The people complaining about him pausing the music, need to grow up. If they want to experience it without stops then they should just listen to the original song lol. Question for you: can time signatures change within a single song? One of my professors argued with me that they can't while reviewing my paper on Tool. It's been a few years since I took that class but that argument still gets me a bit heated...but I never figured out who was correct.
@KingOfCheezWiz
@KingOfCheezWiz 3 года назад
@@meganwoehl5277 as far as I have ever been taught, or have even read on a sheet of music, time signatures can and do change in music. If your professor was arguing that as long as the subdivision doesn't change, the amount of down beats per measure doesn't matter if you aren't counting by numbers in your head, I can kinda understand their point. I had a director once who used variants of like "du-da-de" instead of thinking "trip-el-ett" for triplets, he used "du" for 1,2,3,4 and "da" for the off beat or "and." To a person counting phonetically like that, it wouldn't really matter how many beats per measure, thus time signatures don't change. But I'm still scratching my head as to why a professor would imply that time signatures do not change.

your analyiss of the meter was instantly correct. It is 5/8 7/8 5/8 7/8 during the verses, and 6/8 in the pre-chorus, and then 12/8 in the chorus. The idea is that the hypermeter of 12/8 is broken up, or "schismed" during the verses. Because "I know the pieces fit, 'cause I watched them fall away."

Adam Jones is an artist by trade and worked in a special effects studio in Hollywood before TOOL formed as a band; he worked on Terminator ll, Jurassic Park ll, and other films. Adam is the one who is responsible for making all of TOOL's videos and I believe that the uniqueness of his guitar compositions come directly from his filmic and artistic skills. He approaches music like a true artist, in addition to it as a musician. Adam is an extraordinary tasteful guitarist and all the band members are very tasteful musicians.

Most of their albums are written like symphonies. They (especially Justin, the bassist) even refer to the separate songs as ”movements” instead of songs. That's one reason you're hearing similarities in key and meter combinations. Lots of 5s and 6s in this album. You'll hear lots of 7s in Fear innoculum (thus the spelling of the epic track 7empest). These guys are a modern music phenomenon. I've watched them live many times and each time has been the greatest thing I've ever witnessed. Lol. There are moment in each concert I've been to where I've almost had the out of body sensation enough to look around and see everyone who was screaming and jumping just moments before, all standing with their jaws agape and eyes wide consuming the moment as if it were the breathe of life. Music has much more power than humans understand. It's almost a ”religious” experience seeing Tool live. As a musician you find yourself dumbfounded that these 4 guys and only 3 instruments (not counting Maynards angelic voice and profound lyrics of the collective human experience) can create the sounds that you are hearing. **Most of the over dubbed/produced effects you hear on the albums are easily done by Justin on bass with his ridiculous rig and pedal skills, or Adam, OR Danny. Maynard will have a keyboard set up to fill in effects that might be needed. Adam (the guitarist) is also a movie special effects artist and is usually the creator of those trippy videos 😁 For this particular Album (aka symphony) they began working with the artist Alex Grey and their music and his art work have been synonymous ever since ❤️
