Your input is so interesting and really unlocks a hidden chapter of the music. It's almost like watching a DVD commentary and getting into the mind of the director, even though you didn't make the music you understand so much about the beauty of it all and it really shows in your comments. @@KeyOfGeebz I agree so much, hearing your insights into the music brings out and exposes a whole new layer of appreciation for the artistry that went in to these songs, and seeing your passion and emotion for it really connects. I think it would be really cool to see you do maybe a follow up video to some of your reactions to certain songs you found really moving or special where you do more of a deep dive into the composition and music theory behind what is going on. I know you already do a lot but it could be a really neat long term project where you select songs with really unique or interesting elements and really break them down, I think it would be so cool.

I saw Tool during the 10,000 Days tour at a partially covered outdoor venue in Toronto (Molson Amphitheatre). Fun Fact about the song: Its not just about the loss of his mother, but also with his struggle with religion and his acceptance of his mother's faith, even though Maynard has often been quoted as blaming god and religion for his mother's suffering and death, but in this song he's kinda like "no one has ever deserved to fly to heaven like my mother has (she was a "good Christian" and good person), even though I don't believe in it, it was an integral part of her life." But he also has this undertone of contempt because he knows his mother isn't going to where she worked so hard to go to. at least in his mind. Hope this is informative! Such an amazing, visceral, song.

Ugh especially during the slow building crescendo at 25:30 saying "youre the only one who can hold your head up high/ shake your fists at the gates and say/ Ive come home now ..... / it's my time now / give me my wings!" I've been lucky enough to see them do this song live. It was the last song before an almost 30 minute intermission. Maynard finished the song and had to sit down afterwards and while his back was to the audience, we could tell he was weeping. Each of the band members came over and sat with him one at a time. Couldn't tell if it was Adam or Justin that put their arm around him to comfort him. This band might have a strange writing method , but they have to be close. Too many musicians these days don't have the capacity to move the listener. I think that's why they take so much time to get things right. I cant wait to see them again. F.U. covid 🤬

@thebendu33
@thebendu33 Год назад
Judith and wings for Mary are definitely linked, both songs are about his mother.
@rolmops883
@rolmops883 Год назад
If there truly are 5 stages, I find all of them in Wings for Mary pt1 and 2. Stuff like "You are the light and the way that they'll only read about" are outbursts of anger directed at all kinds of preachers who will tell you that she's moving on to a better place, while relentlessly opposing even the most passive form of life ending measures, causing his mother to be shackled in the way she was for 30 years. Maynard has been clear on the hatred he feels towards these sorts of religious figures. At the same time, the anger is not directed at his mother. Though he doesn't believe as she did, he clearly hopes for her sake she "was right" so to say. Even if she isn't, he wishes for her to finally get her wings ("you are the only one who can hold your head up high, shake your fists at the gates and say: "I've come home now. It's my time now. Give me my wings". Whether anyone believes in the concept of heaven, Maynard is basically saying: the only person who would be worthy is his mother. More than that, after having spent 10,000 days in the fire, she has earned the right to be angry at heaven itself. Ah well, I reckon many people could write countless essays on these two songs. Personally, all I know is that it feels real, visceral, lived through, and honestly, I rarely can sit through these two songs back to back without getting extremely emotional ever since I lost someone to a shitty, debilitating disease. Nothing is worse than just having to stand idly by, watching someone waste away and realizing there is no more "visiting" them, only a gradual "saying goodbye".

It's like I know for a fact that one day in the future....I will have that experience. I know for a fact it is in my future. But I don't know when. Really disturbing to think about.... And yet, I know I'll listen to this song then, because it will hurt...and heal at the same time. And that is valuable...to know when that day comes, I'll always have this song to help me through it. APC song "Judith" is really the first part of this trilogy. His mothers name was Judith Marie. She was a devout Christian, despite years of paralysis and crippling pain. Maynard of course struggled with this juxtaposition of a faithful woman being pusnished by her supposedly loving god. In Judith we see his anger, then in Marie, after her passing, we see his love. Its an amazing arch.

