Sweet! I bought a couple old rusty trade knives at a thrift store the other day for $1.50 for the pair. Soaked the rusty blades in vinegar for a half hour and then cleaned with a wire brush. Back in the vinegar for a half hour. My blades aren’t as dark as yours, but they got nice and dark. I sure like the way vinegar darken some metal. I also can’t believe how sharp carbon steel blades get with just a few strokes on a stone and a little stropping! Razor sharp. Your knife turned out nice.

i finally did it! i did everything with every step just like you did in this video. my OH knife now looks exactly like yours! same exact blade pattern, "safety factor" and all. i'm very happy with it. i finally after a long time just decided to do it and it's done!!! i sure like it! now, i'll have to reference your sheath video and make a sheath for it too. took a long time to decide to do it, but it's done! thank you!

Hi again, I took one of my newer knives out into the bush and as we talked around tge fire waiting for coffee to brew and the potatoes to bake I showed my Leuku to a friend he said" that looks like a butcher knife on steriods" and that gave me an idea since he's newly we'd starting a new family and couldn't afford a Leuku right now, I told him that O.K.C. has Old Hickory Knives in 14" lenghts he got one sharpened it up and made a sheath for it and uses it like I do my Leuku, that made me think that the Sami People that came to the new world helped design the Old Hickory Butcher Knife from their Leuku knife, my friend is very happy with the Leuku he made from the Old Hickory Knife at about 1/3 the cost.

The hump on the front spine of a butcher knife is to keep the blade from digging into meat when you're skinning/gutting meat. that way you get a smooth run up the belly or leg.

Great video. I have a couple of Old Hickories for barbecues. I learned that the inexpensive ka-bar leather sheath will work perfectly with the 7 inch Old Hickory. Then you can cook, put it in a sheath and not have to put it down. I like the safety feature of cutting out a choil. I also liked your putting a pattern glued on the knife.

Thanks for the video! At that price for 1095 steel and a handle already installed, this seems like the perfect project knife. If I had a shop I would buy them by the case and make them in each of the designs you drew out, make some basic sheaths, cut in a nice finger choil, add a patina, etc. I bet you could sell them for $25 each all day long.

The buthcer knife has been the tool of real outdoorsmen for three hundred years. When you change teh butcherknife shape, you may as well go buy a knife because you just ruined the one you have. That hump on top of teh blade is there for a reason, and it's what makes an Old Hickory so valuable. I know doing these things is fun, but it has nothing to do with bushcraft. A butcher knife is MADE to butcher animals. If you want a short knife, then buy a short Old Hickory. But the set, and you'll never have to worry about an outdoor knife.
@captainpegs07
@captainpegs07 9 лет назад
James Ritchie So, what's the purpose of the hump? I like to cut down the 14" butcher knives to make nice Kephart-style knives. Old Hick's are wonderful knives to customize to the owner's need.

~3:38 it appears the spine and tip goes (starts turning) straw/yellow/blue, then continues as blade is further heated during grinding (a little water between grinds could help to prevent changing the temper through evaporative cooling). Great project (have done a few O.H. regrinds myself, and they make great tools).

that little, "safety factor" grind-off of the blade edge near the handle .... that's excellent! that's exactly what i'm gonna do, too. my OH knife will look exactly like yours. i'm copying your blade mods exactly to the, "T". yours looks the best and that "safety factor" grind-off is an excellent idea, IMO. what you've taken off from the blade is very little, but i think it's a perfect looking blade with your mods! VG taste in a knife blade you have! that leather sheath you made is awesome, too! i may make one with a belt loop big enough to fit on an army pistol/utility belt because i have a rig that uses that belt with a blackhawk belt pad and usgi "Y" harness suspenders. i use that belt to load-out along with a back pack. most likely i won't carry that OH knife & sheath on that big army belt, but i'm thinking i'll make the belt loop big enough just in-case i want to later. may make the belt loop long where the sheath will hang down like a leather usmc ka-bar sheath on a belt? ... tip of handle end will ride in sheath at the bottom edge of a belt is what i mean (low hung). thx, again!

A seven inch Old Hickory is already a perfect bushcraft knife. If you want something shorter, either buy a shorter Old Hickory, it comes in five sizes, or buy a Mora. As it is, the seven inch version does things no shorter knife can do as well. That "hump" is the main reason to use an Old Hickory. It's what makes it a butcher knife, and it's the shape real frontiersmen and mountain men used.
@MarshRat
@MarshRat 8 лет назад

A young friend just staring out with a family took and turned his 14 Old Hickory Butcher Knife into a sort of Leuku, Yup, it pretty near keeps up with my Stromeng KS-9 Leuku. Also Blackie from Blackoracle69 put his 7" Old Hickory into a after market Ka-Bar U. S. M. C. Leather Sheath, I think he saud he paid $7.00 or $8.00 for it. But he said it fit fine like it was made for it.,,.p

Is that white vinegar patina you put on the blade what's the maintenance to keep it there do you have to soak it every so often again for 6 days
@MarshRat
@MarshRat 9 лет назад
theace750 You only treat the blade once with the white vinegar. After you get it as dark as you like then you wash it real good with soapy water and baking powder to stop the vinegar action. Then put 2-3 coats of clear finish on it to keep the blade from rusting.
