I thought of saving you some homework on meshuggah so here it is: 1. BLEED is their most famous song due to its groove and all , its got crazy drums (wont give spoilers) and the crazy part is Thomas Haake the drummer of the band had to change his technique to learn this song which he wrote , he took 3 months to learn this song , originally they were not going to do it but somehow they did it and it was the song that blew the band up 10 folds more , its their most important song 2. DEMIURGE is the song i will recommend to snobs who love 4/4 , the band just plays tight rhythyms and breakdowns all along each one heavier than before , everything in 4/4 so it drives through the heart , its foetus-heart relationship like u said xD 3. CLOCKWORKS is the song where they really flex what a monstrous drummer they have who just plays the right notes in the right way while also in the most complex of forms which is a total unreal experience , given the fact that the 2 guitarist are doing such crazzy riffworks so that is why CLOCKWORKS would be a good breakdown I wish you give breakdowns on all 3 of these some day along Few other songs of them which are definitely tight groovy nd famous : RATIONAL GAZE (I like juice , haha , you will get it when u listen to the song), BREAK THOSE BONES WHOSE SINEWS GAVE IT MOTION (4/4 monstrousity ) , DEHUMANIZATION (it has a gorgeous , like a very beautiful breakdown in the outro ) , I (ofc , a classic)... Hehe not gon take more of ur time , I love all the work that you put out peace

Right, as long as they rewind at least 10 seconds when they resume. Some of the natural stopping points in Tool songs often are where something awesome is about to hit or switch. It kills me when they rob themselves of that just because they felt the need to stop and not rewind.

@Loctorak
@Loctorak 3 года назад
@@jek4837 yeah but I think something people need to remember/be mindful of is that music hits everyone differently. So what is a pivotal moment in the song may not hold the same resonance when others hear it. For example I learned how to rap along to walking by ocean wisdom back when it was cool to do that stuff - I did it to this girl hoping to impress her with all the cool flows and funky bars, but the only bit that really seemed to make her smile was this one throwaway line where he makes a family guy reference and says "sucking a titty like giggity giggity" and she really enjoyed that. Forget... you know... the other 1300 words, the switch ups or the insane wordplay. Nope - just giggity. So you can never really say for sure that someone else is robbing themselves of experiencing the same feeling a part gave you, cause in all likelihood it won't give them that feeling, anyway. Besides, he CAN listen to the song again in his own time, if he likes. 😉 I do see why people get upset. I understand it because I feel the same way in certain spots, its like "you fool! You're missing the best bit!" but I generally just push it aside. The other thing I'm here for is a different take than the one I myself had, not just someone to say what I think they should say, and thats something you can only get if you let people have the room to express those thoughts
@jek4837
@jek4837 3 года назад
@@Loctorak Yes, music hits everyone differently. I definitely agree with that, but there are some moments that hit nearly everyone. When you see different people have nearly the same reaction at the same moment in different reaction videos, then those are the moments you wish they shared. That's part of the fun of watching these types of videos :) ! I love seeing someone say they actually got goose bumps or get a huge smile on their face at the exact same times that I did when I first listened. Regardless, he does a fantastic job with these videos!

Also², I think Maynard would agree that the vocals should be treated as one of the instruments, not as something above or more important than the non-voice instruments.

