OLD FARM MANSION 1ST REPAIRS IN 102 YEARS!?!

During the mid 1930's my Great Grandparents bought the house across the street from them. They bought the house on a sheriff sale. My Great Grandparents farmed for a few years, and then they sold their farm ground to each of their 5 children; this is where my Grandfather acquired the property. After living there virtually his entire life, my Grandpa passed away in 2018. I moved in to the house shortly after and started cleaning and repairing.
The siding on the house is original to the 1917 farm home and needed a lot of TLC. Birds, squirrels, and raccoons were starting to get into the attic due to holes in the soffit. Once holes appear, damage occurs very quickly. Dad and I knew we needed to put new siding and soffit on the house so after getting an estimate, we decided to repair the house ourselves!
The videos then go back to the middle of summer when we started on the house. The clips show a step by step of everything we did to the property. We plan on continuing with the other half of the house the summer of 2020. As many of you know, house projects are expensive, time consuming, and ever changing. There will not be a shortage of videos in the coming future as I have hundreds of renovation, cleaning, and repair projects in upcoming videos!
Thank you for watching!

I live in an 1916 2 story farmhouse with a wrap around porch. We live way out in the country. Have been working on the place since we bought it 27 years ago. Still not done. There's always stuff to do. Ours was in pretty rough shape when we bought it. All the other women that looked at it went away screaming! Like my neighbor told me when we first moved here.....it takes a certain type of women to live out here in the country. I must be that type. Since I still love it after 27 years. Even with run ins with wild animals, dealing with our water system...a spring 1/4 th mile from the house, and keeping it running. Living in it unfinished all this time. Etc. Just remember to enjoy what you have finished, not just focusing on what you still have to do. It will get done when it gets done.

@@BWYinYang being a homeowner way out in the country is alot different than being one in town. I have own 1 house that we remodeled in town. And 1 a little way out of the city limits. And now the farmhouse way far out in the country. There are alot more to deal with here. We were on city water and sewer in the city one. On city water and septic in the outside city limits. But nothing like out here. You have to deal with so much more. If you cant deal with unexpected things like you have to out like this. Dont move out like this. I love it, but it's not for everyone. 😁

So glad to see vinyl siding put up correctly. You took the old wood off first. All my 1911 wood is dry rotting because Dad put vinyl over it. I have a brick house so all the overhangs and trim on third floor are dropping pieces if vinyl because the dryrot can't hold the vinyl on anymore.

Hope you and your family are well. Writing this in April 2020 with Covid-19 hitting the US and the whole world. Thank you for saving your grandfathers house. I love all woodworking & the beams in the ceiling. They don't build like that any more. The walls inside maybe plaster, you are going to get an education tearing those out. The furniture is amazing, I don't think your grandfather was a hoarder as much as he did not want to bother anyone to help him and it was not easy, for him, to ask for help. Please do NOT cut down your Pine Tree. Or at least you plant some very fast growing trees to replace them before cutting them down. Right now the big pine tree is keeping your house cooler in the summer, protecting your house from wind, rain and snow. I live in the mountains of North Carolina, my neighbor had this Hugh pine tree and ants decided to build a nest in it. Those allegheny mound ants brought the tree down. Since then the wind really comes blowing thru and lost shade on my tiny house. Without knowing those big pine trees do a great deal protecting you house. I give you so much credit, you are upbeat, hard working young man. Best of luck to you and your family, looking forward to watching more of your videos.

Cole, tell your daddy MY daddy always used to say “if you’re going to be dumb, you better be TUFF!!” I’m referring to him standing on the forks of the forklift and pulling the old siding off. Lol!! It looks AMAZING with the new siding and I love the white trim and the gray siding. Very crisp! When you tear off the front porch, and start planning a new one, think about a wrap-around porch. It would add so much more room for sitting and entertaining and for your kids, if you decide to have any, to play outside, but close to mom’s watchful eye. And I’ve just always loved them! With old rockers and hanging ferns, and big glasses of lemonade! I think it would look awesome! And when you build your new garage/farm office, move it off to the side, so it’s not right in front of the house. And maybe just build a breezeway connecting the two. It would offer protection from rain and snow, but wouldn’t be so expensive to build. Just some suggestions to think about!! You’ve already come a long way. Thank goodness you have such a killer work ethic! Take care! Can’t wait for the next video!

Please, please, please, please, PLEASE, Cole, I'm begging you, when you start on the inside of the house, please keep that woodwork!!!! It is absolutely gorgeous!! They just don't put that type of care and love into homes like they used, like they did in your house!!! The siding looks great!!! I hated to see the porches taken down, I get it, I understand why they were. Your home is amazing. They just don't make them like yours anymore. It's sad really. I was sad when you took out the second floor door too!!! I understand the draft thing, but would love a second floor door and porch. Now, with the front porch coming off to be rebuilt, will you keep the base that the pillars are currently sitting on?? Will you keep the detail on and around that front porch when you build a new one?? As far as the attic space (3rd floor bird house), will you be keeping the detail of each window area?? I surely hope you do!!! The character that is in your home is truly AMAZING!!! The talent the builder of your home had is just not prevalent as it once was. It is very much a dying art form. I'm happy you were able to have your Grandpa's house. It must have some sentimental value for you. I really do hope you are able to keep the character and beauty and so much detail you have in your home as your renovations continue. Thank you again for yet another spectacular video!!! I cannot wait to see everything finished......then onto the next project!!!

Cole The Cornstar why are you awake?? Isn’t it the middle of the night in Iowa? By the way, my Aunt and Uncle have a farm in Iowa too. In Walcott. Do you know it? Their house was built in early 1900’s also.

I don’t know how RU-vid would know I like this, but they did. Great job, a lot of work. You should paint the inside in all light colors, because the wood makes it dark & you don’t want to get rid of the wood. I live in a 100 yo farm house & I redid the inside & loved it! It was the best fun I ever had working.

The vinyl siding will last you for years, Cole. My father owned a wholesale siding company in Des Moines and Davenport. At least the smaller board is more complimentary to the age of the house. It will protect your investment for many years, and that's the point.

Wow...you really don't see very many people working this hard at such a young age these days. Parents did a good job teaching you hard work, etc. Must of grew up doing lots of work with your dad. You are very mature and wise for your age...it's refreshing to see really. Your so knowledgeable and hard working that you'd swear you were 30 or 40/50 yrs old lol..reminds me of my husband...he's a mechanic. Has helped his dad run their shop since he was a kid and is extremely knowledgeable and can work on pretty much anything and is very inventative. He even built a military style chopper motorcycle from a stripped down frame and some scrap parts/metal when he was 17 or 19. There needs to be more young people brought up knowing the meaning of honest hard work....this is so awesome!

It wouldn't be considered new at all. What you say is ignorantly and just a false reality you made up. There is plenty of new housing development that is considered new in Europe. Aparment Complexes, Housing, ETC. 1917 Was a completely different time and society which makes this house old and different then many houses in Europe.

@@attesmatte The US has many homes and building dating back to the early 1800sand before. So you're not special and the US has many buildings like yours in its country.

The US has many housing from the early 1800s as well. So we have houses that we can look back and see what is old or not. and the US still considers 102 year old houses as old because of common sense and how different of a time that ERA was.
