Old Gods of Asgard game out to perform their popular Alan Wake 2 track, Herald of Darkness, at The Game Awards. Are we in the Dark Place? #tga2023 #alanwake2 #gaming
@@FelekJaslo I understand the super wholesome sentiment of your comment, but the wording is so confusing I don't know what you possibly could have edited.
Sam Lake looks so happy. As one of the many big fans of the series, I’m so happy this franchise and game is being recognized on a big stage 😭😭😭😭 congrats to everyone!
I think it's also the fact that the whole performance was originally going to be cut from the game, but managed to get it to be added. So the fact that something that he wanted to have in the game was loved by fans so much, that they wanted to see it performed at the Game Awards is what really made him extremely happy.
@@johnnyghost1243 Wow! I need to read more into it. It was such a fresh idea and honestly one of the best forms of fan service long time fans could get.
Honestly, after all the heartache and tragedy Max Payne has been through in his life, it was so comforting to see him out there dancing with a smile on his face
@@ricardoalberto2150Sure! When the original Max Payne was released back in 2001, the face of the titular hero Max was based on the real-life face of Sam Lake, Remedy's creative director. So, for gamers of a certain age, seeing a joyful Sam Lake in this video feels a bit like a redemptive moment for a fictional character whose story arc went to some dark places.
I remember the moment I finished playing this, I went straight to RU-vid to see it again, and all of the comments were basically “If they don’t do this at the Game Awards, riot”, etc.
If you walk into the police station and go to where the holding cells are, you will find a puddle on the floor which improperly reflects the non-visible skybox outside rather than the proper local room-space reflections.
I honestly thought I'd never see the day they came out with a sequel and the fact that it blew every expectation I had out of the water is something truly special
@@saarishtthaman6951 Doesn't really matter as long as it ends up recouping its costs. I'm sure they'd have liked it to sell more, but it'll continue to sell over time - Remedy is very much not new to having their games become profitable thanks to the sales having a long tail on them rather than selling well right out of the gate. And if the game ends up on Game Pass down the road, that'll also give them a fair chunk of change. The game will definitely end up profitable, a fact I suspect both Epic and Remedy are keenly aware of.
For people who don't know Old Gods of Asgard are an actual Finnish rock band whose real name is Poets Of the Fall. Go check them out, they're simply amazing!
They're simply amazing live; I had a great experience watching them at one of their 20th anniversary gigs. For anyone who wants to hear more of their music as PotF, a couple of their tracks are actually included in the AW and Control games too such as, My Dark Disquiet, War and A Happy Song. 😊
Yall definetly didnt play Hifi Rush. The music there is litterally a integral part of the gameplay and there is litterally not a single bad song in the whole soundtrack.
@@BigMek667 this is only works when game is literally so-so, as FF16, or as BG actors play. OFC Idris Elba play worst than some overreacting BG3 actor. For sure.
@@nero1995 yes, but no. HiFi Rush is awesome game(as a Metal Hellsinger), but the music moment from AW2 is just overwhelm all of this like a BG3 overwhelm other RPGs with choice-result way.
Like just imagine the kinda time Sam Lake is having dancing on stage to a rock ballad from an award winning game he just directed in front of a live audience. Dude's having a blast and he totally earned it!
This performance was incredible but seeing Sam Lake at the end, dancing with them and looking so happy made this whole thing for me, man. It's as if he's in the moment, completely floored, not being able to believe that it's all actually happening, while at the same time loving every second of it. It's a beautiful thing. You can tell he's so proud of that moment in time he's living in and I feel proud for him. What an awesome show!
@@suakeli yeah, regardless of whether he’s playing Sam Lake, the actor who plays Alex Casey for this performance, Sam Lake, the real person who wrote Alan Wake looks like he’s having a blast up there seeing how many people love his work
Yep, exactly. The only reason I tuned in was to see if they performed this. I started watching in the middle of it and was able to catch it after about a 1/2 hour of watching it, so it worked out pretty good.
