HIYA! Here is my interpretation of Sergei Rachmaninoff's legendary Prélude in C-sharp minor, Op. 3 No. 2, played on my old, detuned piano.
This piece was originally written in 1892 by him, and is one of his most famous pieces; During his life as a performer, but also still today. It was so popular that it was referred to as "THE Prélude" (Even though he made 24 Préludes throughout his life), and audiences would demand it as an encore at his performances, shouting "C-sharp!".
It is still played a ton by pianists and students, and widely used in pop-culture. It's legacy lives on.
S. Rachmaninoff is one of my favourite composers of all time. He's both a genius in composition, and a genius in piano-playing. But he also made lots of music for other instruments, such as symphonic or vocal works. All of these are amazing.
If you want to listen to some of the greatest music ever made in the history of humanity, I suggest that you sit back in your couch, get some chocolate milk (or tea), put on your comfy socks, and put on his "Piano Concerto No. 3". You won't regret it! Yes, it's 40 minutes, but during that entire time, it remains interesting, and extremely emotional.
There's a ton of wonderful interpretations on YT, by all kinds of legendary pianists. Way too much to choose from... But you can choose Daniil Trifonov if you have no idea on which video to click. Amazing playing and modern recording quality.
Yuja Wang and Anna Fedorova are great modern alternatives too.
If you want a legendary, older recording, you can listen to Martha Argerich or Vladimir Horowitz, but the recording quality is much lower on these last two.
I played this Prélude on my old, detuned piano.
Around 2015, I started getting really serious about piano playing. I enrolled in a music high-school. My teacher said it was important for me to get an acoustic piano, since I only played on electric piano's. And I agree with this... Even with a "crappy" acoustic piano, you can learn so much things that you cannot learn or feel with an electric piano or synthesizer. But acoustic pianos can easily cost thousands...
We heard about a bar(?) that was going to get demolished(?), and they had this piano there. We got it for free! Right after that, we of course tuned, and renovated it to a certain extend. But it was still quite rough...
As the years progressed, we now got a much better acoustic piano (the white one you can see in my room in some of my recent videos). And we got it second-hand from a friend, so luckily not thousands again LOL!
Very recently, my family wanted to get rid of this old piano, since it wasn't being used anymore, and took a lot of space. I understood it of course, but it still made me quite sad... I spent so much countless hours in front of this piano during my teenage years...
As a response, I decided to record this video, one day before it was supposed to get picked up by some people... as a goodbye. What more fitting piece to play than this? It was also one of the very first pieces I learned on this piano, and in that music high school.
The people that were supposed to pick it up cancelled the day after.
Then, a FaceBook post was made to give it away for free, but nobody responded to it.
Then, a thrift store chain (De Kringwinkel), which also deals with furniture and second-hand instruments got called to go pick it up to sell it in one of their stores, but when they arrived with their truck, they refused too! (Most people buy piano's just as a decoration, and this one had some clear marks of use...)
We were preparing to completely throw it away then... But in secret, at a moment where my parents and siblings weren't home, I moved around some furniture, and this piano, to make it fit in, perfectly well and clean!
We decided to keep it. (yay!)
One month later, I'm uploading this recording to RU-vid, enjoy!
I'm sorry for some of the awful, awful mistakes I played... I didn't have much time at all to record this (only 15 minutes! This is the second take), and I only rehearsed it twice the day before the recording, so it was done in a rush. And also, sorry for the bird sounds XD, they wouldn't shut up!!!
About the legacy of this piece for fans of the band MALICE MIZER:
This piece even appeared as a background track in MALICE MIZER's DVD "MALICE MIZER sur TV "l'image de merveilles"". (I posted the DVD on my channel btw).
Mana(?) also "copied" (borrowed) the main chord progression of this piece in the background track for the very first scene of the "Verte aile" movie. I cannot tell you which, since I don't know what the titles of these tracks are. Maybe untitled?
Piece title: Prélude in C-sharp minor, Op. 3 No. 2

That was really cool. The tuning combined with the outfit and the condition of the piano gives the performance kind of a spooky feel.

There is nothing else quite like this. The first I had heard this song was from you, and I tried listening to the original. There's a certain allure to your version that doesn't carry with the other videos. I absolutely love this, and I listen to it a lot. It's perfect. Thank you for doing everything you do.
