I’ve seen diesel radial engines were mounted up on tall stands in orange groves in SoCal back in the 50’s. They had large props on them. They were Used to create wind current in an effort to prevent frost damage. I saw and heard them as a kid. Loved the sound. Didn’t know they were diesel until years later.

Some of the WW2 Stuart light tanks had Guiberson diesel engines. Given the drive line and engine mount, I think this was a tank engine. Originally developed for aircraft, they were high precision engines and expensive to produce. The tank crews liked them because of the lower fire hazard from the fuel.

They didn't like being throttled too fast in aircraft applications - same as the German diesels - changes in engine speed too often caused engine wear and failure of bearings.

In Australia after WW2, hundreds of Grant, Lee and Stuart tanks were progressively sold off in war surplus disposal sales. Roughly 50 of the Stuarts sold had Guiberson diesel engines. At least some of these had a version which relied on a cartridge to start rather than an electric inertia type starter.

@ludditeneaderthal
@ludditeneaderthal 3 года назад
4 stroke, undoubtedly. If you look, you'll see the valve pushrod tubes running up the drive side. That fan you see twirling is for cylinder/head cooling air, not forced induction. About the only 2 stroke "aircraft style" diesel I know of (admittedly, no expert) is the junkers jumo series. I've never heard of a 2 stroke radial, no matter what fuel burned, kind of surprising considering how much power advantage such a beast would have with the inherent overlap of power strokes (pretty much constant thrust on the crank throw). It would also negate the requirement for an odd number of cylinders

@@ao2528 Guiberson built T-1020 engines for machinery, boats and tanks. A-1020 diesel radial engines were designed for aircraft, they were tested and certified by the CAA in the 1940's. There were other manufacturers that produced radial diesel engines, including Packard. Diesel aviation engines have been produced by Clerget and Rhone in 1920's. The Jumo 204 was designed in 1930's and the Jumo 205 were used in Junkers 86. Currently there are a range of diesel powered certified aircraft engines, such as on the Diamond DA-40 and DA-50 aircraft. From 114Kw to 368Kw.