Sam Lake just made video gaming history, from no Alan Wake sequel due to funding to releasing and winning multiple awards is narrative direction and art in 2023 and his happiness and arc comes full circle, what a passionate guy, now there is an accomplished dude and a role model, couldnt be happier with this years event !
Knowing Remedy, they might run with that. I wouldn’t put it past them to throw something more than an announcement about Final Draft into their performance…
@@SideQuestStories he split into two. There's still an Alan in the Writer's Room. Matthew Porretta was actually Doctor Darling summoned by Alan through paranatural shenanigans 😂
@@LOVEMUFFIN_official that would be fun! Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the new song they released with the album, Sea of Night, was actually in the Final Draft
highlights of this amazing performance: - Yes, it’s semi-playback but the Old Gods of Asgard are selling it good. And they rock. - Matthew Porretta on stage singing. What a voice! - Ilkka Villi mastering the already iconic choreography. 15 years ago he just signed to be a face model and do motion capture in a videogame, and now he’s on the stage of the Game Awards re-enacting one of the most memorable moments in videogame history, and killing it with those moves! - The whole team gathering for the grand finale. - Sam Lake taking the lead and dancing like he’s at the top of the world. You love to see it!
its my moment of the century...i dont know how any gaming studio could top something as weird, cool and awsome as this was. But i would let any studio have a try...could be cool
Honestly I could believe it if it turned out this was Sam Lake's end goal for the past 13 years. "I'm gonna make a video game, and it's gonna have a song in it, and I'm gonna dance on stage at The Game Awards, and it is going to be *awesome* ."
I'm soooo happy for Remedy being the second best winner of the game awards. This company deserves all the praises for the sheer passion they put in every game making them so unique despite being mostly shooters.
@@SideQuestStories And rightfully so. BotW and TotK had amazing concepts with lots of forgettable content. But people can't see past their fanboy blinders to not see that so many aspects of those games were very mid, and half baked.
Personally I didn’t expect Ilkka and Matthew to be there at all ( I don’t know why 😁) but omfg what a great performance from the cast of AW2! And to Poets of the Fall, these guys are incredible, I’m soo happy for them to perform at the stage so big, they definitely deserve all the hype and fame they’re getting and even more!! Kudos to Poets, Sam, Ilkka, Matthew and David and the whole Remedy team!
I 100% didn't think Matthew Porretta would be there along with David Harewood. Thought it would just be a voice over and Dr. Door showing up on the screen.
Getting both Matthew and Ilkka together on stage was really beautiful. They've both said they love working together but can seldom work together directly.
Well, for at least live singing, Matthew would Have to be there. And Ilkka not being part of the act would leave out a major part of the visual of the performance. Basically it would have been not quite worth it for just Poet's of The Falls to perform the portion of the song on their own or with just the backup dancers and Sam Lake doing the dancing.
Whenever I'm feeling down, I put this on and the smile on Sam Lake's face never ceases to make me smile too. I can't wait to see what comes from Remedy next.
The original IRL band is Poets of the Fall, in case anyone didn't know. Two of my favourite songs, Carnival of Rust Lift And from the game Control, Take Control
@@nitish.anand99 One of the most seared into my mind moments of any video game is Control, right after the sequence where Take Control plays, I sat back and said "That was awesome" at *exactly* the same moment Jesse did. That one moment of perfect synchronization with the character left a strong impression.
Who other than Sam Lake both accepts awards and dances in musical rock numbers with his cast on the same night? Congratulations to Sam and Kyle Rowley for winning best game direction and narrative. Congratulations to everyone at Remedy for winning best art direction. Thank you Poets of the Fall, Illka Villi, Mathew Porretta, and David Harewood for the amazing performance.