Ok the Grudge is a perfect next step. The buildup of the "story" of that song to the climax is on the same level as this one and laterulus (even though 46 is my personal favorite.) Not to mention at the end Danny transcends his human form and goes ballistic as well as before that one key surprise I won't spoil. If you are gonna do more meshuggah first I'd suggest bleed or clockworks, bleed being one of the most insane endurance songs on drums ever with some crazy polyrhythms (even by Meshuggah standards) and clockworks is ghost note city with a lot of cool time changes throughout the song. Tool is one of the few bands where the bass and drums aren't the only rhythm section of the band. Adam keeps time for Danny, Danny for Justin, and Justin for Adam. It gives each of them more freedom to "come and go" in a song, knowing there's always a way back. You mentioned Maynard's vocals. I've always been impressed by how much faith and confidence he has in his voice. One of the best examples of this is in "Passenger", found on Deftones' 2000 release, 'White Pony.' That one makes my arm hair stand up.
@mikedevenney7986
@mikedevenney7986 3 года назад
That first statement is the coolest thing I've heard someone say about a band. I'm a drummer and can confirm that it happens in bands that play together for a while, especially if they like to drop an extended jam occasionally. Each musician in the band (and the drummer too, hahaha) learns who they can hang onto as they wander away for a little while. I played with a band for 3 or 4 years and by the end we could jam for hours and not get lost. My bassist would nod his head in 4/4 while looking down the whole time he was off noodling some solo bit regardless of what signature he was following in his head. I knew that I could wander a bit myself and follow his head bobs to keep myself grounded and when he was ready to come back up for air his head would come back up, still nodding those 4/4 quarter notes out. Then I'd pull myself back together so he could anchor on me and we'd both hit a nice flourish together to signal to the rest of the band that should pull back together and change it up a bit. Those flourishes made it sound like we had it planned all along. That silent communication (I don't think we ever talked about it, this may be the first time I said it out loud) is the glue that makes being in a band feel like magic sometimes.

One thing to add about Maynard: and this is geeking out even further, is that he sings somewhat chromatically (and the guitar does this as well). Most singers stick to a key or mode and maybe add the odd unnatural note. In this song there’s 3 modes happening all at once which adds amazing tension - push and pull. The guitar is playing in - I always called it East Asian major - but really it’s Phrygian major I think, and adding on that nice 4,3 at the end of the phrase to resolve it. Maynard pretty much ignored that mode and is singing in minor, and switching to mixolydian. He’s really going back and forth between the two modes, but never uses the flat 2 of the Phrygian. He uses that 2, minor third combo and then 4th and major 3rd to resolve the phrase. I don’t know if he just did it by feel or if he’s a theory geek. Either way it’s brilliant and it shaped the way I write music a long time ago. This chromatic playing is nothing new of course but is much more common in classical music. Maynard also does this 2,b3 / 4,3 thing in the chorus of the second track off this album as well. It’s very pleasant to hear. And you’re right that it’s in Celtic music as well. Listen to “I am stretched at your grave” by Dead Can Dance. The vocals in that song do something very similar.

IMO (and it's only that, my opinion) APC is... mmm. How do I explain how much I love Tool and how absolutely intolerably bored I am by APC. There's (as a musician) nothing to talk about with APC. Time signatures are simple 4/4 time and sophomoric. Song written while retaining its pop sensibilities (unlike Tool) is easily forgotten and easily obscured by other bands of their ilk. Judith! Judith is a killer of a song... that's it. There's nothing else interesting to talk about. Rather. Listen to Zeal and Ardor's first 2 albums. You'll weep. You'll leap. They're truly unique. Please... do it.

Maynards only a vocalist. Without the band members in Tool he wouldn’t be Jack. The band as a whole is what makes them. Not just what Maynard touches.. just sayin.

The explanation for the 4-4 signature, lining up with others overlayed, is to liken it to blinkers blinking out of time together while people are stopped waiting at a yellow arrow in their cars. There's a point in time where all of the blinkers will blink in unison once or twice. This is the same as what you're trying to say here.

The way I have tried to explain the "disjointed " time signatures is have you ever been at an intersection with your turn signal on while watching the turn signal of the car in front if you? Well they don't blink at the same time unless you watch long enough, eventually they get closer and closer then will blink 1 or 2 times together, that is what TOOL does all the time masterfuly.

That’s a great way to describe it to a pure listener. The common “technical” term used to describe the point in time when the two different car blinkers align is “resolve”. So if you have two separate (and concurrent) time signatures occurring when they will resolve at a common/shared interval. For the math inclined is basically a common denominator of fractions; but it is not necessarily the lowest common denominator since you are choosing when to resolve with intent when you write music.

Don't start with Art of Dying. If it was new I'd get it, but it's not and it's arguably the best representation of Mario's prowess jammed into one song. I'd start at the beginning or go backwards and take surveys on the albums. They're progression is fun to hear and can be a little disjointed if you cherry pick from the whole collection instead of one album (maybe two).