She was also a devout Christian and lived her life accordingly...but the last 6 months of her life were the various stages of dementia. The frail old woman I saw in bed the day she did (my uncle, mom and I by her side) wasn't my grandmother, and hadn't been for quite a while. I miss her. I'm a 46 year old man that still tears up when thinking about his grandmother...and I hope that never ends.

Thanks so very much for this. My husband died 3 months ago and for the gathering before his cremation I choose Parabola pt1. My husband and I both loved Tool . And although I knew the people gathered didn’t know Tool at all, I could feel the impact of the song. I know it was hard for them, because Tool is cutting deep into most peoples (unconscious) state of being. And at that particular moment nobody moved, they were like frozen in time. When you talk about the listener “adapting” the lyrics to their own life, you really hit the nail on the head - this is fundamentally why they’re called “Tool”. Maynard’s lyrics are so malleable to anyone’s experiences. They’re full of homophones and potential ambiguities that can mold to anyone's experiences in life. I’m legitimately excited for you to continue to dive into the lyrics. I listened to Tool for a good 10 years before really paying attention to Maynard’s words, and now it’s like discovering a whole new world. Keep up the great vids!

Couldn't agree more, and each album is like a movement through a different phase of the "hero's journey" - Opiate is the rebellious youth being hushed, the naïve follower being fed anesthetic lies; the fool. Undertow is the 20something navigating through the pull of a rebellious youth into something greater, and Aenema is a newly adult cleansing of old habits, old ideas, ridding oneself of false idols to thine own self be true. Lateralus is a movement of maturing through the narcissistic tendencies of learning to stand on one's own, to realizing this light is not our own. 10,000 Days carries this through to reaching out for family - treasuring what we have in front of us and past, and realizing a brotherhood in the end: that we are all talking monkeys in Eden with enough to go around. Fear Inoculum is looking at one's own possible end bravely, and beyond, toward the greater miasma of time and history itself.

The thing that I always loved about Tool is that they didn't try to outshine each other. They're a band, not a bunch of solo artists playing together! It's not about how fast they could play or anything like that, it's about what serves the songs the best. Their most technical stuff is still there to make the sound, not show off. Until Fear Inoculum, anyway, which is basically a Danny Carey showpiece.

Adam isn’t the most technical guitarist by any means. But, he has such a different style of playing, both picking and and ways he uses his fret hand. Not to compare him with any other guitarist, but hes similar in a way with tom morello that they’re both ridiculously talented in their own style.

I have heard you mention more than once that you wish you could listen to a song from the perspective of someone who doesn’t understand music the way a composer does. I know you treat the vocals and lyrics as though they are simply another instrument. But to truly enjoy a song without analyzing it so much, you must have an emotional connection. Lyrics can do that. Imagine the song is but a poem. Without lyrics, a poem is nothing. Maybe, you could study the lyrics and the meaning of them, then listen again and only pay attention to the lyrics, like an experiment. When you find yourself analyzing again, recognize that and come back to the lyrics. The musics wraps them like a gift. Allow yourself to get caught up in the pain or the bliss even, of what the song means to you by language only. A poem can bring a person to tears or even change someone’s life. That is the importance and power of lyrics. You can go back to analyzing on the next go-around. I’d hate to see such a talented and great guy as yourself miss out on such a wonderful experience. 💙

It's generally felt that Tool exemplifies the emotion that Zep was trying to achieve, but the zeitgeist that rock and production simply didn't allow, was actually achieved through their interpretation. Production, tonality and effects were in their beginning phases during LZ's composition of this song, where tool was able to take it to a new level that was intended, but not attainable at the time of its original writing. I'm not sure if it's worthy of a compositional breakdown, but certainly worthy of a side-by-side comparison of the construction of someone who understands composition.