Seeing Sam Lake so happy almost has me in tears 😭 he pushed SO hard for this musical number to be kept and it was all worth it. Herald of Darkness is ICONIC, The Old Gods are legendary and the wonderful actors/team at Remedy are absolutely amazing!! So pumped to see what they'll do next.
He was the creative director, so I don't think there was anyone necessarily pushing him not to include this level. But he does deserve most of the credit for the vision behind this moment.
@@Granpire he has actually mentioned in a couple of interviews that others were wanting to cut it but he insisted since it's been his lifelong dream to include a musical scene in one of his games. he tried to get one in control too but that one did get cut
There were definitely parts that were live, I think mostly the main singer of the band. I’m not sure if Casper Darling and Mr. Door could pull off a live performance lol.
Gotta say this: Matthew Porretta should have appeared at the end of the video, he learned the choreography just for the event and he dances along at the end - you barely see him dancing here, but you can see that on "people's reaction" videos of this marvelous performance. Regardless, Sam Lake's ocean smile says everything!
I was pretty sure they would be playing Dark Ocean Summoning because that song only required the Old Gods to be there, but I was so surprised and delighted to see Matthew Porretta, Ilkka Villi, David Harewood, and most importantly, Sam Lake up there absolutely killing it. Bravo gents!
@@Zones_Are_Kept It's more they couldn't have a 13 minute song going on during the awards. Performances in shows like this are only 4ish minutes long typically, so the original song is way too long.
Man, that intro from Dark Ocean Summoning would have caused an eargasm in there..but still I’m happy they choose the musical way. It was a special moment particularly for who played that part.
I can't stop watching this it's genuinely so fantastic. My favourite part has to be how happy Sam Lake looks the whole time he's on stage. Absolutely deserves every praise that comes from the game.
Alan Wake 2, Baldur's Gate 3, Larian, Remedy, they deserved all the love. Along with all the other amazing titles. Even if they didn't win, no one can deny their quality and impact. 2023 was a great year for gaming.
@@stanislavilkinovam Nah no way. This year has probably had a larger quantity of amazing single player games then any other year in probably the last 10 years.
@@ForgetfulFoot I agree completely. To me this was best year in gaming since 2010 (which funnily enough was the year original Alan Wake came out) I would say 2023 takes shared 3rd place together with 2008 and 2010 with only 2004 and 2007 as better years in gaming in that order.
@@stanislavilkinovam well perhaps to you, but I think there was lot more than just 2. All of the 6 main nominees in game awards were great games and below them there were games like Diablo IV, Hifi Rush, Dead Space Remake, Pikmin 4, Jedi Survivor, Hogwarts Legacy, Jagged Alliance 3, Company of Heroes 3 etc that were all very good games imho too. Best year in gaming since 2010 if you ask me and by large margin to anything that came between 2010 and 2023.
The way Sam Lake even came in at the end, just fantastic. On top of three awards too before performing this must have just made it feel all the more incredible.
This feels like such an amazing celebration of the game. Sam Lake looks SO. HAPPY. And I love that. Huge fan of thr game (as well as the original + American Nightmare) and it does my heart good to see this. Love this song, love the game, love Sam Lake, love metal, love everything about what I'm seeing.
Well, if the rumors were correct, this whole thing was his baby specifically; loving nurtured and fiercely defended against the cutting room floor, and now it’s getting the love it deserves on the largest stage in gaming. I don’t blame him for smiling.
Alan Wake 2 STOLE the Game Awards IMO!! I was gonna be happy if they won a single award, but they won 3 MAJOR awards and performed this as good as i ever thought they could!
Didn't expect them to pull the whole scene out of the game :D WITH Sam too. So Cool! Fantastic to see Poets out and about, been fangirling for Captain since 1991 :D
Sam Lake put his heart and love to Alan Wake 2 its so amazing , the story telling ,the mini movies inside the game .Its like reading an amazing book . I mean cmon wich game director dances in a musical ? This dude rocks🔥
Sam Lake during the whole award show, from pure joy here to his heartfelt speech upon accepting their 3rd award… he’s up there with Hideo Kojima in terms of Dev Heads!
