Want a budget bushcraft knife? Enjoy a knife modding project? It is popular to modify an Old Hickory kitchen knife into the blade of your dreams. In this video, I will use hand tools only. Without power tools, you don't risk ruining the heat treat on the blade. Primarily, you need a good file. I also used a sharpening stone, knife, sandpaper, and spare lumber.

Good job using what you had on hand to achieve your desired outcome. So many people let what they don’t have stand in their way rather than trying to make do with what they do have. Well done!

I just bought one and finished the mods a few days ago. I built a sheath for it. It has become my favorite. I have about $25.00 into the whole build. I like putting a mustard patina on the blade in a tiger stripe pattern. If it comes out bad, just sand it off and try it again.

Nice work! I am glad you enjoy it! Nothing like using a knife you put sweat into.

I was amazed you wanted this knife this bad. But I found your video entertaining in it's honesty. I liked the cardboard trick and at least I know mods can be done in this manner. So, thank-you.

Ok, I absolutely loved the video. I am interested in playing at making one of these. My grandfather used old hickory knives, and cut himself so often my uncles nickname for him was Ginsu. Seeing you repeatedly injure yourself, kinda made me laugh nostalgically at my childhood hero for all the times I saw him cut himself. I will be working on a project like this by weeks end, very likely with improvised tools. I will be wearing gloves though. Thanks a lot for the vid.

So glad to see an OH can be shaped with a file. I'm kinda bummed an OH can be shaped with a file, I thought the steel was harder than that. For me the butt vice was the most enlightening.
@theWZZA
@theWZZA 4 года назад
Most knives can be shaped with a file. That has been the case throughout human history. Only recently, with the advent of "super steels," do you need something harder than a file.
@Danielson1818
@Danielson1818 Год назад
It's all about heat treatment, man. A file is usually harder than a knife, because of it's heat treat (also more brittle too). A knife has to be softer, so it can have a little flex (otherwise, your knife would chip or snap easy). So basically, even a cheap file, made out of garbage Chinese steel is hard enough to cut into most knife steel. It's that way on purpose.

GREAT VIDEO!!! believe it or not, i had no idea you are only to go one way with a file.. thanks for posting.. ive been wanting a bush craft knife just like that, and its good to know you can make one without a lot of expensive machinery ..

Very nice. I have about as many tools as you do, and my workbench is a Walmart coffee table. It's enormously satisfying to complete a project like this, and no matter what knife purchase you make, this one will probably still be your favorite because you worked it yourself. One of my favorite things to do is to get Svord Peasant knives with the wood handles and finish them myself to my liking. You get 50% of the work done for you and you finish the last 50% of the work yourself. You can also say for yourself that you crafted your "new" knife using mostly a file and a piece of sandpaper. I'm pretty terrible at sharpening, I recently bought a Worksharp machine (Ken Onion version) which helps me get to a point where I have never been able to be by freehand sharpening alone. Not everyone has time to learn all the nuances of how to perfectly freehand sharpen from a book or a video and become a master Craftsman when you have kids running around and beating each other up. I'm still not a pro using this machine but I'm fairly happy with what I have been able to accomplish. Basically just finishing this tool yourself is satisfying and it looks really nice. To tell you the truth, there is a good possibility that if I had the same first result making feathersticks I probably would have thrown the whole thing in the trash but you had the patience to see it through. Old Hickory stuff is basically respected and world renowned for being what it is, and now you have a pretty bomb-proof bushcraft knife that you can enjoy. Great video, you've got another subscriber. 👍

Thank you for uploading. You've done some nice work there and have inspired me to buy a 2nd Old Hickory butcher knife to modify. I noticed that the first piece of wood you tried to baton and feather stick must have been a hardwood. With as sharp as you have gotten that knife you should not have had that much trouble. Also, what was your reasoning for using a file for the cuts instead of a hack saw?

Say Heah, Yeah, Lemme Wish You a Happy Easter, Christ is Risen,,, He is Truely Risen. I really like these knives made from Old Hickory Knives. Most guys make Kephart Style Spear Tip's, I really like them, Maybe one day I'll buy one already made. But I just brought out my Kephart Style. Yeah, for a new season. It's my vintage Bushcrafter made by Blind Horse. I have a few knives, so I forgot how simple of a knife it is and how good actually it is. I had my handle flattened, so its not the round broomstick handle shape, It actually simplified the knife even more, The corners are rounded and just feel so good in my hand, But the extra control now I have because of the flat handle, I most definitely would do it again if I had to have another one made without any hesitation. There is a beautiful wood like pattern after they polished the micarta scales, Its sort of tapers where the thumb rest when you hold it sideways, and the pommel is just rounded with a finger choil in the handle so your hand doesn't slide into the blade. Boy its so simple of a design, that its beautiful. Yeah, sort of the way some Old Hickory knives end up looking. But at 4" blade and 5/32" thick, its my Lil Tank, I have no fear twisting kindling apart with it, and the Scandi Knife works wood without effort. But as soon as you pick it in your hand, You know you have a quality tool in your hand. It's no longer made by Blind Horse, But I'm sure they still have the blueprint how to make one prolly by both companies that once were Blind Horse. I briefly took it out for a short period of time since I tunned it up from storage, But then I put it away in very good shape, so a lite strop had it in great shape. I just can't get over its simplicity and how good of quality it is, I did have the handle polished, so it does look like a high end Kephart. But years ago, I paid $125.00 for it, I'm sure their more now, But if anything happened to my little jewel, I would want one just like it. Yeah, I'very impressed with it. Yeah, I paid for mine, But I got a great knife for it.,,.

I'm having a small issue getting it to a full scandi. mine seemed to be not as well ground on one side as the other. but I'm getting it. I kept mine at 7 inches. I have a smaller one already. and I got an old machete made of the same steel I can make a back up for if needed. I been doing it by hand with sand paper. haven't cut my self though. and I have done this to at least a dozen blades, most all stainless. so I can't tell you what you did wrong. just be more careful.

I understand the need for a bushcraft blade, but I kinda hate you for destroying that knife. Just go spend $15 on a Mora if you want a bushcraft knife! Good work though.
@theWZZA
@theWZZA Год назад
It's not destroyed... I gave it a new form. The steel is very soft, so yeah, a Mora is a better knife anyway.
@cactusbobaz
@cactusbobaz 8 лет назад
This is a high carbon knife and subject to it's own patina. What I do not understand is why cut this knife up when you can buy one closer to the length you want for bush craft. I believe that this knife is not a butcher knife, it is a carving knife. I think I need to see about investing in a band aid company. Batoning is for larger knives and axes. Please watch more You Tube videos. I am saying these things because I believe you have a lot of heart and ambition. And more than likely you will quit your projects before you are good at them.
@cactusbobaz
@cactusbobaz 8 лет назад
You need to do some batoning then. The blade and handle are not going to take the punishment. Your hands won't either. Take a look at one of my favorite knives. BK9. you might find this a little easier on everything including your pocket book.

Why not do it? Old Hickories have great steel and are affordable to use as blanks- and can be custom modded using two or three everyday tools. To each his own- just know the tool!
