top try and catch it.

Very interesting video. The Mitre looked a decent pub back then. Unlike the drug dealers den it became. A lot of folk in Derby were glad it was demolished.

Thanks for posting this, I was about 11 at the time and could have probably been on one of the buses filmed. I used to go into Daves Cafe at the bottom of Cotton Lane with a lot of builders about 8 years or so later, one of the joiners Ron Keelings wife used to work there. Thanks again, brill to see :-)

I remember the Trolley bus poles and wires being taken down. Some of the poles were used in Shardlow Marina BTW. We lived a little North of here, just off Harvey Road - I remember being able to see the sparks from the trolley buses pantographs from my parent's bedroom window. Does anyone remember a shop in Allenton called Borthwicks? I am starting to think I made it up....

Look carefully on the right at about 1.25 and there is a trolley bus turning on the turning-circle at the end of Nightingale Road; this still exists, over 40 years after the trolleys ceased to run. What surprised me was how many trolleys are passed heading outwards to Shelton Lock, so does anyone know if the journey was filmed in one go, or is it the record of a number of trips joined together?
@grumpyoldman47

Not sure about the number, but its opposite the building with the "Mansell" sign if you look at Google maps (its got a taxi parked in it if you look at Street View!)

@grumpyoldman47 Yes I see it, Is that where today there is a small loop on Osmaston Road, opposite number 548. I did not know that was a turning circle. Yes this film was all done on one day.

How come people are still getting around ok ? Today they would be calling the Army out and the Country would be at a standstill . we`ve gone bloody soft.

@MrTedwise Yes I think these days people just use it as an excuse for not being able to get to work even though in times past the snow really was bad.