Remedy's games have always been special, and Sam Lake has been a MASSIVE part of that. Seeing him have an absolute blast showing off and celebrating his latest and possibly biggest success yet is a treat. I'm ridiculously happy for him.
That's exactly how I pictured it: David Harewood, as a host, opens the performance and begins singing along with Matthew Porreta. In the background, Ilkka Villi is dancing with the team, just like in the game, while The Old Gods of Asgard sing behind them. Toward the end of the song, Sam Lake shows up. :) In spite of this, you guys, gave me even more I expected. What an outstanding performance. The best moment about the whole show. I enjoyed this part during the walkthrough and enjoy it now as if I was there and I'm a part of the Remedy team. :) The team really deserves all love. Personal for me AW2 is GOTY.
@@pedroreyes2213nonono, wait, they need to play max payne, all three parts, then alan wake 1, then all the dlcs for alan wake 1, then quantum break, then control, then all control dlcs, AND THEEEEN and only then alan wake 2 😂
I never played the first Alan Wake and didn't care about the 2nd one....then i heard this song at the game awards, and now I'm strangely hooked on Alan Wake
3:14 seeing the og face of Max Payne (yes I know it's Sam Lake) joining in dancing on stage was just so beautiful to witness. Something I thought I would never get to see in my life. But it happened and I'm so glad it did. ❤😂
I never played Alan Wake, so I don't know much about it, but I am SO HAPPY for everyone who made this game!! Not everyone that makes a sequel to a game 13 years later gets the reception Remedy has, and just seeing people love Alan Wake II and the team so happy fills me with warmth.
i know next to nothing about alan wake 2 so this was one of the funniest things to see during the game awards. and you know what? i think it also piqued my interest in actually checking out the game so good job old gods of asgard!
@@MasDoucdo I absolutely need to play Alan Wake 1 to understand 2? Or am I able to jump straight into 2 and still enjoy it without getting crazy confused?
@@kathl.5598 Well maybe just a video explaning the lore of the first game should be enough, but if you have time the first game is also a masterpiece and it hasn't aged badly still very fun to play.
Holy cow, I kept hearing about this musical bit. Having been a remedy fan and finally getting a new console I was like what’s the deal. All I had was a huge grin and wonder on my face. Talk about living the hype, it’s simply majestic!
The Old Gods of Asgard, aka Poets of the Fall, are amazing and this song slaps. I hope this will get them much more well-deserved recognition for all their awesome music.
The fact they got EVERYONE out there to do Herald of Darkness after all the speculation of whether they would do it at all is f**king amazing. And they killed it.😃
Aaand the best game soundtrack goes to... Final Fantasy! "5 minutes later they show THIS" Okay allright whatever Anyway that was absolutely awesome. Glad to see every key figure of Alan Wake just rockin' on the stage Love to Remedy, Ilkka Villi, Sam Lake and Poets of the Fall
@TreeTats I didn't beat 16 bc I got distracted with other games. Every post chapter song in AW2 is fantastic though. This and Superhero are def my faves from the soundtrack for sure
@yellowbat79 I know, I like most of them, and they're much more replayable than FF16 ones. But the 16 ones are also playing during incredible set pieces during which the music elevates those set pieces. In alan wake 2 the only moment that happens is during musical chapter as far as I'm aware since most of the other notable tracks play at chapter end.
This chapter and the fact they've actually performed it live at the game awards is the greatest occurrence in gaming I've ever witnessed and it's made me so happy!!!!!! ❤
I've been gaming since the days when pong was the newest thing, and while picking the greatest scene in gaming is a pretty tough call, I'd be hard pressed to come up with one that tops this. It was truly unexpected and technically brilliant. It's great that there are still developers out there who can come up with something genuinely new in a game, and this definitely fits that description. A little sad they didn't win best music though.
