/ @ajrestoration 1840 Dietz kerosene lanterns have been used on boats at sea, in the covered wagons of pioneers heading west, for railroad signals, and by farmers finding their way to the barn in a snowstorm.
The Dietz Oil Lanterns are made to be used on the homestead. They're resilient even when accidentally knocked around. Due to seamless operation even in lawless winds, Dietz lanterns are known around the world as, "The Old Reliable."
Some history of the company.
At age 22, in 1840, Robert Edwin Dietz bought a small lamp and oil shop in Brooklyn, NY. Robert, with his brother William, called the company Dietz, Brother, and Company.
One of their first products was a candle lantern; they later made sperm whale oil lamps, girandoles, hall lamps, and chandeliers. Three more of the brothers joined the company in 1855, and the name became Dietz and Company. That same year, the brothers built a large factory in New York City, which was later destroyed by fire in 1871. The next year, 1856, they patented a flat wick burner to burn coal oil, a much cheaper fuel.
In 1868, Robert sold his interest in Dietz and Company and partnered with Absalom Smith to form a new company, Dietz & Smith. When Smith purchased 6,000 velocipedes (a mid-19th-century bicycle) on company credit, Robert decided he was a bad business partner, bought Smith’s interest, and continued the company as R.E. Dietz.
In June 1897, a devastating fire destroyed their factory in New York City. To avoid going out of business, the company merged with the Steam Gauge and Lantern Company of Syracuse, and eventually moved the company’s manufacturing center to that city.
In 1906, Dietz began making acetylene gas headlights and taillights for automobiles and trucks. In 1956, company president, Gerry Dietz, established R.E. Dietz LTD in Hong Kong. Two years later, he introduced the Visi-flasher road marker and established the Hazard Division to make and market the product.
The company commemorated its 125th anniversary in 1965 with a celebration at the Hotel Syracuse. That year, the company was one of the largest manufacturers of truck lighting and hazard warning devices. In 1971, they ceased making lanterns in Syracuse, moving all production to Hong Kong. Although sales were strong during the 1970s, they dropped to an all-time low in 1990, the company’s sesquicentennial year.
The company closed its doors in Syracuse in 1992 and the building became the new home of Superior Office Furniture Company.
Today, after “a nearly $20 million renovation of the factory in Syracuse’s Park Avenue neighborhood, the building has been transformed into apartments and offices,”.

Just bought one off ebay! Half the price of a similar Etsy listing 🤯 (the Etsy listing did look better though, it had more of a patina look than straight rust) Definitely gonna be referencing this video when it comes time to clean and repaint it 😊

@@AJRestoration Thanks :D It's actually in fairly good shape (the pictures did it a dis-service) a touch of light sanding with 80 grit sandpaper and some soap and water took care of the majority of the issues, though I may swap out the wick mechanism for a freshly made one eventually But for this winter it will definitely work as is :)

Nice restore! I just done one similar to this, a Japanese made lantern. Bottom was rusted out that oil thing they wick is in was almost gone but I got it out. Then I replaced the bottom and I electrified it. I did a gold and black combo on it.

This one is quite old, but it looks like they do still make them. I recently got the same one but it has some attachment that enables you to use a candle instead of Kerosene. I might do a restoration video on it in a month or 2.

Nice lamp. Was watching the video and noticing how light the metal was, almost like tin. I'm given to wonder something? Have you ever had a restoration that required a delicate hand because the metal was in bad shape and you couldn't locate a replacement? You could repair but not replace.

Great job, I love old paraffin lamps. Was the powder coat heat resistant ? , I know the tops get quite hot 👍
@ekkarzbastlirny5769
@ekkarzbastlirny5769 2 года назад
Exactly, it is absolute nonsense to use powder coating on hot parts if they are protected by plating in the original design. A heat-resistant metal powder-based paint belongs on these places, otherwise the moment the lamp is used the paint will immediately start to blacken up to burning, moreover, I prefer not to talk about the smell.

The lantern isn’t all that old, the rust is only superficial, the zinc still has some shine to it the burner looks like it was buried in dirt because that’s not rust and the wick is brand spanking new and look like it’s ever touched fuel. Also the bottom of the fuel cap is brand spanking new. It would be shiny but not that shiny. I can’t help but think you bought it put it outside for a little and then threw some dirt on it. Great disassembly though and I like the red paint.
@AJRestoration
@AJRestoration Год назад
@@rossparker4374 I would never fake a video. I am not one of those faker restoration videos. I bought this from the scrapyard to add to my collection. It is not that old since the Dietz logo is painted on by factory and not embossed in the glass. These lanterns are sill made today. How you saw it is exactly how I found it at the scrap yard. Something does not have to be full of rust and borderline busted to be restored.
