I remember sitting w/my great uncle while prepping seeds he explained that heirloom seeds were so important because they could "learn" from the weather and soil and change as needed to make sure we ate and stayed healthy.

I just did this 2 days ago with my butternut squash. It is oddly satisfying to keep growing crops from seeds you've saved. Teaching my kids about that circle of life by doing this.

Love when you find an "unexpected" surprise. Nice when you think "How should I save this?" instead of just leaving it.

Must be the year, my little pumpkins were absolutely loaded with seeds. Dried them and I use brown paper lunch bags to store my bigger seeds & beans. Saving as much as I can

A great trick I figured out this year when gutting the pumpkin....Ice cream scoop. Works better than spoon and makes quick work of it.

Hello...New Scriber....heard good things about you from 'Homestead Heart' :) *Ironically, recently sold my farm up near Boone, NC on the New River....at times i Really miss the fishing, fresh veggies, picking Ginseng, seeing Eagles daily and feeding 5-15 deer daily...but had to get back closer to home (sometimes it got down to -15f/-35 windchill in Winter. Like i had no cell service, but Amazing Innernet, hah.... sometimes saw more deer in a week, then Humans (I spent 20 yrs in downtown Atlanta, so that can be a good thing). Anyhoo, like you guys...i'm on to buy and renovate another place..... Ohh year....the few FM stations i got on my Stereo were UT and VT games, so i became a fan.....Even though im a Gator Grad ; ) Sidenote: One thing i did Every year was plant 300 Garlic cloves in my garden...always kept the deer away. They couldn't stand it for some reason!! Anyhoo, have a Great and Safe Holiday.

LOL... I love Volunteers.. Even if something happens and we cant garden for a year.. Our garden still provides for us.. My compost gave me tomatoes and ginger this year.. Your sweat shirt says Volunteer on it besides being the same color as the pumpkin.. Have a good day all..

I've been saving like crazy and love the idea of putting them on a cardboard box! After they're dried, I like to put the seeds into a paper lunchbag (especially if there are a lot...like my butternut squash and pumpkin seeds). Thanks for the great ideas!!!

I love that you are combining the cherokee word with the english. Almost like learning another language for us. But you do a great video. We have gardened for many years and I learn something from you everytime I watch one of your video's. Sadly, due to health reasons we haven't been able to garden the last 2 yrs and we miss it. But, you are right on track with what you are doing, keep being a prepper. It pays off some years. Been there and done that.

We saved mostly pepper seeds this year... I then traded tons of seed off for over 130 different varieties of seed this fall, and counting! I love saving seeds; especially when I can trade them off for more. I didn't isolate female squash blooms this year so I didn't save seed from any aside from Desi squash. It may have cross pollinated, so we'll see next year!

Very informative! Thank you! I love Learning the Cherokee words! We have Cherokee blood and some of my cousins are almost full blood (their Dad was full blood and carded Cherokee and My Aunt is what ever in the world we are). They have the full Cherokee look, which I think it is absolutely gorgeous. Sadly the language was never passed down on our side and neither on hers. (If I remember that correctly). Our side was the side that hid in the mountains of Tennessee, we believe, during the trail of tears. It is hard to know because our family would never talk about any history. Hiding something for sure. So amazing you still have it!

I did this with zucchini this year. The only thing missing is sometimes, depending on the squash they can have a papery coating on them. It probably doesn't inhibit germination but I would pull it off before storing. :)

The pumpkin's at the Grocery stores, are not very good I've tried to cook and use them I wasn't impressed with them so I'm going to look for some pumpkin seeds to start to grow for next year's crop.

Patera I would like your advice on something, my wife and I have been watching your channel for a LONGTIME and have been inspired by you and some others to start our own channel back in September of this year. And it’s growing slowly week by week and for that we are grateful, the advice I’m seeking from you is what would you recommend as far as how often to post videos, how long on average (minutes) they should be since we are just starting out and any advice on what we can do to help people find us that don’t know about our channel. I know this is a lot of questions that I’m throwing at you at one time, but this has been a dream of mine for a while and I just wanna do all I can for it to be a success. GOD Bless!! Thank you! This makes me wonder how the Cherokee used to store seeds over the winter. Could you just leave the seeds in the pumpkin and store it in a root cellar till spring for planting? Would they sun dry them and store them in gourds?

Hi Patara! Been watching you for some time now but don’t think I’ve ever written you! Happy Thanksgiving! I just came In to the living room with a big slice of pumpkin pie!! Turned to your channel and saw the latest video! Lol I wish I could say I made this pie but it came from the supermarket but it taste really good too. The only experience I have with making a pumpkin pie was when I was a teenager and unfortunately I didn’t know that there was baking pumpkins and carving pumpkins have you heard of such a thing? Unfortunately my first and only pumpkin pie did not come out too good because the pumpkin I used was too stringy and too watery do you use a baking pumpkin? I was told they are smaller and sweeter and have less water.