Definitely still here. This song moves me so much, and I have not experienced anywhere near the emotional loss that MJK has. But I still FEEL that loss every time I hear this song - true artistry from all four members of this band.

the way the guitar corresponds with Maynard in Part 2 is like an Angel having a low whisper of sympathy to Marie.

These songs hit differently as I now face the end of a chapter and start of a new. I'll soon have to say bye to mother, my only parent. She's fought so much for me and my brother. She helped me at my worst. I will always miss her....

I live in a desert. Rain comes only a few times a year. On occasion, we get a flash floods downpour out of nowhere. These two songs capture that feeling of the storm rolling in and changing your life. The air is very dry in the desert. You don't notice it though, because it is constant. The mid-day heat is oppressive, hitting over a hundred, but at least it's not smothering, being so void of moisture. You notice a shadow looking across the ground, and look up to see darkness enveloping the sun. The relief from its rays is immediate, but you know you need to button everything down. Distant thunder unheard for years in this valley crackles and rolls around the mountains. The wind is picking up, throwing sand everywhere. The first drop taps your face. The smell of dirt kicked up by minute blows of water fills your nostrils. The smell of new life. The thunder gets closer and the torrent starts in earnest. Wind, rain, thunder and lightning whirl around you, tearing up everything. Hail begins, quarter sized ice chunks pelt you all over as you dash for shelter. Trees become dangerous with there flailing limbs breaking, the few that survive in this desolation. They are the highest point besides you out here, and the lightning is followed without delay by thunder now. As you search for better shelter, the cloud makes a funny shape like a funnel. Eh... I'm out of steam. You still here? 'cause I'm still here.

As a Tool fan, of course I'm here at the end, but what I love about your deconstructions is that despite analysing like a painter would into a picture's component parts you can really see how much you love music and how prepared you are to hang up your musical analysis to let some heartfelt lyrics penetrate your soul like they do with the rest of us as fans. And the way it becomes like a gestalt of emotion together with the other instruments. It's great to watch you become a fan along with the rest of us

Make sure to have the correct audio files or else there's a half second skip as the tracks change (cds also work to avoid that) I swear that half second ruins the build up crescendo every time for me

Yeah the music video works too. I had to thumbs down parabol on Pandora ( it hurt to do) because it jumps to another song immediately after the intense ass buildup, and then it's the itch you can't scratch until you listen to the whole thing.

For years, I skipped these tracks when listening through the album. They were boring to me. Then I let it play through. Not sure if I had matured a little, or this music matured me a little, but it felt different at a later part of my life. Keep going Geebz, we're still here listening.

I did the same thing until I forgot to skip one day and without realizing I had the melody in my head. Then I played the album without skipping and actually paid full attention to the songs and was blown away.

I had the same feeling towards these 2 tracks when i first listened to this album, I'd also skip past until about a year or so later I remember really "hearing" them for the first time, getting extreme goosebumps and realizing how powerful this music is. Wings 2 is my fav Tool track I think..

Lateralus is Danny's album, Fear Innoculum is arguably Adam's album, but 10,000 Days is Justin's album. His work on all the tracks is mind-boggling.

I love this reaction as well as all the fan experiences that have been posted. Mine is one that may have been shared by others, but I first saw Tool live in 2007 when they were touring behind the 10,000 Days release. They stopped in my area on 5/12. I knew if they played Wings... it would be an emotional ride live, but I didn't realize the totality of it until they actually did... They got through Wings Part 1, and during the short lull before Wings Part 2, Maynard spoke: "Happy Mother's Day..." May 13, 2007 was Mother's Day. I can't be certain, but I think it was close to midnight at the time. I've never felt such a collective weight in a room before... just otherworldly stuff.

It's like we're teens again listening to this music for the first time with a friend who has never heard before. And we're all just geeking out, vibing; appreciating some quality art; without pretence, without histrionics.
